Since it landed on Mars in 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater, a vast, dry ancient lake bed with a mountain at its center. Now, Curiosity has found sediments containing sulfate salt in the crater, which suggest it once held salty lakes.A range of salts have been found on Mars in different locations. Researchers interpret these as evidence of ancient brines. Salty water formations seemed to increase on the Martian surface as the planet transitioned to an arid climate 3.5 billion years ago.The new detection of sulfate salts came from sedimentary rocks dated to between 3.3 and 3.7 billion years ago. Curiosity has analyzed other, older rocks on Mars and didn't detect these salts in them.Researchers believe the salt is evidence of the crater's lake evaporating in the Red Planet's arid environment. They also believe studying younger rocks in the future could shed more light on how the Martian surface dried out.Gale Crater was created by an ancient impact, then filled in with sediment layers over time. Mount Sharp, the mountain at its center, was created by wind erosion of the hardened sediment layers. Those same layers act like chapters in the history of Mars and provide clues to its environment at each point in time.At the time the sulfate salts were present, lakes were probably scattered across the crater floor, fed by streams in the crater walls. Over time, the streams would overflow and then evaporate, trapped in a repetitive cycle taking place over millions of years. The findings were published Monday in the journal 1576

Sleep traits could be a risk factor for breast cancer, new research suggests. Women who said they preferred to get out of bed early were found to have a lower risk of breast cancer than those who stay up late. However, experts cautioned that other breast cancer risk factors such as alcohol consumption and being overweight have a greater impact than sleep and said there was no reason to change your sleep patterns. One out of 100 women who considered themselves morning people developed breast cancer, compared with two in 100 women who described themselves as evening people, according to the study, which was published Wednesday in the BMJ.The study also found that sleeping more than the average seven to eight hours per night was found to have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. It also found there was little link with insomnia.Researchers used information from more than 400,000 women in two large data banks -- around 180,000 women from UK Biobank study and more than 220,000 women from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium study. Participants' preference for waking early or late was included in the data."It is important to note that these data do not suggest in any way that modifying sleep habits could eventually lead to a decrease in the risk of breast cancer," Luca Magnani, senior research fellow in the department of Surgery & Cancer at Imperial College London told the Science Media Centre."What they suggest is that it appears that the risk of breast cancer is associated with a genetic (thus not modifiable) trait that is in itself associated with a "morning" or "night" preference -- what we call 'larks' and 'owls'."According to 2016 figures from the 1700

SEYMOUR — Hidden beneath the trees in a quiet Seymour, Indiana, neighborhood, Jessie Miligan showed where he picked up a baby, just hours old, with no mother in sight."There is a little bag over there. I see a little footprint pop out. I pick it up, I untie it and there is a little blanket covering its face," Miligan said. "So I pull it up and I am holding this little baby in a plastic bag, just back there. I don't know. I try not to judge, but there are way better ways of handling not being able to take care of a baby."It was an unusual sight to find in his neighborhood, or really anywhere."It is something that I never thought I would see in my life," Miligan said. "It is hard to believe that someone would tie a baby up and leave it outside. That baby more than likely would have froze to death. It's cold out."Miligan's mom, Angela Butler, first saw the baby while walking her dog, O.J. In disbelief, she said she went to grab her son and her phone to call 911 to get help for the baby."I told my boys, 'Go with me to make sure I am seeing what I am seeing,'" Butler said. "I had Jesse pick it up and, sure enough, it was a little newborn baby wrapped in a blanket. The blanket was covering its face and tied up, double-knotted, in a Walmart bag."Left alone and crying, Butler said just wrapping the baby in their arms while waiting for emergency crews to come provided some comfort to little one left to be found by a stranger."It was crying before we picked her up," Butler said. "And after we picked her up, she quit crying immediately."For this mother, it was a heartbreaking realization of what she just happened to stumble upon."It's sad knowing that the mother just dumped it off like it was a piece of trash," Butler said. "I don't see how anyone could do that to a child. Like, why would they put it in the woods? Just left it to die?"Seymour police announced Wednesday they identified and made contact with a person they wanted to interview in connection with the case, but there has not been any official update on the investigation. While it was by chance Butler came across the baby, she and her family left knowing they were able to change her future."It made me feel like I saved a life today," Butler said. "That that baby has a fighting chance to grow up and just to have a life." 2320

SAN FRANCISCO — California police officer Robert Davies was arrested after pursing someone police say he believed was a teenage girl on social media.A 20-year-old college student whose name is not public says he used a Snapchat filter to pose as a teen girl and take down a sexual predator. He said he did so because he has a friend who was the victim of a sex crime as a child, and he wanted to help identify possible pedophiles. The student said he was "just looking to get someone" to nab, and it was allegedly Davies who messaged him once the photo of him as a female was downloaded from Snapchat and uploaded to various social media platforms, including Tinder and the messaging app Kik. 703

Summer break is here for many kids across the country. While that means a break from class, for some students it means an end to the free and reduced school lunch they depend on during the school year. However, one Colorado community is making sure its children don’t go hungry this summer. “I feel good. I love it,” says Salina Sanchez. Sanchez operates a retired bus that was turned into a mobile café. Sanchez is part of the team at Aurora Public Schools bringing free lunches to where students are. “Just giving the free meal and at least knowing that they're eating, and that, that's what's good,” Sanchez says. Across the country, 1 in 6 children in America live in households without consistent access to an adequate amount of food. In the Aurora Public Schools district, roughly 70 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. In the past, the school provided lunches at school cafeterias during the summer, but getting to the school was a challenge for many students. Therefore, school officials decided to transform buses going out of service into bright, mobile cafés. “Just create a spot where they could come see us…for free,” says Stacey Bennett with the Aurora Public Schools Nutrition Services. “Not have to go into a building and just be more visible and take the food to them. Now, three mobile cafés serve students lunch during the week at several locations. It’s free to all children, whether they are students in the district or not. “It is a small gesture, but it has a huge impact,” Bennett says. For Sanchez, seeing the reaction from the kids makes it all worth it. “I have like over 600 kids. I can say that they are mine, because I treat them all as if they were mine,” Sanchez says. 1729
