SPRING VALLEY (KGTV): People who live in the East County say they're fed up with the growing homeless problem around Spring Valley County Park.They say it's gotten worse over the last few months, and many parents are now afraid to bring their children there."They yell and scream, and they’re fighting each other," says Gustavo Galvez. His son, Gustavo, Jr. goes to the preschool at the park. "It’s concerning to have your kids listen to that kind of stuff."The county admits the problem has gotten worse. In a statement to 10News, they outlined steps the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Health and Human Services is taking to solve it.Those include:- Coordinating outreach events to give the homeless assistance and resources.- Increasing lighting around the park, especially near the restrooms.- Increased cleaning of common areas around the parkThe county also says that the Sheriff's Department has stepped up their patrols in the area. There is a Sheriff's Substation across the street, which helps keep and eye on the park.Some parents, though, say it's not enough."I feel bad. I know they need to be somewhere. But I don't think they should be where children are," says Lisa Brown, who brings a group of kids from her daycare to the park. "It's a playground. Kids go here."Concerned parents plan to bring their complaints to the Spring Valley Planning Group board meeting Wednesday night. SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 61-year-old man shot a female relative in the leg during an argument Sunday afternoon in Spring Valley.The woman, whose identity was withheld, was struck in the left leg just before 4 p.m. at 1605 Presioca St., said San Diego County sheriff Sgt. Elizabeth Montoya.Danny Goodman was detained by deputies for the shooting and a weapon was recovered at the scene, a sergeant said. The relationship of the two was not immediately explained.The woman was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment. Goodman was also taken to a hospital after complaining of shortness of breath, Montoya said. 621

That could be everything from high blood pressure to heart issues.It's not an easy conversation to have, but the holiday, especially if it's happening over Zoom this year, can make the topic easier to bring up.“When you make it clear that it's really in everybody's best interest that we know what diseases that the aunts and uncles and grandparents and everybody faced is really to everybody's benefit, then maybe it's a little easier to have the conversation,” said Schall.Typically, Thanksgiving is also a time you can check in on family members you haven't see in person for several months.If those in-person visits aren't happening because of COVID-19, the Caregiver Action Network says you want to make sure you're asking questions over a video chat that you'd normally be able to observe in person.That includes things like making sure your family member doesn't have bills pilling up, or there aren't rugs or other hazards in their home that could cause them to fall. 1541

Starbucks has reached gender and race pay equity among all US employees in similar roles, the company said on Wednesday."This milestone is the result of years of work and commitment," said Lucy Helm, executive vice president and chief partner officer at Starbucks, in a statement."We've worked hard for a couple of years now to ensure we can get there," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told CNN's Maggie Lake on Wednesday.The coffee company added that it will now tell American job candidates the pay range for any position in an effort to increase transparency.Helm explained that the company has been striving for pay equity for about decade. Last year, it was at 99.7% parity. Women make up about one-third of the company's executive team.Starbucks uses several tools to make sure bias doesn't impact how much employees make. The company regularly checks for compensation gaps among employees, and uses a calculator to determine starting pay rate targets based on experience. It doesn't ask job candidates about their salary history, and the company analyzes raises to make sure they're fair.It is working with women's organizations like Billie Jean King's Leadership Initiative and the National Partnership for Women & Families to help guide its efforts."One of the most important things to get right is starting pay," said Sara Bowen, the leader of the Starbucks Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility team.Research shows that women, on average, earn around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. The gap is even wider for women of color."If a job candidate comes to Starbucks making 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, and we use that as the basis for her pay at Starbucks, we simply import gender inequality into our own system," she said. "Prior salary can be tainted and should not dictate how we pay."Johnson told Lake that the pay parity achievement is "another example of us taking care of our [employees]."The company also made a commitment to reach gender pay parity at all of its company-owned locations around the world.A number of companies are starting to pay attention to gender wage gaps among their own employees.In a recent survey of human resources executives from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement service firm, 48% of companies say they're reviewing their pay policies with an eye toward closing the compensation gap between male and female employees.Others are making changes already.After disclosing small differences in employee pay earlier this year, Citigroup announced it will give raises to even salaries between men, women and minority employees. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., became the first Black and South Asian-American woman to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.Harris accepted the nomination from Wilmington, Delaware.
