With warmer weather and shorter winters, the ski industry is suffering.“We’re long passed the time when you can drive a Prius and say, ‘I’m doing what I can on climate,’” said Auden Schendler, senior vice president of sustainability with Aspen Skiing Company, one of the oldest ski resorts in the country.Schendler says with the planet warming due to greenhouse gas emissions, America has lost a month of winter since 1940, if you count winter as a day with frost. So, drought and flood patterns are different.”Also, it means a different way of operating for ski resorts.“We used to be able to have more snow more reliably and now it’s more volatile,” said Jim MacInnes, CEO of Crystal Mountain Resort in Michigan.MacInnes has had to adjust to changing climate during his 35 years in the ski industry. Today’s warmer weather causes his team to spend more money and more energy on making snow at times of winter when it used to still fall from the ski.The dry-up has caused his Crystal Mountain to adjust operations and become more of a four-seasons resort.“We do a lot of things in the spring, summer and fall that have helped to mitigate the winter climate change problem,” he said.A former electric engineer, MacInnes is looking for ways to fix this worldwide problem.“Just know that there are a lot of solutions shifting more of our energy use to electricity, clean electricity,” he said.Back in the Rocky Mountains, Schendler supports scientific solutions but believes real changes on the ground level will only come through pressuring high-ranking government officials.“This is a global systems problem, and we need systems solution,” he said. “Which means American government needs to lead.” 2639

at Key West International Airport.Monroe County Sheriff's officials say the woman was a passenger in a private plane on Saturday night.According to Florida Highway Patrol, the woman was outside the plane while the engine was running and the propeller was spinning. While she was removing the plane's chock blocks, the propeller struck the right side of her body.Authorities say she was flown to a Miami hospital. Her condition was not known.The victim was identified as 45-year-old Rebecca Gray of Fort Myers. ZAPATA COUNTY, Texas -- A traditionally Democratic county in Texas voted for a Republican presidential candidate for the first time in nearly 100 years.Helen Trapp was among the voters that helped President Donald Trump win Zapata County this year.When we caught up with Trapp, she stood outside her home and admired the flags hanging from her fa?ade. In the middle was the American flag and on the right was a blue pro-Trump flag.The flag reminds her of some words of wisdom her grandfather would say when she was a child: “Be proud of your Mexican heritage, but your country is first.”Decades later, she heard a similar message from Trump.“His policy was always America first,” Trap said.It was this message that encouraged the Mexican American to switch from voting blue to red. Her vote was one of the thousands that helped turn Zapata County, a traditional Democrat stronghold, into a Trump county.Trump’s election signs are on fences, billboards and houses in the community that borders Mexico, just south of Laredo.“He’s not a politician,” said Trap. “We’re tired of Democrats coming here when they want the vote and forget the town completely.”The county had not voted Republican in a presidential election since 1920. There is not even an established Republican Party in the community.Nearly 95% of residents are Mexican American. Some experts believed Trump’s negative comments of immigrants in the past would have kept Texas communities like Zapata blue but that wasn’t the case. Communities along or near the border like Reeves, Val Verde, Frio, LaSalle, Jim Wells, Kleberg, and Kennedy counties flipped from blue to red in this election.Judge Joe Wrathful believes that the county turned red because residents believed Democrats would not protect the oil and gas industries.“Being from a rural county, good jobs are hard to find. She’s a first-time mom, and we are using behavior training to guide her on how to carry and nurse the baby properly.”Raven was pregnant for about eight months. Raven is the second chimpanzee to give birth at the Zoo recently. In July 2019, the zoo welcomed baby Lola.Experts say developmental milestones for chimpanzees are similar to those for human babies.
