SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the government shutdown approaches its third week, San Diego’s food stamp recipients are preparing for possible changes to their benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, helps feed roughly 40 million Americans. According to the USDA, eligible recipients are guaranteed benefits through January. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to make a statement this week on SNAP funding into February, according to San Diego Hunger Coalition spokesman Joseph Shumate, citing the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).Any SNAP adjustments could also increase the burden on San Diego charities. Many Feeding San Diego beneficiaries also rely on SNAP to help their families, the organization said."For every one meal we do, the SNAP program does 12 meals," said Feeding San Diego CEO, Vince Hall. "That is a 12 to 1 ratio, so any cut to SNAP is going to have dramatic effects on charities already struggling to keep up with the demand, the unmet need for food across our communities."Hall says they are preparing for worst-case scenarios, like the shutdown continuing for weeks or months. According to CBPP, the USDA may rule that the only appropriation available for SNAP after January is the program’s billion “contingency reserve,” which was made available through the fiscal year 2018 appropriations act. But SNAP benefits currently amount to about .8 billion a month, so the billion reserve cannot fully fund February benefits.Other feeding programs, including WIC, which provides food aid and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, new mothers and children, and food distribution programs on Indian reservations, will continue on a local level, but additional federal funding won't be provided. School lunch programs will continue through February. The shutdown started Dec. 21. About 420,000 federal employees are working without pay, while 380,000 are being forced to stay home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As fans of San Diego's craft beer settle into the family life, their love for the industry certainly continues. So naturally, breweries have looked to help those beer-loving parents with setups that are family- and kid-friendly.And many of San Diego's breweries won't prompt the grandparents to judge why there's a baby in a bar, combining outdoor games and play areas with general family-friendly restaurant atmospheres.RELATED: Pet-friendly restaurants, bars in San Diego     Here are some local stops where you and your kids can enjoy a day out:(It goes without saying, drink responsibly. Some breweries offer designated driver discounts. Please check with the brewery to see if they offer any deals. Ride-sharing services are easy to hail at many local breweries as well!)Stone Brewing - Liberty Station2816 Historic Decatur Rd, San DiegoLiberty Station's Stone Brewing spot is great for families who want a day out, but maybe not the entire day at a brewery. Stone's outdoor area is packed with seating and a pond, all right next to Liberty Station's shops, park, art, and food hall. Ballast Point - Miramar9045 Carroll Way, San DiegoBallast Point's flagship location packs a family-friendly restaurant into a brewery, giving options for the entire family on its menu. It also has an area just outside for games and a firepit. Pizza PortMultiple locationsPizza Port locations have all been a favorite among local parents. They combine the appeal of a family-friendly pizza joint, with the craft beer love of a brewery. Kids can chow down on pizza and play arcade games not far from the beach. Second Chance Beer Co.15378 Avenue of Science #222, San DiegoSecond Chance has a set up like your traditional San Diego brewery (inside a business park) but don't let that fool you. The brewery itself has a big area filled with games like corn hole, Jenga, and darts, as comfy couches for board games. Belching Beaver Brewery302 E Broadway, VistaBelching Beaver's setup in Vista is perfect for families (and dogs). Its restaurant and bar lead out to a massive outdoor area complete with picnic seating, fire pits, and games. AleSmith Brewery9990 AleSmith Ct, San DiegoAleSmith's expansion dining area helps out parents with its own children's play area with chalkboards, books, and crayons. The brewery also has its own Tony Gwynn museum, featuring Gwynn's gear, awards, and history. Station Tavern2204 Fern St, San DiegoStation Tavern isn't a brewery in the traditional sense, but offers up many of the craft brews around San Diego that have put our town on the map. Better yet for parents, it has its own kids area complete with toys, chalkboards, and picnic tables. 2788

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials responded Monday to the arrival at San Diego’s U.S.-Mexico border of the first group of migrants from the caravan moving through Mexico. Some 85 people associated with the LGBTQ+ community are near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to journalist Jorge Nieto. While the majority of the migrants remain in Central Mexico, the Tijuana group left the others behind because they felt they were being discriminated against, Nieto said.“As the San Ysidro port of entry is at capacity, we anticipate that those individuals will continue to wait in Mexico until CBP is able to take them in to begin processing them, as we already have a number of individuals waiting to be processed,” a CBP spokesperson said Monday.RELATED: Interactive Map: Migrant caravan journeys to U.S.-Mexico border / Timeline: Migrant caravan travels to border / Photos: Migrant caravan makes its way to border“When our ports of entry reach capacity, when their ability to manage all of their missions — counter-narcotics, national security, facilitation of lawful trade — is challenged by the time and the space to process people that are arriving without documents, from time to time we have to manage the queues and address that processing based on that capacity.”CBP officials said the number of inadmissible individuals it can process varies based upon the complexity of the case, available resources, medical needs, translation requirements, holding and detention space, overall port volume, and ongoing enforcement actions.“No one is being denied the opportunity to make a claim of credible fear or seek asylum,” said the CBP.RELATED: First group of migrants arrives in TijuanaOfficials said the agency allows more people into its facilities for processing once space becomes available. Members of the migrant caravan may need to wait in Mexico as officers process others already in their facilities. The LGBTQ+ group took buses to Tijuana and is currently living at an Airbnb in Playas de Tijuana, funded by U.S. lawyers for the group. It is not clear when the group will attempt to seek asylum in the United States. 2169
