WASHINGTON — During his opening comments at a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the nation's top infectious disease expert — reiterated his confidence that a viable vaccine for COVID-19 would be developed by the end of the calendar year.Fauci says he believes that "it will be when, not if" that there will be millions of doses of a viable vaccine available by the end of 2020.Fauci made those comments Tuesday before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. (KGTV) -- A man who detained two juveniles before taking their skateboards while posing as a sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Monday.  Abraham Joseph Nava, 24, was sentenced to three years of formal probation after pleading guilty in July to felony false imprisonment.In a separate case, Nava also admitted to calling in a false report of a bomb threat. Nava was given credit for 149 days in custody.RELATED: Guilty plea from man who posed as deputy, detained juveniles  He will have to comply with counseling conditions as required by the probation department, including a forensic examination to help determine what course of treatment to take, said Deputy District Attorney Peter Estes.Nava was arrested on June 14, several days after the sheriff’s department was contacted about a suspect claiming to be an undercover deputy.During interviews with several employees in the Main Street area of Vista, investigators learned that the suspect passed out fake business cards and was interacting with juveniles.Investigators also learned that the two juveniles were detained and had their skateboards taken. After identifying Nava as the suspect, investigators obtained a warrant to search his home where they discovered several pieces of San Diego County Sheriff’s Department uniform items, including badges.A box of fraudulent business cards was also found. (CNS) - The Vista Unified School District fully reopened its schools Tuesday morning, becoming one of the first in the region to do so, even as San Diego County appears poised to slip back toward more restrictive COVID-19 tiers as infections surge.The district, which has 29 elementary, middle and high schools, eschewed the more cautious measures some other school districts are taking, moving into its "Phase 3" reopening plan. The plan, "Vista Classic" allows every school in the district to reopen at full capacity. Instead, they were given PVC pipes and plastic liner to create makeshift protection from students returning to in-person learning.Keri Avila, president of the Vista Teachers Association, said on the first day back they’re already seeing issues that need to be addressed to ensure that everyone stays safe.“The problem is it’s not equitable throughout the district. What other classrooms have others don’t have. And we just want the safety for all of our members and students,” Avila said.The reopening of the Vista district comes as the county is expecting to receive bad news about its reopening status with the California Department of Public Health. (KGTV) — A pregnant mother who fell sleep at the wheel early Saturday morning crashed into a Vista building, causing an hours-long gas leak.San Diego Sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on South Santa Fe Ave., near Civic Center Dr., at a Battery World store.A family of five was in the SUV that crashed after the driver, identified as a 30-year-old pregnant mother by deputies, told deputies she fell asleep before she lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone pole, and crashed into the building.A 40-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a 9-month-old girl were in the SUV at the time of the crash. The driver sustained a bruise to her forehead. No one was seriously injured, deputies said. The family was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.The crash caused a gas leak in the damaged building. SDG&E crews have since fixed the leak. The utility company said the leak did not expose the neighborhood to dangerous levels of gas, but nearby residents were able to smell the gas.No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.S.
