A fast-moving lava flow from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano forced yet more residents out of their homes, with an emergency alert calling for immediate evacuations.Hawaii County Civil Defense told residents of sections of the Leilani Estates community to leave their homes. The agency said the latest evacuations were due to activity from fissure 7, one of 24 cracks in the ground that have opened in the island's East Rift Zone since the start of the month. The US Geological Survey said Sunday that fissure 7 was "very active, producing a large spatter rampart over 100 feet tall from fountains reaching 150-200 feet."The USGS warned that magma was still flowing into the rift zone."Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings," it said. 905

A majority of teens think remote learning is worse than in-person learning, however only one-in-five would do full in-person learning this fall if it was up to them, according to a survey released this week by SurveyMonkey and Common Sense Media. The survey asked 890 teenagers, ages 13-to-17, a series of questions about the academic school year and their feelings about the impacts of coronavirus pandemic safety measures that have canceled school-related sports, activities and some classes.About 59 percent of participants said that remote learning was “worse” or “much worse” than in-person instruction. And roughly the same percentage are worried about falling behind academically because of the impacts on learning during the pandemic.About one-in-four participants are worried about unreliable internet connection at home."More than any other issue, teens point to remote learning as their biggest academic challenge this fall," said Jon Cohen, chief research officer at SurveyMonkey, in a statement. "So much of the national conversation on virtual schooling focuses on the burden it places on parents and corresponding losses in workplace productivity, but it's possible that the day-to-day impact on students that will have longer-term implications."But teens appear to understand the seriousness of coronavirus and the reasons behind the changes to their learning situation. About 42 percent would prefer to be fully remote learning this fall, and the majority of them cited the threat of coronavirus as their reason.About 69 percent of survey participants are somewhat or very worried that they or someone they know would get sick because of in-person learning.Participants are also worried about their current relationships and future prospects. More than half, 56 percent, say they are somewhat or very worried they will lose connection with friends.Looking ahead in life, about half of teens in the study said they were worried about losing scholarship opportunities and future job or college aspirations because of the pandemic.Survey responses were gathered in the last week of August. About a third of survey participants reported they were going to attend school fully remote learning, and only seven percent were planning on full in-person learning. 2277

A former congresswoman says her old congressional Twitter account was hacked by former staffers on Tuesday night, hours after it was announced that her memoirs would be adapted for TV.Katie Hill served in Congress as the representative for California's 25th district in 2019. The Democrat defeated a Republican incumbent in the 2018 midterms, becoming the first openly bisexual woman to be elected to Congress. However, just months into her term, reports surfaced that she was having an affair with one of her staffers. The disclosure of the relationship sparked an investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Hill resigned from Congress in November.Amid the reports of her relationship with her staffer, nude photographs of Hill leaked online. Hill has alleged that the release of the photos was politically motivated and that her ex-husband was responsible for leaking them. Hill also claims that her ex-husband was abusive to her throughout their relationship. In August, Hill released her memoirs, "She Will Rise: Becoming a Warrior in the Battle for True Equality." The book describes her experience of navigating the Washington Beltway and Capitol as a young woman with little prior experience in politics. On Tuesday, it was announced that actress Elisabeth Moss ("The Handmaid's Tale," "Mad Men") would portray Hill in a TV adaptation of her book. Hours after that announcement, Hill's congressional Twitter account — which has been quiet since her regulation — tweeted a long thread condemning the TV adaptation."Katie's former staff here. Disappointed in so many folks - including Elizabeth Moss, @Blumhouse (Blumhouse Productions), & @michaelseitzman (producer Michael Seitzman) - regarding today's announcement," the thread started. "This is an incredibly sensitive situation. We appreciate the instinct to defend our former boss, an LGBTQ+ woman who faced abuse from her husband.""What happened to Katie Hill shouldn't happen to anyone. But, this moment requires more nuance, as Katie Hill's story - our story - is also one of workplace abuse and harassment," the thread continued. The thread went on to described Hill's inappropriate relationship with her staffer. 2187

A man allegedly cut through a fence to escape a coronavirus isolation facility Friday in New Zealand. Officials say the man, only described as being in his 50s, apparently went to a liquor store before returning on his own to the facility. The man is now in police custody and is expected to appear in court, according to a statement from New Zealand Air Commodore Darryn Webb, Head of Managed Isolation and Quarantine. He said investigators believe the man cut through fence ties to break out of the facility around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, then returned about 30 minutes later. Authorities are checking CCTV footage to confirm the man’s movements during that time. It happened in the town of Hamilton, on the North Island of New Zealand. It appears the man visited a liquor store. Police have talked to the store, and no one entered it this morning until health officials confirmed it was safe to do so.“Managed isolation is a critical part in our defence against COVID-19, and it is up to each and every person entering this country to play their part and abide by the law,” Webb said. The man who escaped arrived from Sydney on July 1, and their first coronavirus test came back negative, according to Webb. However, he still must remain in isolation. Webb believes the health risk from this incident is very low.“We take any breach of the COVID-19 rules very seriously. Wilfully leaving our facilities will not be tolerated, and the appropriate action will be taken,” Webb said. This comes just two days after another man escaped from a separate isolation facility in Auckland. This man, age 32, has tested positive for coronavirus. He was reportedly outside smoking a cigarette when he left the facility and visited a supermarket before returning. After that incident, Webb said fencing at all isolation facilities will be replaced with 6-foot-high fences.Travelers are being asked to isolate for at least 14 days in New Zealand, some must go to isolation facilities. 1976
