LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Charges have been issued against a La Mesa store owner arrested over an altercation with the media. According to the City of La Mesa, charges against Peter Carzis, 76, include one count of felony vandalism and three counts of misdemeanor battery.An additional misdemeanor charge of committing a lewd act in public was also issued for an incident that occurred on January 18. Monday, news crews gathered outside Peter’s Men’s Apparel, a clothing store owned by Carzis, to speak with him about reports of lewd acts occurring outside the store over the weekend. As cameras rolled, Carzis was seen cursing before attacking a news photographer and slapping the phone out of a reporter’s hand. Police said Carzis caused “irreparable damage to a video camera reported to be worth approximately ,000.”According to police, Carzis "is also the suspect in two other reported crimes, a misdemeanor battery and a misdemeanor lewd act in public" that occurred on Jan. 18 in front of his store. LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas leader wants the city's airport renamed amid a wave of racial unrest and calls for removing brands, tributes and other items with racially-charged origins.McCarran International Airport, located next to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is arguably one of the most prominent places in Southern Nevada.In 1948 it was named for Sen. Patrick McCarran, a powerhouse in both state and national politics.McCarran represented Nevada from 1933 until his death in 1954 in Washington, D.C.During his time in public office, he was considered one of the biggest supporters of aviation, which was still getting off the ground in the 1930s, and sponsored key legislation that helped shape the modern air travel industry.However, historians have pointed out that McCarran's legacy is marred by racism, xenophobia and antisemitism."Pat McCarran was an evil man," Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said.Segerblom wants to scrub McCarran's name from the airport and introduced a bill in the Nevada Legislature in 2017 to do just that."To have the first thing when you come to Nevada (be) McCarran Airport — when you look at his history, that's just unacceptable," Segerblom said.Segerblom wanted to rename the airport for longtime Nevada Sen. Harry Reid (D), but the bill ultimately failed."First off, I want to get rid of the name, but secondly, I want to honor Sen. Reid, he is really the father of modern Nevada," Segerblom said.There was push back, and Segerblom says he believes opponents felt using Reid's name as a replacement was too politically partisan."Our kids grow up hearing about McCarran airport; they don't know what that its, but they don't realize we are honoring somebody who didn't believe I should even be a citizen or have the right to vote, that's wrong," Segerblom said.Critics who are opposed to renaming the airport say McCarran was a critical part of history, and attempting to scrub his name from Las Vegas will not change that. LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas couple is trying an unusual solution for rising rental costs — living out of their van by choice, and saving more than ,000 per month.The lifestyle is called "Van Life" and it is exactly what it sounds like.Lawrence and Liz Heller say the van life comes rent free and without utility bills but, instead, their major monthly expenses include their car payment, insurance and gasoline.The Hellers and their three dogs squeezed into the couple's 2011 Volkswagen Routan after Lawrence lost his job following an injury in August.The Hellers say the unfortunate situation left them with a difficult decision — use Liz's entire disability income on rent which would leave them nothing left over, or come up with a different plan.Las Vegas and Clark County routinely rank among the highest of per capita homeless in the country.Liz says the couple had been considering the purchase of an RV but the initial down payment was more than they could afford.Liz says moving to another apartment was not feasible due to rising rent costs which are now more than 0?on average per month in the Las Vegas valley.The Hellers began researching and found a variety of websites, discussion boards and YouTube videos that provide a wealth of information on the topic."After everything that had gone on, we opted for the van life," said Lawrence.The Hellers say the transition was rough at first."It looks like a typical so-called soccer mom van but in reality, behind those tinted windows, people are living," said Lawrence.The couple says they had to dramatically downsize which included giving away some family heirlooms.They are renting a storage unit, a mailbox that provides a physical address and re-homed their cats."We do not have an electric bill, we do not have rent," Liz said. "All we have is our car payment, car insurance, storage and our mailbox."The Hellers say the van life certainly comes with its disadvantage: public restrooms, truck stops for showers and not being able to cook.The couple says when it comes to surviving the elements, they keep their van running to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.Liz and Lawrence say the "Van Life" is not permanent for them and some day they would like to save up enough money for an RV of their own.In the meantime, they say they do not qualify for many government programs or additional assistance because they do not have children.The Hellers say many programs, such as Section 8 housing vouchers, have long wait lists or are simply out of money."When people define the word homeless, people say 'well, you don't have a home to go to,' " said Lawrence. LEMON GROVE (KGTV) - Fire crews snuffed out a brush fire near Imperial Avenue and San Altos Place in Lemon Grove Sunday evening. Heartland Fire said the blaze started shortly after 5 p.m. when a palm tree caught fire near trolley tracks. Trolley service was disrupted near the Massachusetts Avenue station and busses were used to transport passengers.The fire threatened about 20 homes, and no one was evacuated. Some power lines were damaged, along with railroad ties to the trolley. The fire also damaged a residential fence and the eaves of a few homes.Nobody was injured in the fire, which was contained in about 40 minutes by several fire crews, including a water-dropping helicopter.The San Diego Sheriff's Bomb and Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire. 815

(KGTV) -- A student shown in a video being thrown to the ground by a school resource officer at Helix High School during a disciplinary matter spoke out for the first time Tuesday.A video recorded by students show 17-year-old Brianna Bell being thrown to the ground while in handcuffs at the school.The incident was sparked after the officer was called to assist with the suspended student reportedly refusing to leave campus.VIDEO: Officer tackles handcuffed 17-year-old student to ground at Helix HS"The student became non-compliant on two separate occasions and made an attempt to free herself by pulling away from the officer," La Mesa Police Department officials wrote in a statement.
