SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres allowed an unearned run in the first inning of a 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Monday evening in their first exhibition game at Petco Park in 2020.Like most sporting events around the world, fans were barred from attending under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.Angels reliever Keynan Middleton took a knee and clenched his right fist above his head during the playing of the national anthem.David Fletcher scored the lone run from second base when pitcher Garrett Richards fielded a ground ball by Tommy La Stella and threw to second base in an attempt to start a double play and the ball went into center field.Fletcher singled on a 1-2 slider leading off the inning and moved to second on Mike Trout's walk. The Padres were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and did not have a runner reach third base. The Padres were outhit, 7-6. Edward Olivares, the No. 9 hitter in their lineup, had the Padres only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the third, but was unable to advance as Fernando Tatis flew out and Trent Grisham grounded out.The Padres also had runners reach second in the sixth and seventh innings.Tatis singled leading off the sixth. Pinch-runner Jake Croneworth moved to second on Grisham's ground out, but Manny Machado and Tommy Pham struck out to end the inning.Eric Hosmer singled leading off the seventh. Pinch-runner Josh Naylor went to second one out later on Hansel Robles' wild pitch.Jurickson Profar walked to give the Padres runners on first and second but Austin Hedges and Olivares struck out to end the inning.Richards (0-1) allowed five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking one in his third appearance in an exhibition game in 2020.Richards was limited to three September games in 2019 -- his first season with the Padres after spending the first eight seasons of his major league career with the Angels -- as he recovered from Tommy John surgery performed in 2018 to repair a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.Angels starter Griffin Canning (1-0) allowed three hits in six innings, striking out five and walking two.Ty Buttrey, the Angels fourth pitcher, allowed a single to the second batter he faced in the ninth, pinch-hitter Webster Rivas, but got Greg Garcia to fly out and pinch-hitter Owen Miller to ground out for his first save in exhibition play in 2020.The Padres will play one more exhibition game -- Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, then begin the regular season Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park. 2587

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California State University Board of Trustees announced the appointment Wednesday of Ellen Neufeldt as president of the San Marcos campus.Neufeldt will become the university's fourth president when she takes over in July. She is currently the vice president of student engagement and enrollment services at Old Dominion University in Virginia.CSU officials had searched for and interviewed candidates for the Cal State San Marcos presidency since November."Dr. Neufeldt has been a visionary leader who has demonstrated a commitment to student success throughout her career," said CSU Trustee and search committee chair Jean Picker Firstenberg. "She brings a wealth of experience, and will serve as an inspirational leader on the campus and in the community."Current CSUSM President Karen Haynes announced last September that she plans to retire in June. Haynes, will leave office as the longest-tenured president in the university's history, helped increase the school's population from 7,000 in 2004 to the current 17,000 and added 15 new buildings and more than 100 academic programs.Neufeldt has held her current role at Old Dominion since 2011, overseeing government relations and marketing and public relations in addition to student engagement and enrollment services. Prior to joining Old Dominion, she also served as the vice president of student affairs at Salisbury University and assistant vice chancellor for student development at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.Neufeldt said she was looking forward to her new post."There has been remarkable growth both on the campus and in the local community and the opportunity for additional growth still remains," Neufeldt said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Horses of Tir Na Nog equine sanctuary east of Alpine is inviting members of the public to join its monthly giving campaign and become a "Hay Hero."Donations support sanctuary operating expenses, including feed costs that exceed ,000 per year. The volunteer-driven nonprofit partners with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to care for horses rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment."By making a monthly pledge, our Hay Heroes are helping us meet our most basic commitment to provide our horses with a high-quality diet," Administrator Amy Pat Rigney said. "Hay Heroes can choose the amount of their monthly commitment. When feeding 58 equines, no gift is too small. Everything helps." The sanctuary is a nonriding facility, though the community is invited to meet some of the horses under care. The 15-year-old facility is named after an Irish legend about an old horse that becomes young again. 951

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 381 new COVID-19 cases and three new fatalities, raising the region's total to 56,750 cases and 891 deaths.Of the 12,879 tests reported Saturday, 3% returned positive with 239 people hospitalized. No new community outbreaks were reported.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days. The county avoided the state's purple tier, the most restrictive, for yet another week on Tuesday, remaining in the less restrictive "red" tier of the state's four- tiered coronavirus monitoring system. The county's adjusted case rate dropped to 6.5 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population.According to the California Department of Public Health, the county's unadjusted case rate is 7.4 per 100,000 -- enough to be in the purple tier, which has a floor of 7 per 100,000. However, the high volume of tests the county is able to perform daily allows for an adjustment from the state. This adjustment has kept the county in the red tier for several weeks, saving it from having to shut down nearly all nonessential indoor businesses. The state data, updated every Tuesday, reflects the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand in the state's four-tiered reopening system.San Diego County did show modest improvement, dropping 0.4 from last week's unadjusted case rate of 7.8. The testing positivity rate continued an upward trend, rising 0.2% from last week to reach 3.5%, but remains low enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. If a county reports statistics meeting metrics in a higher tier for two consecutive weeks, it will move into that more restrictive tier for a minimum of three weeks. The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, dropped from 5.5% to 5.1% and entered the orange tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance. All students at San Diego State University remain under a stay-at-home advisory. The advisory began at 6 p.m. Friday and will run through Monday at 6 a.m. University officials said the move was made to discourage students from participating in Halloween events in which physical distancing cannot be done. Students are advised to stay home unless they have an essential need. The Escondido Union School District reported two positive cases Thursday at Mission Middle School.District officials were notified of the positive tests on Tuesday, and said the cases were separate. The new cases prompted district officials to advise 25 students, five teachers and three classroom aides to begin a 14-day quarantine. The Vista Unified School District reported four COVID-19 cases Monday, including two Mission Vista High School students, one Roosevelt Middle School student and one Alamosa Park Elementary School student. On Tuesday, the district confirmed two additional cases -- one at Mission Meadows Elementary School and one at Alamosa Park Elementary School.According to the district's COVID-19 safety dashboard, it has recorded 13 cases since Sept. 8, with nine of those coming after Oct. 20.The VUSD Board voted Tuesday to shut down at least one campus for two weeks starting Thursday as a result of the rising cases. At least 400 students and nearly two dozen staff members have been ordered to quarantine.Mission Vista High School moved to distance learning for at least two weeks starting Thursday, while Alta Vista High School and Roosevelt Middle School also face potential closures. 3642

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Temperatures throughout San Diego County will warm slightly each day leading up to the arrival of a heat wave for Labor Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The agency issued an excessive heat watch that will be in effect from Friday morning through Monday evening in the western valleys, the mountains and the deserts. An excessive heat watch will also be in effect from Saturday morning through Monday evening in coastal areas.High pressure will strengthen over California throughout the week and begin ushering in the sweltering conditions on Friday, forecasters said. Monsoonal moisture is not expected to accompany the weekend heat, meaning it will not feel as muggy as recent heat waves.Temperatures in the deserts could reach 119 on Sunday and 118 on Monday, while highs in the western valleys are expected to top out at 109 on Saturday, forecasters said.High temperatures Wednesday are forecast to reach 76 degrees near the coast, 80 inland, 83 in the western valleys, 90 near the foothills, 94 in the mountains and 109 in the deserts. 1087
