BOAO, Hainan, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The economic and trade exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was facing a historical opportunity and needed joint efforts from both sides for further progress, Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said on Saturday.     Hu made the remarks while meeting with Vincent C. Siew, chairman of the Taiwan-based Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation at the Boao Forum for Asia. Facts proved that the economic exchanges and cooperation was the most vigorous factor in the cross-Straits relations and an effective way to benefit people on both sides and expand their common interests.     Hu pointed out that in recent eight years, the cross-Straits relations "suffered twists and turns for reasons known to all", and people on both sides were not willing to see that.     He stressed that the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relations was the shared will and common interests of compatriots on both sides.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China senior political advisors gathered here Wednesday, to learn about the country's economic situation and developments in the earthquake relief and reconstruction campaign.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presided over the inaugural session of the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.     Jia praised CPPCC members for their participation in the earthquake relief campaign.     The relief situation remained serious and the tasks were still very heavy, Jia said. The CPPCC was responsible and duty-bound to contribute to the relief and reconstruction work. WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and U.S. President George W. Bush met at the White House on Tuesday, agreeing to push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.     During the meeting, Yang hailed the great development that two countries have achieved in the past seven years in enhancing China-U.S. relations, which he said also contributed to the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.     He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush have set the direction for the future development of bilateral relations during their meeting held at the sidelines of the Hokkaido G8 summit in Japan earlier this month.     China is willing to work with the United States to follow the direction and push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries, Yang added.     For his part, Bush told the visiting Chinese top diplomat that he is glad to see China-U.S. relations developing on a favorable momentum that the United States is committing to maintaining, and he also appreciates a good working relationship built with Chinese President Hu Jintao.     On the coming Olympic games in Beijing, Yang expressed his welcome to Bush, who is set to attend the opening ceremony, and wished American athletes excellent performance in the competitions.     Bush said, in return, that he looks forward to visiting China to attend the Olympic games' opening ceremony.     On the issues of human rights and religion, Yang told the U.S. president that China would like to continue to exchange its views with the United States on basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs, as a way to promote mutual understanding.     He also noted at the meeting that the WTO's Doha Round trade negotiations are at a critical moment, and its success would help promote world economy growth, which is in the common interest of China, the United States and the international community.     China hopes that all sides can work together to push forward with the negotiations and achieve a comprehensive and balanced result, he added.     Yang also met with Stephen Hadley, assistant to the president for national security affairs.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday.     The Xinzhou-600, developed by Xi'an Aircraft Industry Company (XAC) of the China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I), flew on Thursday in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, said the AVIC I.     The turboprop aircraft was a new version of the Xinzhou-60 that can carry 50 to 60 passengers. The Xinzhou-600 had been updated with a more comfortable cabin and better designed body structure and maintenance system, said Geng Ruguang from the AVIC. A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday    It was also designed for inter-island flights, which would helpit in the Southeast Asia and island nation markets, Geng said.     XAC took about three years to develop the Xinzhou-600, which would be delivered to clients from the second half of 2009, he said.     The company has orders for 136 Xinzhou-60s and has exported them to Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Laos, Zimbabwe and Bolivia since 2006.     This would give China the edge to compete in the global market for turboprop aircraft, where demand is expected to reach 1,900 in20 years.     Geng said the company had started to plan the development of the next generation aircraft, the Xinzhou-700.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. China is the third country in the world to accomplish the feat after the United States and Russia. "How did you feel like in space?", President Hu asks spacewalker    Chinese President Hu Jintao asked Chinese taikonauts what it was like walking in space in a conversation with them after the trio successfully realized the country's first-ever space walk on Saturday.     "How did you feel like in space after exiting the module?" asked smiling Hu, who was talking on a phone that connected him at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) with astronauts on the spacecraft Shenzhou-7.     "I felt superb," answered Zhai Zhigang, who carried out about 25 minutes of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) about 343 km above the earth after floating out of the Shenzhou-7 cabin on Saturday afternoon.     "The process of taking on the Feitian spacesuit went smooth," said Zhai, looking confident and radiant on the screen at the BACC. "In the vast space, I felt proud of our motherland."      Hu congratulated the astronauts on the successful feat and encouraged them to carry on efforts to fulfill the mission.     "The thing I most want to know is how are you feeling now and how is your work going," Hu asked the trio.     "We feel well," said Zhai. "We conducted the space scientific tests as planned and the EVA went smoothly."     Hu hailed the spacewalk as a sign of the country's progress in space scientific technology.     "You have made outstanding contribution to our country's space project," said Hu. "The country and the Chinese people are grateful to you."     At 4:43 p.m. (0843 GMT) on Saturday, Zhai slipped out of the orbital module of Shenzhou-7 in a head-out-first position, wearing a 4-million-U.S.dollar homemade Feitian space suit.     China's first-ever spacewalk marked a remarkable progress in the country's ambitious space program, which will eventually lead to the establishment of a permanent space station.
