SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing were gearing up to accommodate more than 160 additional homeless residents needing shelter Tuesday night due to forecasted rain, according to the San Diego Housing Commission. The commission activates its Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees and the chance of rain is higher than 40%, the temperature falls below 45 degrees regardless of the chance of rain or sustained high winds are predicted. The program is funded through a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A train struck and killed a pedestrian in Old Town Thursday, authorities reported.The rail fatality in the 4000 block of Taylor Street occurred about 11:30 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.Details on the circumstances of the death, including the victim's age and gender, were not immediately available.Due to the fatality, Coaster passenger-train service was delayed until further notice, North County Transit District advised. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was killed Saturday when an SUV overturned and crashed into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said.The accident happened about 9 a.m. when a white Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed according to one witness, overturned and hit a tree on the right shoulder of the Sea World Drive on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Salvador Castro.Units from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were also on the scene, near the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center.The CHP had no immediate information on the identity of the victim. Castro said nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the crash.Traffic on Sea World Drive and northbound I-5 was reported to be slowing. The CHP will investigate the cause of the accident. 837
