PORTLAND, Ore. — A peaceful protest morphed into an intense early morning confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement in Oregon's largest city.U.S. agents fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls early Monday to clear a mass of protesters outside the federal courthouse in Portland. Some protesters had climbed over the fence surrounding the courthouse. Others shot fireworks, banged on the fence and projected lights on the building. The city has seen nightly protests for about 60 straight days since the death of George Floyd. The Monday morning scene in Portland has become the norm in the city in recent days. Authorities declared a riot in the are of the courthouse on early Sunday morning as some protests breached a gate surrounding the building. The Associated Press reported that six people were arrested.Later on Sunday, Portland police say a person was shot at a park near where the protests take place. Two people were taken into custody in connection with the incident but later released. The person who was shot was later treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Portland police also reported Sunday that a bag was found at the same park that contained loaded rifle magazines and Molotov cocktails. It's unclear if the items were related to the protests, and police say the items are not connected with Sunday's shootings.Though protests have continued for weeks in Portland, they've escalated in the past week since the arrival of federal agents. The agents were sent to Portland as part of a directive from President Donald Trump and Acting Sec. of Homeland Security Chad Wolf to prevent the defacement of monuments, statues and federal property. However, both Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler have said they do not welcome the presence of the agents and have asked the Trump administration to order their removal. Both Brown and Wheeler have said the presence of federal agents have heightened tensions and escalated violence. 2027

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A couple believes they got bed bugs from shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center.Matthew Nystrom said he noticed bed bugs in his bedroom Sunday. Just one day after his wife bought new jeans for him at one of the mall's department stores. He said he didn’t know where the bugs came from at first, but he said they noticed the bugs the same day he decided to wear his new jeans. Then he found a bed bug gnawing at his leg.“Pulling it out of my leg was like…I better not tell my wife or she’s gonna freak out,” Nystrom said. Then he decided to tell his wife Hillary Nystrom. She said she read comments from other people on social media complaining about bed bugs at the mall. That's when she decided to check the other pair of brand new pants that they hadn’t taken out of the bag yet.“I pulled the one pair that were in there out and I just unfolded it. And there was one sitting right there,” she said, referring to a bed bug.She said she saw it in the shopping bag after they had the house exterminated by Ace Pest Management. Pest specialist Randy Wells shared a few tips on how to get rid of them as soon as possible.“Pretty much anything that you can throw in a dryer that you think has bed bugs or the like, just put it in at high heat on a cycle and that’ll kill the bedbugs. And again call a pest professional for a thorough inspection,” he said.Wells added people can also rid their homes of the bugs by avoiding taking affected items or even moving from room to room.Several other customers have complained on Facebook about finding bed bugs in clothing after shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center, too. One said a friend was bitten on her foot after wearing new shoes from a shoe store. Nystrom said she wants the mall to do something about it.'They need to close the doors and get that figured out before any more people get it," said Nystrom. The couple said they will not shop at Port Charlotte Town Center anymore. The mall’s General Manager Barbara Roche said she’s aware of the complaints, but declined to comment. 2101

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Poway is seeking the public's input on how to best preserve the history of the landmark known as the Big Stone Lodge, although the City Council appears to be moving toward demolishing the building. "There's been a lot of talk about just tearing it down and keeping a pile of rocks," said former Poway Mayor Mary Shepardson, who has been helping lead the effort to turn the site into a park. "That would be like tearing Stonehenge down and keeping a pile of rocks. It's not the same thing."Shepardson's family has been in Poway for 70 years and used to eat regularly at the lodge's restaurant. She says the area is an important local landmark, first built in 1923 along the stagecoach route into San Diego. The city bought the property once the business closed and it has fallen into disrepair over the last 20 years. Squatters regularly break in and use the building for illicit activities, according to city officials, creating a health and safety danger. "The property has really been deteriorating and has become a nuisance," said Director of Development Services Bob Manis. The City Council is expected to vote in the next few months on whether to demolish the structures. But while the site has been designated for future affordable housing, the council has no timeline for deciding what to ultimately do with the property. In the meantime, they have directed city staff to identify parts of the Big Stone Lodge building and surrounding property that could be preserved and possibly integrated into future plans.Manis points to the namesake big stones, which can be seen from the exterior in the building's two chimneys, as well as the numerous old trees surrounding the property, as elements that could be saved and worked into whatever comes next.Shepardson is one of hundreds of people who supports turning the Big Stone Lodge into a passive park. A petition to do that was created on Change.org by Jessica Johnson, the founder of the popular website "Hidden San Diego." Johnson points to the value of the area for hiking and says any development of the property would be harmful. "I feel that over the years the city has stopped being respectful to San Diego's heritage and we're just slowly destroying everything of historical value," Johnson said.A public workshop will be held Thursday night at the council chambers to share preservation ideas. 2398

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — Poway will host two simultaneous Fourth of July fireworks shows this summer in order to encourage social distancing while continuing the tradition.Fireworks will launch from both Poway High School and Sportsplex in South Poway Business Park at 9 p.m. on July 4, the city says."Keeping these celebrations going is more important than ever," said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. "They will bring people together in spirit and shine a little bit of light into the darkness we've experienced due to the pandemic, all while we celebrate our nation's founding."The two locations will allow for a nearly 360-degree view of fireworks from the Sportsplex while allowing those who traditionally view the show near the high school to continue doing so.However, there won't be any viewing allowed at Poway High School's football field due to public health orders. Instead, anyone who wants to view the show can purchase a parking pass to watch from across the street at Lake Poway. City officials say a map of the best viewing locations and more information will be posted online here soon.Anyone who heads out to view the shows is reminded to observe social distancing from groups that are not from the same household and wear facial coverings around non-household members. 1285

President Donald Trump on Tuesday again seized on what he called a "terrorist attack" in London to call for tougher anti-terror measures, even though the incident was still in the early stages of investigation."Another terrorist attack in London...These animals are crazy and must be dealt with through toughness and strength!," the US President tweeted.Metropolitan Police in London were investigating the event -- in which a car crashed into security barriers outside of the Houses of Parliament during rush hour Tuesday morning -- as a terrorist incident. The driver, a man in his late 20's, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of terrorist offenses. He was alone in the car and no weapons were recovered at the scene. 732
