EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A renowned El Cajon artist who captured a moment in American history is helping it live on today. Olaf Wieghorst, known as the dean of Western art, spent most of his adult life in El Cajon. “He couldn't not paint and everything he painted had a cowboy, an Indian or a horse in it,” said Jim Daniels of the Olaf Wieghorst Museum. Daniels said horses were in Wieghorst’s blood. “Great horseman having been around horses his whole life,” said Daniels. Wieghorst used his horse skills as a mounted patrolman in the New York Police Department. After he married a woman named Mae, he was motivated to leave the East Coast. “He was not enamored with her mother so he got out a map of the United States and wanted to find the place farthest from New York,” said Daniels. In 1945, Wieghorst started a new life in El Cajon as a natural artist with no formal training. “He traveled in a pickup truck with a camper shell on it and spent time with Navajo and local Indians all through the west,” Daniels said. Wieghorst often painted from a room which still shows paint splatters on the wall. As his reputation grew, so did his fans: Presidents Eisenhower, Ford, and Reagan, and celebrities including Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood. The painter also appeared in western movies with John Wayne, including “El Dorado” in 1967. “They became good friends and drinking buddies and John Wayne would come down and hang out with him.” Two of Wieghorst’s paintings, the Navajo Madonna and Navajo Man sold for more than million in 1985. However, interest in Wieghorst’s work has waned. “I think there's a lot of people around El Cajon still who've never heard the name and could care less, and there were a lot of people then who had no idea they had one of the greatest artists the world has ever had,” said Daniels. The Wieghorst Museum brings in children to keep the painter’s legacy alive. “Part of the strength of a community is remembrance of the past and appreciation of greatness and that's displayed through art.” Wieghorst died in 1988 at the age of 88. 2217

(CNS) -- A man who struck and seriously injured a bicyclist in Ramona last fall pleaded guilty Monday to felony charges of reckless driving resulting in serious injury and vandalism.Chase Edward Richard, 35, admitted hitting Michelle Scott from behind on state Route 67 near Dye Road with his Ford Edge last Oct. 2. Scott was struck around 6:15 a.m., and was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with serious injuries.She remained at the hospital for about two months before being transferred to a Poway nursing care facility, where she remains under full-time care, recovering from the brain injury she suffered in the crash, according to the Ramona Sentinel.Richard was arrested less than a week later. The California Highway Patrol said a tip from the public led investigators to Richard's damaged SUV in the garage of his Ramona residence.Richard agreed to a three-year, eight-month term that will include two years in local custody and 20 months of mandatory supervision.Per the terms of his plea agreement, Richard will also perform 200 hours of community service, a component of his sentence that Deputy District Attorney Valerie Ryan said was important to Scott's family.The victim volunteered with multiple local programs, including the local Community Emergency Response Team -- or CERT -- which trains and assists community members in response to emergency situations like natural disasters.Ryan said Scott's husband, Don, hopes that Richard can "do what he can to give back to the community because Mrs. Scott can no longer do that."The prosecutor said Don Scott is "hoping through this time on mandatory supervision that Mr. Richard can change and alter his behavior" and "contribute to the community" once he is released from custody."There's a lot of graciousness and generosity of heart in the Scott family, and they are hoping and looking for Mr. Richard to do better" Ryan said.Sentencing is slated for July 28. 1966

According to police, the stabbing happened around 10:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of El Cajon Boulevard near the Roadway Inn and Suites. Police say a group of people got into a fight when three victims were stabbed. Several people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. (KGTV) - In a vigil of hope held Friday night, at least 60 people shared their homes that an El Cajon teen who is reported missing in Phoenix would soon be found. Nineteen-year-old Kiera Bergman grew up in El Cajon and went to Valhalla High School, her aunt, Mindy Tarantino told 10News. The teen moved to Phoenix earlier this year with her boyfriend. Bergman's roommate reported her missing Monday when she didn’t return home and had not shown up to work.“We were told she left her house without her purse, without her car, why would she do that,” Tarantino said. “This isn't in her character. She doesn't stop communicating with people.”Kiera’s mother and sister are in Phoenix waiting for any word from the police. Meantime, her family and friends in El Cajon lit candles and prayed for her safe return.“We haven’t slept in this whole week. (KGTV) — El Cajon Police are warning residents of a recent string of street robberies that have occurred over the past several weeks.Police said the victims have been described as elderly men and have been physically assaulted from behind by a lone suspect. None of the victims report seeing a weapon, but have been robbed while walking on public sidewalks in the areas of the 1000 block of East Main Street and the 800 block of Buena Terrace.The suspect in each case varies, but has been described as either an African American, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern male within the ages of 20 to 40 years old.
