LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles mayor says National Guard troops will be deployed overnight as violence continues in the nation's second-largest city. Mayor Eric Garcetti said Saturday evening he asked Gov. Gavin Newsom for 500 to 700 members of the Guard. The mayor imposed a curfew on the city after crowds torched police cars and burglarized stores. Everyone was ordered to be off the streets until 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Clashes between protesters and lines of police officers came after an initially peaceful gathering. More than 500 people were arrested during clashes downtown Friday night. LONGMONT, Colo. -- Rosemary Bieker is the owner of a boutique store called Ivy Rose.“Ivy Rose has been in business a little over three years, and it’s a boutique full on on-trend clothing for women of all generations,” Bieker said.Bieker was inspired to start her own boutique after helping people look their best as a personal shopper for 15 years.“The store is a culmination of everything I’ve done in my career.”However, owning a small business is a fairly new endeavor for Bieker. So when the pandemic hit, it hit hard.“Business is down 50% from last year, so that in itself is a financial challenge,” Bieker said.Even with gloves, hand sanitizer and social distancing rules to stay safe, the truth is, fewer people are out shopping. Bieker says she had to learn how to do business virtually. The first step was upping her social media game.“I think I worked harder from March 17, when we were closed, until we reopened, than I ever have in the history of my store. Because you’re learning – like I didn’t know how to make a video, let alone a video of myself."After improving her social media, she knew she had to dig a little deeper to keep customers engaged. However, she didn’t want to go the e-commerce route – selling clothes through a website.“My passion is working with people and helping them one-on-one and wardrobing them and getting the feedback from them," Bieker said. "And e-commerce you basically put things in boxes, you ship them out.”Bieker doesn’t stand alone. Director of Denver Metro Small Business Development Center China Califf says most small businesses in retail thrive on the one-on-one connection with customers. That’s what sets them apart.“Maybe they didn’t have a product line that transitioned well to e-commerce but I’ve seen a lot of businesses that have been like ‘OK, now I have to enter into that space so I’m going to create something that’s aligned with what I already sell in my business and we’ll start with that,'” Califf said.Califf says the small business development center has received request after request of businesses seeking support to move business online. The center offers free consulting from industry experts and provides training courses.At Ivy Rose, Bieker found her own creative online solution. She calls it virtual shopping.“I schedule an appointment through Zoom," Bieker said. "And then what I do is I tour the store with the person just like if you were walking through the store yourself. So I go from rack to rack to rack. And that sounds overwhelming, but really it isn’t, especially if you’re interacting with the person.”Then Bieker rings up the purchase and can get it to the customer through shipping, curbside pickup or delivery if it’s local. Califf says the challenging growth small businesses have faced this year will help them in the future when competing with large companies that sell their products online.“It’s here to stay probably because when you think about diversifying your products and your sales channels, this is a good way to do it," Califf said. "And it’s an unfortunate time for people to be forced into that, but some of it will be lasting.”Bieker says her system has attracted new customers from out of state and she’s confident virtual shopping will continue even after the pandemic.“It’s fun. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Video released Tuesday shows the dramatic moment firefighters rescued three people and two dogs as thick smoke and flames approached in Southern California.The Los Angeles Fire Department video shows one of its helicopter crew rescuing the group from a mountain peak as a humongous wildfire bore down, coming as close as a football field.The Nov. 9 video was taken as pilots David Nordquist and Joel Smith battled the Woolsey Fire that was raging through the Santa Monica Mountains toward Malibu.The crew was making a water drop when it was asked to rescue the group. The pilots headed that way despite dwindling fuel.With smoke darkening the sky, they hunted for a landing spot among antenna towers, service buildings, cars and vegetation.They finally found a tight and tricky spot on top of a ridge and Smith got out to help the people and their pets, including an English mastiff who was afraid of the helicopter and had to be coaxed by its owner to get on board.Once everyone is safe inside, the pilots take off, with Smith remarking: "Ugh, that was close.""That's enough excitement for me today," he said as they pulled away from the massive smoke plumes.Nordquist responds: "You and me both, brother."Los Angeles fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said none of the people or animals was hurt. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) — Late Saturday, Los Angeles County changed its public health order to allow indoor religious services with modifications — something that could have implications for a South Bay church's legal battle.Los Angeles County's Department of Public Health issued the changes following a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Dec. 3 that places of worship in New York could reopen because coronavirus restrictions violated the First Amendment of the Constitution. The high court then sent an unsigned order to California judges to reconsider Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions.RELATED: Chula Vista church among churches suing over right to worshipThe updated protocols require places of worship to require masks that cover the nose and mouth worn at all times on-site and that capacity doesn't exceed the number of people who can be accommodated while observing physical distance:"All attendees/visitors must wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose at all times when in attendance and also at any time when they could come into contact with, or when walking past others who are non-household members.All attendees/visitors must observe a six-foot physical distance between themselves and others who are not members of their household. Measures have been implemented (advance registration, counting attendees at entry) to assure attendance does not exceed the number of people who can be accommodated with the required physical distancing in the indoor space.Seating is reconfigured to ensure that all attendees/visitors are able to maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet between themselves and others who are not members of their household.Clear pathways have been identified between parking areas and other arrival points to the service areas to minimize crowding and congregating, to allow for monitoring of occupancy and for entrance screening.A staff person (or staff people if there is more than one pathway) wearing a cloth face covering is posted at the entryway but at least 6 feet from the nearest arriving or departing person to monitor use of face coverings and track occupancy of attendees/visitors.If attendees/visitors must wait in line prior to being seated or at any other point during their presence at the site, markings are used to demonstrate the required 6-foot distance between individuals.If applicable, aisles within the area used for indoor services are designated as oneway to support physical distancing.Podiums, platforms and other speaker areas have been reconfigured to allow at least 6 feet between speakers or celebrants.Staff have been instructed to maintain at least a 6-foot distance from each other in all areas of the site.Virtual access is offered to visitors who wish to participate in services or events but are at high risk if exposed to COVID-19."The ruling could have implications in San Diego County, where South Bay United Pentecostal Church has been arguing against the state's COVID-19 restrictions on worshipping indoors since May.Senior Pastor Arthur Hodges told ABC 10News on Saturday that he's hopeful a hearing will grant the church permission to reopen indoors."Because [Los Angeles County] is so much worse than [San Diego] with COVID, we are hopeful our county leaders here will follow suit as LA and/or we will receive a favorable court ruling ASAP that will open San Diego," Hodges said, adding they're prepared to go above and beyond current coronavirus precautions.According to Hodges, the Supreme Court voted down their initial lawsuit 5-4 in May.Hodges says they are still waiting on a ruling from Friday's hearing. 3615

Los Angeles County, the state’s most populous, is averaging 2,000 reports a week on its tip lines with complaints ranging from a lack of hand sanitizer to improper cleaning of workplace bathrooms.
