Last year, taxpayers paid nearly 0 million for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Atlanta Falcons. New multi-million dollar sports facilities are being built all the time across the country to keep and attract teams. But who’s really benefiting from these big investments? It’s a similar story for Georgia’s baseball stadium."It's about a 2 million facility, SunTrust Park,” says Derek Schiller, president and CEO of the Atlanta Braves.Out of that 2 million, Schiller says roughly 0 million came straight from taxpayers in Cobb County, Georgia. It came after a measure approved by a five-person commission."They were elected by the community to represent them,” Schiller says. The total .1 billion project inside and outside the stadium was all part of a public-private package deal, and taxpayers like Georgia resident Anthony Sierra seem to be enjoying it."For everything I’ve seen lately, it's been a nice, little spot,” Sierra says.Sierra and his friend Brittany Reynolds say, overall, they're happy. However, they do question if their tax dollars could've been better spent.“I wasn't aware of the amount of money that went into it, Reynolds says."There's so much other things your money could go towards, like education."While this may seem like a game with public funds, Schiller says the long-term goal is to make it a home run for all, saying the stadium provides “great economic vitality” to the community."And within a few short years, the taxpayer will actually make money off of this entire arrangement,” Schiller says.He says the future revenue will eventually be funneled back into local needs, like education.“ million of that goes to the Cobb County school system,” Schiller says.Whether you think this is a win or loss for taxpayers, both sides agree on one thing."I think it’s an eyeopener for folks to make sure they're being politically savvy,” Sierra says.In order to have a say on this stadium or any other, it's all about stepping up to the plate to vote.“I really do think it's important for fans and constituents to know what we are doing with their funds and how their dollars are put to use,” Schiller says. 2171

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Breakdancing has been confirmed as an official Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee’s pursuit of urban events to lure a younger audience saw street dance battles officially added to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games. The IOC executive board also confirmed skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing for Paris. Those three sports will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games which were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ahead of the announcement, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach praised the additions, describing them during an interview in 2019 as events that will make the Summer Games "more gender balanced, more youthful and more urban."Breaking, the preferred term by those who practice breakdancing, actual made its Olympic debut already. It was part of the 2018 Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires. The Tokyo opening ceremony is July 23, 2021. Paris organizers need time to prepare and so the IOC kept its schedule to confirm the 2024 sports this month. 1058

LANSING, Mich. – A Michigan judge has dismissed a lawsuit by President Donald Trump's campaign in a dispute over whether Republican challengers had access to the handling of absentee ballots.Judge Cynthia Stephens noted that the lawsuit was filed late Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the last ballots were counted. She also said the defendant, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, was the wrong person to sue because she doesn’t control the logistics of local ballot counting, even if she is the state’s chief election officer. The Associated Press called the Michigan presidential election for Democrat Joe Biden on Wednesday evening. Trump won the state in 2016.The lawsuit claimed Benson, a Democrat, was allowing absentee ballots to be counted without teams of bipartisan observers as well as challengers. She was accused of undermining the “constitutional right of all Michigan voters ... to participate in fair and lawful elections.”Benson, through state attorneys, denied the allegations. Much of the dispute centered on the TCF Center in Detroit where pro-Trump protesters gathered while absentee ballots were being counted. 1144

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. The four people in the car he had pulled over weren't hurt.RELATED: CHP motorcycle officer killed near Lake ElsinoreIt's unclear if Callahan has an attorney. Inmate records show he has a court appearance set for Wednesday.Licon was a 27-year veteran of the agency and is survived by his wife, daughter and stepdaughter.Licon's body was taken to the coroner's office on Saturday night in a slow and somber procession.Acting Gov. Eleni Kounalakis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the state Capitol, and the California Highway Patrol is holding a bell tribute ceremony in his honor on Monday.Carapia, who knew Licon for six years, said the sergeant was well-liked and known for his work ethic and a distinct and quirky high-pitched laugh."He had a great sense of humor," Carapia said. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... Just an all-around great human being."He said Licon loved his job and the fact that his office was on a motorcycle."This is a tough one," he said. "It hits you to the core."Police departments and officers across the state took to social media to post about Licon.CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said Licon was a great leader "who sacrificed his life serving the people of California."CHP Headquarters tweeted that "our hearts are heavy ... LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said. The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said. She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. If they think they're getting the sales tax that comes from businesses, they're not going to get as much as they think they're going to get," she said.Councilman Jones was once opposed to a tax increase too, but now he say it's necessary."There are just no other alternatives if we want to stay a city," he said.Supporters have until September 30 to gather 1,489 signatures to qualify for the March 2020 ballot."We think we can" get enough signatures by the deadline, said Yadira Altamirano, one of the proponents of the Lemon Grove Tax Measure. "We need all of our neighbors and Lemon Grove registered voters to come sign the petition this weekend."Organizers will be collecting signatures in the Sprouts parking lot Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., she said.If the measure doesn't qualify for the March ballot, the council could step in and vote to put a measure on the November ballot, Councilman Jones said. 2239
