(KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture.They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old girl told Oceanside Police a man, possibly homeless, tried to kidnap her Thursday morning as she walked to El Camino High School. The girl was walking east on Mesa Drive near Vanilla Way at 7:20 a.m. and passed the man heading the opposite direction. After she walked by, the man turned and grabbed her in a bear hug, police said. The man struggled with the girl, who was able to break free when he fell to the ground, according to investigators. The girl arrived at school and notified security about the incident. Oceanside Police units and a drone were deployed to find the man but were not successful. The girl described the man as dirty or "possibly homeless" according to police, white, in his 50s, 5’9 inches tall, and very thin. He was wearing a tan pullover sweatshirt with a zipper and baggy black jeans. Police said the man may be bald on top of his head with short light brown hair on the sides. He also had a scab on the right side of his neck, the girl reported. Oceanside officers are asking anyone with information to call the department’s Family Protection Unit at 760-435-4690. 1144

One soldier has been killed and seven others have been injured after an explosion occurred during a training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.WTVD-TV reports that the explosion occurred when a vehicle rolled over. Reports originally indicated that as many as 15 soldiers had been injured.WTVD reported that Staff Sgt. Alexander P. Dalida, 32, of Dunstable, Massachusetts, died during a training exercise. According to to WRAL-TV, the soldiers were transported to a local hospital via medical helicopter. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California prosecutor says she's reopening an investigation into the killing of a 22-year-old Black man at a train station by a transit officer 11 years ago. Oscar Grant was shot and killed by a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer on New Year's Day in 2009. The officer was charged with murder, found guilty of a lesser charge, and served 11 months in jail.
