SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang had a full schedule on Saturday afternoon as he spent time in north Hebei Province visiting infant patients stricken by tainted milk powder, talking to doctors, dairy farmers and salesman in a local supermarket.     In Dingxing County Hospital of Hebei Province, he went to the infants ward where he talked to parents and inquired about the symptoms and progress of the patients' illness. Li made the remarks while talking to a salesman in Womei Supermarket in the county seat of Dingxing.     He then went to Shiqiao Village of Dingxing Township where he asked about the milk supply.     He asked local officials to take measures to ensure the farmers' interests would not be hurt by the scandal.     More than 6,200 infants developed kidney stones after drinking a baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is. The formula has so far killed four infants.     Dairy giant Sanlu based in the Hebei provincial capital of Shijiazhuang was the first company exposed in the scandal.

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush in the central government compound of Zhongnanhai, Hu said the Chinese side has always viewed and handled its relations with the United States from a long-term and strategic perspective.     Hu said China is willing to work with the U.S. side to promote dialogue and exchanges, enhance understanding and mutual trust, respect and care for each other's interest and concerns, and settle sensitive issues properly to ensure bilateral relations go along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with U.S. President George W. We will keep contact with the U.S. side and inform you of the new developments," said the Chinese president.    Bush thanked China for how it has handled the situation of Todd Bachman and his family, and also thanked Hu for his expression of sympathy.    Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minneapolis, were attacked by a man with a knife while touring the 13th-century Drum Tower of Beijing on Saturday. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China's top political advisory body met on Tuesday to call for ideas on rural development and reform.     The Standing Committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee will hold its third meeting in mid October. Its major topic is rural development and reform, according to a statement issued after a meeting of CPPCC National Committee chairman and vice chairpersons presided over by Chairman Jia Qinglin.     Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) members will meet from Oct. 9 to 12 in Beijing to discuss major issues about promoting reform and development in the rural areas at the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     Political advisors are expected to discuss the guidelines reached at the Party session, the statement said. "We shall present research findings our political advisors made about rural development and try our best to put forward as many good proposals as possible to the Party."     At Tuesday's meeting, Jia called on political advisors to take an active part in a nationwide campaign to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The campaign aims to push Party members, especially leading Party members and government officials, to learn how to implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and carry it out effectively.     Political advisors should think about how to implement it in the CPPCC's work to improve its supervision on the ruling Party and participation in state affairs, Jia said.
