OXFORD, Mich. - Upland Hills School in Oxford, Michigan, doesn't look like your traditional classroom setting; that's because it's not. But it is where around 90 students will be learning come fall, including Alicia Stewart's two sons.The independent tuition-based school has always used a very "nature forward" approach to learning, and this year, due to COVID-19, will rely on that model even more.“I did venture out to Target just recently and I saw all the back-to-school supplies and I don’t really have to get any of that," Stewart said. So to be outside for 2-3 hours a day is really typical for our students," said Director of School Rob Himburg.Because of COVID, outdoor learning will be central this fall. However, the school does also offers online learning.“This is going to be my new classroom for the coming year," said teacher Robert Crowe, walking around one of the school's former gardens.Social distancing should be easy outdoors and class sizes are always pretty small, given that Upland Hills only has around 70 families.Crowe said he wants to make sure students can get their work done outside too.“To be able to focus outdoors is not easy. So the solution I hit on was for every child to have their own individual tent," he said. Crowe said being able to learn in the outdoors gives students a unique sense of agency, something that traditional classrooms don't always provide.Students may also learn in larger, four-season tents, which can be heated in the winter.The school also has an indoor space, in the event teachers and students would need to go inside.Lessons will usually circle back to nature in some way, so that students are learning basic skills like mathematics in a hands-on way, like building a greenhouse Himburg said.Tuition for Upland Hills is a little more than ,000 annually, making this out of reach for some families.For Stewart, whose kids started at Upland Hills last year, this approach to learning has been really special and offered her sons an education she doesn't think they could get elsewhere.Classes at Upland Hills begin Aug. 17.Statewide, many districts are still in the process of deciding what approach is best for teachers and students: online learning, face-to-face, or a combination of the two. (KGTV) - A catamaran stuck in a Point Loma cave for nearly a week was pulverized by surf, according to the salvage crew.New photos and videos from Tow Boat US San Diego show unrecognizable pieces of fiberglass, and one hunk with the engine intact."There's no section left of the boat that looks like a boat at this point," Captain Tony Olson, with Tow Boat US San Diego, said.Last Friday morning two men on a fishing trip were rescued from a catamaran stuck inside a cave near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. The men fell asleep while the boat was set to autopilot.The surf was so rough since the crash, salvage crews couldn't re-enter the cave until Thursday afternoon. "It just completely pounds that thing, bouncing it off the walls like a pinball... trying to get behind it, next to it, in front of it, is a bad place to be," Olson said.The divers took pictures and were prepared to pump out fuel when they realized there was no fuel to be found, "there are no fuel tanks left to be found, they're gone. So in the process of the boat coming apart they have floated away, it did not smell like fuel inside the cave at all," he said.Three pieces of the boat came back with the crew, two hunks of fiberglass, "part of a hatch possibly," Olson said, and a steering wheel.Friday morning the crew will devise a plan to pick up the rest. "Float larger sections out possibly drag them off and hoist them up to a boat we'll have waiting out there," Olson said.The divers possibly swimming out the smaller debris. Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl at a hotel in Wickliffe, Ohio on Friday night.The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Econo Lodge Wickliffe-Cleveland East, 28611 Euclid Ave. Police said it appears the child's mother was handling a gun when it went off and the 2-year-old girl was shot in the chest.The mother initially told the 911 operator the gun's safety was off, but a few seconds later said the safety was on when she dropped the weapon."The safety was on when I dropped the gun and the bullet shot her. The gun dropped, I dropped my gun," the mother told the 911 operator. "She's gone. My baby's gone. She's not breathing at all. She's gone."The child was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from the injury, according to authorities.Police said the shooting appears to be accidental. The mother had the weapon legally and had a concealed carry permit. It will be left up to the Lake County Crime Lab and the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges are filed, police said. 1062

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – From China to Egypt and beyond, the halls of history span the globe.Yet, it’s been lonesome lately in those halls at some of the 35,000 museums across the country.“We, of course, wanted to reopen as soon as we could and safe a manner as we could,” said Melissa Smith, CEO of the Penn Museum in Philadelphia.It’s one of the few major museums to recently reopen to visitors, after coronavirus restrictions forced them to close their doors for months.“For the most part, it's business as usual with our exhibits,” Smith said.First, though, a task force of 35 museum employees needed to figure out what changes might be needed.“We had to look at a number of things,” Smith said.Among the changes: masks are a must, hand sanitizing stations are now located throughout the museum, clear partitions were installed to protect staff who interact with visitors and benches were marked off, so people can sit socially-distanced.Also, arrows now line the stairs and floors, carefully choreographing how visitors move through the exhibits.“They asked us to follow the arrows and it kind of was a different museum experience, but also I think very helpful, just because there wasn't any confusion,” said museum visitor Soheil Eshghi.There are a few other changes, too: some of the exhibits around the museum have touchscreens, so visitors can dig a little deeper into what’s on display and learn more. The museum is now giving out a disposable stylus to visitors, so they can safely use the touchscreens.Visitors said they don’t mind the changes and are just happy for the chance to come back.“I think that’s one of the things that I've been missing the most since all this shutdown started happening,” said Camille Lawhead, who was visiting the museum.Now, visitors no longer need to be missing it. 1813
