HOUSTON, Texas – Traveling during the holidays can be fun for some, but not so much for others. This year, an estimated 4.45 million Americans will fly for the Thanksgiving holiday, a 4.6% increase from last year. Knowing what’s happening in the air traffic at any given moment in time is half the battle. Luckily, there’s an app for that called FlightAware. The information for the app is aggregated at the company’s headquarters in Houston.Sherron Goodenough is the Director of Data Solutions for FlightAware, the world’s largest flight tracking and data platform, with over 10 million people using the web and mobile app each month. "We're tracking over 160,000 unique aircraft per day," said Goodenough. One popular feature is the misery map."It's basically a high-level overview of what is being impacted nationwide and you can zoom in to airport level and see how many delays and cancellations are occurring between certain segments or at a specific airport," said Goodenough. FlightAware receives and processes over 60 distinct data feeds from all over the world, including the FAA, global air traffic control, airlines and their own ADSB network. Goodenough says the next step is going beyond real-time tracking to forecasting."We're working on predictive technology efforts so we can just provide way better insight into what to expect for the flight," said Goodenough. The app helps to track everything from flight status to turbulence at your fingertips. 1477
Google is making it harder for political advertisers to target specific types of people. The company said that as of January, advertisers will only be able to target U.S. political ads based on broad categories such as gender, age and postal code. Currently, ads can be tailored for more specific groups — for instance, using information gleaned from public voter logs, such as political affiliation. The change will take effect in the UK in the next week, before the general election, and in the European Union before the end of 2019. It will apply everywhere else in early January.Google reiterated that ads making false claims are prohibited, adding that so-called deepfakes — realistic but false video clips — are not allowed. Neither are “demonstrably false” claims that could affect voter trust in an election. But in a 835
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg will not attend a hearing in Ottawa on Tuesday, despite receiving summonses from the Canadian parliament, Facebook confirmed on Monday. The decision could result in the executives being held in contempt of parliament, the senior Canadian politician who sent the summons told CNN.Both executives received formal requests from the Canadian Parliament earlier this month tied to a gathering of an international committee examining Silicon Valley's impact on privacy and democracy. Zuckerberg and Sandberg have testified before the United States Congress on the subject. On Monday night, Bob Zimmer MP, the chair of the committee, said that Facebook had not told the committee whether its two most senior executives would be attending. He said committee members learned on CNN that Zuckerberg and Sandberg would not testify.A Facebook spokesperson disputed that on Tuesday morning, saying the company had told the committee it would be sending Kevin Chan, its head of public policy for Facebook Canada, and Neil Potts, its director of public policy, to the meeting. The spokesperson added the company had been in ongoing communication with the committee.Lawmakers from at least ten countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, are expected to attend the meeting, which is the second of its kind. The first meeting of the committee last year in London resulted in the release of 1441
Former Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that he will not run for president in 2020."Though I will not run for president in 2020, I will continue to fight for the future of our country through the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and its affiliates," Holder, who served under President Barack Obama, wrote in a 346
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg filed an official statement of candidacy on Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. But this doesn't necessarily mean he will run for president.Bloomberg's team filed paperwork Thursday that says he would seek the Democratic presidential nomination, but it was done out of necessity. The former mayor took this step because he filed paperwork to appear on the Democratic primary ballot in Alabama and Arkansas earlier this month. He was required to file paperwork with the FEC within 15 days of taking that step. His aides have said this is not an official decision or announcement of his candidacy. This story will be updated. 684
