ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has completed its probe into the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks, more than three months after the Black man was fatally shot by a white officer outside a fast-food restaurant in Atlanta.Agency spokesperson Nelly Miles confirmed to E.W. Scripps in an email that the findings from the investigation were turned over to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard on Monday.Miles told E.W. Scripps in an email that the case file is not available for release at this time.Howard has already charged two officers involved in the June 12 incident.Former Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe and officer Devin Brosnan arrived at a Wendy's because Brooks' vehicle was parked in the drive. He was asleep at the wheel, which surveillance video and footage from police body and dashboard cameras show.After a brief discussion, the officers submitted Brooks to a field sobriety test, which he failed.According to officials, Brooks offered to lock his parked car and walk home, but the officers informed him he was under arrest. A struggle ensued, Brooks tried to flee the scene after grabbing Brosnan's stun gun. Rolfe then shot Brooks in the back when Brooks pointed the stun gun in Rolfe's direction.On June 17, Rolfe was charged with felony murder and 10 other crimes, including four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and several violations of his oath of office.Brosnan was placed on administrative duty and is currently free on a ,000 signature bond, CNN reported. Brosnan faces charges of aggravated assault and violations of oath of office.In July, Rolfe was released from jail after posting a 0,000 bond. As more and more public spaces open back up, many people are finding themselves a little jumpy when they hear someone cough nearby. Are they sick, is it allergies, is it coronavirus?Chances are, we are jumping to conclusions about those “sick” sounds we find disgusting, according to a recently published study from the University of Michigan and University of California, Irvine.“We find no evidence that perceivers can reliably detect pathogen threats from cough and sneeze sounds, even though they are reasonably certain they can,” said Nicholas Michalak, the study’s lead author and a University of Michigan psychology graduate student.In other words, we humans are not very good at distinguishing the seriousness of a cough or sniffle by the sound of it. In fact, the study found that the more disgusting a person perceived the sound to be, the more likely they were to believe the sound came from an infected person, regardless of whether it did.Previous research has indicated people can accurately diagnose infection in others using other senses, like sight and smell.The research is based on four studies that had participants judge whether a cough or sneeze sound came from people infected with a communicable (easily spread) disease or not. On average, participants guessed four out of ten sounds correctly.“Moreover, there was no evidence that accuracy improved when participants knew the true number of infectious sounds in advance or when participants focused on how clear or disgusting they perceived the sounds,” Michalak said. “Despite this poor overall accuracy, perceivers consistently reported reasonable certainty in their judgments.”The study’s authors theorized that people have a belief that a sound that disgusts them is likely to represent a disease threat - this could lead them to exhibit biases to avoid interactions with others who make disgusting but noninfectious noises, according to Mickalak.The study’s co-authors are Oliver Sng, assistant professor of psychological science at UC-Irvine, and U-M graduate student Iris Wang and U-M associate professor of psychology Joshua Ackerman.Read the full study here. 2150

  

As the Carr Fire becomes the seventh most destructive wildfire in California's history, renowned chefs Guy Fieri and José Andrés are doing everything they can to help feed the evacuees and first responders."My team and I got involved. My son and his buddies, and a bunch of my buddies, loaded up the caravan from wine country and drove four hours up here," Fieri said."We are just working arm-in-arm with the Salvation Army, local chefs, residents and everybody helping out all of the evacuees."More than 12,300 firefighters are battling 15 wildfires burning across California. In total, these fires have burned more than 280,000 acres, and forced more than 44,000 residents to evacuate.The Carr Fire began on July 23 in Northern California, and on Saturday Fieri arrived in Redding, a city of almost 100,000 people where the fire swept through. Two days after Fieri got there, José Andrés' nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, joined him and fellow food first responders, Operation BBQ Relief."We hit the ground on Monday and started our meal operation today. Guy is heading to the Lake County Fire and we are taking over, and continue the efforts here in Redding," said Nate Mook, Executive Director for World Central Kitchen.With the help of Operation BBQ Relief, Fieri and his team were able to make over 1,000 meals twice a day, Mook said.BBQ Relief, whose main mission is to feed those affected by natural disasters in the United States, has around 30 volunteers and with World Central Kitchen's help it totals to 100 people on the ground to help feed those in need."We are planning to do 5,000 meals a day or more, depending on the need. We have the capacity and are prepared to cook 5,000 meals a day with no problem," Mook said.Fieri, alongside World Central Kitchen and BBQ Relief, are able to plan where help is needed the most by working with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, who oversee the incident response.That way they can travel across the state to help everyone affected by the multiple wildfires."It's unbelievable to see what folks are going through, but it's even more unbelievable just how great this community is, and [to see] all these folks that have come together," Fieri said.Andrés is not in California, but he has been monitoring the situation and will fly in if needed."We got six chefs in Redding. Depending on the need we will bring more chefs and volunteers. We don't know what the next four days will look like, so he will be paying close attention," Mook said.Andrés recently left Guatemala, where he and his team were able to make more than 325,000 meals for those?affected by the volcano eruption last month.Mook said that even though the numbers can look a bit overwhelming, the volunteers get inspiration and passion to help those in need from all the support they receive from the communities."At the end of the day you just have to start somewhere, and just start cooking, cooking until everyone is fed," Mook said.As for Fieri, he takes pride in all the folks who drop everything just to help."We're in tough times ... with all of the things going on, you take a moment like this and you really see America is made of a lot of great people coming together," Fieri said. 3252

  

At 16 years old, Gabe Richards has been working hard to get good grades.He's secured straight As while being a part of the special education program at Marysville High School in Michigan.But, after getting invited to be honored at an academic awards ceremony Monday night, Gabe said he was disappointed to be told at the event that his invite was a mistake."We were really excited and don't get the chance to celebrate achievements all the time," said his mother Stefanie Grassel.Grassel said the faculty did apologize and acknowledge they mistakenly sent an invitation letter.However, as a mother, Grassel said she wants to see the policy changed to become more inclusive."It sends the message that they are less than a general education student, and that's wrong," she added.Richards also told us he feels disappointed after what happened. District superintendent Shawn Whiteman refused to do an interview in response to what happened. Instead, he issued the following statement addressing the matter:"The criteria for students to receive the distinguished “Academic Award” from Marysville High School are a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 and that they are enrolled in a certain amount of academic-based classes.After speaking with our high school principal, it was evident that a mistake was made when identifying students for this award, due to the fact that a letter was sent home inviting a student to the ceremony who didn’t meet the full criteria.It is clear that the high school made an error in identifying students for this year’s award and we respectfully apologize for any grief this has caused.  Because of this, we will be taking corrective action so that this does not happen again in the future." 1768
