NEW YORK CITY — In what New York City's mayor is calling a "Christmas miracle," an NYPD officer is conscious and communicating after he was shot in the back in Brooklyn while responding to a 911 call for a domestic dispute, police said.The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday night.Police said the alleged shooter has been arrested and the gun was recovered. A bulletproof vest protected the 27-year-old officer, who was rushed to a local hospital after being shot near Prospect Place and Ralph Avenue. It went into the vest, but didn't penetrate the officer's skin, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.The shooter allegedly threatened his girlfriend, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.The girlfriend's mother repeatedly called 911, begging for police to come, Shea said. She said the boyfriend had threatened to shoot the home up. As officers on the scene interviewed the daughter, her boyfriend arrived.He shot an officer and then ran, Shea said. Other officers pursued and arrested him a few blocks away. Body camera video shows officers repeatedly tell the shooter to drop his gun. He put it down on the sidewalk and was taken into custody."Because the NYPD was there, that woman is alive right now," de Blasio said. "Because our officer put himself in harm's way, an innocent woman is alive."The officer’s precise condition wasn’t immediately clear, but police officials said the officer was awake and responsive and has since been released from the hospital.De Blasio and Shea spoke to the officer's parents."They felt that this was a Christmas miracle that their son was alive and well," de Blasio said.The NYPD asked people to avoid the area. People were advised to expect a police presence in the area."It's Christmas Eve. NEWPORT BEACH (CNS) - Ten firefighters and 11 lifeguards have recently tested positive for COVID-19 in Newport Beach, officials confirmed today.The numbers are a cumulative total throughout the past month and most have already returned to work, Fire Chief Jeff Boyles told City News Service.The infections apparently happened through community spread and not while the firefighters and lifeguards were on duty.Boyles told the Los Angeles Times that all fire stations and trucks remain staffed, but the department is not sending crews to help fight brush fires in other counties. 586

NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks.His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started.The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. "It was a recipe for disaster."The FDNY has set up one of a number of informational booths across the city to inform residents of the dangers of setting off fireworks, given the dramatic spike in complaints."A lot of times, the people that are being harmed are the bystanders," Koco said.In the last nine days, fire marshals in New York have arrested 17 people and confiscated nearly ,000 worth of illegal fireworks.It took 60 firefighters to knock down the blaze started by fireworks at 51st Street."They're illegal for a reason," Koco said.
