LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams.While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity.At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams.The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery.The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said. JACUMBA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Border Patrol and a host of other government agencies are investigating after authorities found a cross-border tunnel in the east San Diego County town of Jacumba.The tunnel was discovered by Mexican State Police on September 19 just 221 feet south of the U.S./Mexico boundary.On October 4, agents found an entry point that was roughly 31 feet deep. The total length of the tunnel is 627 feet, 336 feet of which is in the United States.The average length of the tunnel was three feet high and two and a half feet wide. An exit shaft was discovered, but didn't break the surface into the U.S. RELATED: Cross-border tunnel leading to KFC found in YumaOn top of the massive tunnel, authorities discovered a complex system used to light and ventilate the tunnel. The system included solar panels used to run the electrical, lighting and ventilation systems, and a pump system used to get rid of any water inside the tunnel.Authorities didn’t say whether any arrests have been made or what the tunnel was supposed to be used for, though the Drug Enforcement Administration is one of the investigating agencies. 1149

Just weeks ahead of the midterm elections, U.S. election databases are coming under attack.A new report finds election hacking attempts have been building since April. One troubling note: the government does not know who is behind the attacks.“Well, it is worrisome. The more we know, the better,” says John Fortier, with the Bipartisan Policy Center. “But I also do think, in the world that we have, we are going to have unknown actors, whether foreign or domestic, making attempts to get into systems.”The good news is that, so far, Homeland Security says none of the attacks have been successful.Fortier thinks that's a sign of enhanced election security and better communication between election officials.“I think we are in a better place now to identify those threats and communicate those threats between federal and local and state election officials, and I think that's a step up,” Fortier says.As the midterms approach, the head of Homeland Security says the government will also be using other security tools, including sensors that allow federal officials to see inside state computer systems in order to detect if there are signs of hacking attempts.“Our network security sensors will cover 90 percent of registered voters,” says Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen. “And on election day, we'll be in full force and hosting a virtual nationwide situation room to assist our partners.Experts continue to insist that voter databases, like registration information, is more at risk than hackers being able to change actual votes. 1559

James Comey is embarking on a publicity tour.The former FBI director is planning a series of media appearances to promote his book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership," starting with an ABC News interview airing Sunday evening at 10 p.m., ET. It's the first sit-down, televised interview Comey has given since he was fired by President Donald Trump last year and the first in a series of interviews he will sit for in the coming weeks. CNN's Jake Tapper is set to interview Comey on April 19. CNN's Anderson Cooper will host a town hall with Comey on April 25."A Higher Loyalty" won't be formally released until next week, but explosive details have already spilled out into the media. Major media outlets, including CNN, obtained copies of the book this week and quickly published reports on its scathing and unsparingly critical depictions of the President. According to those reports, Comey writes that Trump is "unethical and untethered to the truth" and compares his presidency to a "forest fire."Trump and his allies have already launched a counterattack. The President called Comey "a LEAKER & LIAR" in a pair of tweets Friday morning, describing the former FBI director as an "untruthful slime ball" and saying that Comey should be prosecuted for leaking classified information. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders joined in the criticism by tweeting a link to a video from the Republican National Committee accusing Comey of lacking credibility.Comey has indeed faced criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike -- and the release of his book gives him a high-profile platform to defend himself. Democrats have faulted Comey for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state. Comey announced in July 2016 that he would not recommend charges against Clinton, but stated publicly that Clinton and her aides had been "extremely careless" in handling classified information. Clinton herself has pointed to Comey's actions in explaining her presidential election loss. But Comey writes in his book that after the 2016 election, then-President Obama told Comey that he remained confident in his "integrity" and "ability."The publicity tour -- and the book -- will be the first time the American public has heard extensively from Comey since his explosive testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee in June of last year. In a written statement to the committee, Comey claimed that Trump had asked him for "loyalty." Bean became the latest retailer to announce that it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to customers younger than 21.In response to a tweet from one consumer asking the outdoors retailer to change its policy, the Maine-based retailer replied late Thursday, "In the wake of this shooting we have reviewed our policy on firearm sales, and we will no longer be selling guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21."It's the fourth high-profile retailer to change its policy on gun sales to younger customers in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting last month.On Wednesday Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, and Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, announced new their restrictions.
