TAIPEI, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least 62 people were killed and 57 others are missing in Taiwan as of 8 p.m. Tuesday local time after Morakot, the worst typhoon to hit the region in nearly five decades, swept across the island.     Another 35 people were injured after the typhoon hit much of the central-south part of the island. The casualty list did not include a crew of three on board a helicopter that crashed during a disaster-relief mission in southern Pingdong.     Powerful wind paralyzed the power supply for 1.58 million households as of 6:30 p.m. Monday, 1.51 million of which have restored power. Typhoon Morakot also damaged telecom facilities in central-south Taiwan, according to local disaster-relief authorities. BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders on Sunday attended a concert of a renowned Chinese singer to commemorate the 70th anniversary of her participation into the country's revolutionary artistic cause.     Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun and He Guoqiang, all members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, attended the concert performed by Wang Kun and her students.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory letter to the show, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.     Wang Kun, born in 1925, was the protagonist in the opera of the White-Haired Girl, a household legend describing the sufferings by local farmers under the exploitation of landlords before 1949.

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong has asked schools to educate students comprehensively about national unity during recent a tour to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.     Liu said teachers should play a guiding role in helping students become "forceful practitioners, loyal promulgators, and strong guards" of national unity.     Great efforts should be made to develop education, science and technology, and culture in Xinjiang, Liu said. She called for contributions toward building a prosperous, affluent and harmonious socialist Xinjiang.     During the tour Liu visited educational institutes, cultural organizations and a company engaged in renewable energy.

MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.

HOHHOT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The key to social harmony and stability in China is to strengthen and improve the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi Jinping, Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a tour of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Xi said issues concerning economic development and social stability were top priority in the country's minority areas during his tour from Aug. 22 to 25.     He visited villages, customs posts, companies, communities and schools in Hulun Buir, Manzhouli, Baotou, Erdos, and Hohhot.
