JERUSALEM, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A recent study carried out by Israeli researchers showed that the experience of motherhood is caused by alterations in the brain functions that help mothers locate and communicate with their offspring, especially if they are in distress.Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said the results provide insight into how neural changes in response to odors and sounds help maternal behaviors develop in mothers."We know that distinct brain changes are linked with motherhood, " Dr. Adi Mizrahi, who conducted the research, said, "but the impact of these changes on sensory processing and the emergence of maternal behaviors are largely unknown."Mizrahi and his colleagues examined whether the primary auditory cortex -- a region in the brain that is involved in the recognition of sounds -- might serve to process the responses to their offspring's specific smell and voice. The research proved that the olfactory and auditory senses of female mice with their pups were triggered immediately after they gave birth, with especially strong responses to cries of distress."These processes help to explain how changes in the cortex in the brain facilitate efficient detection of pups," Mizrahi said.

VIENNA, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer here Monday and laid out a multi-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.During the meeting, Hu spoke highly of the ties between the two countries, saying that China values its relations with Austria and is willing to join hands with Austria to elevate bilateral ties to a higher level. Then he proposed that the two sides enhance their political relationship based on equality and mutual trust, continue with their frequent high-level contacts and steer bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. The two countries should also expand their mutually beneficial economic and trade relations, he said, while calling for concerted efforts to fight trade protectionism and encourage mutual investment so as to achieve a balanced, diversified and sustainable trade relationship.Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) shakes hands with his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer (R) in Vienna, Austria, Oct. 31, 2011. Hu Jintao held talks with Heinz Fischer in Vienna Monday.China is willing to import more goods from Austria and to work with Austria to seek cooperation with third countries in Central and Eastern Europe, said the Chinese president, who also asked Austria to create favorable conditions for Chinese investors in Austria.Meanwhile, Hu urged Vienna to play a more active role in pushing for the EU's recognition of China's full market economy status and for a lift of the bloc's restrictions on high-tech exports to China. In the culture sphere, the two sides should promote people-to-people exchanges and boost cooperation in culture, eduction and media among others, Hu said.In addition, the two countries should also deepen cooperation in multilateral mechanisms to jointly push for a more just and fairer international political and economic order, Hu said.China, he added, is willing to enhance cooperation and coordination with Austria on important issues such as global economic governance, climate change, energy security and peaceful settlement of international disputes.History has proven that as long as the two sides understand and support each other, and respect each other's social systems and development models, the bilateral relationship can achieve long-term, steady and healthy development, Hu said.Fischer, for his part, said that he fully agrees with Hu's proposal, adding that his country is willing to enhance cooperation with China in culture, science and technology and tourism and expand coordination in the United Nations and other multilateral frameworks.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chickens began being domesticated in China about 8,000 years ago, far earlier than in the rest of the world, according to a recent study on fossils uncovered in north China's Hebei Province.Archaeologists said they had unearthed 116 fossil specimens from 23 types of animals, including pig, dog, chicken, tortoise, fish, and clam, at the Cishan Site, a Neolithic village relic in the city of Wu'an.Several bone fragments were identified to be from domesticated chickens, said Qiao Dengyun, head of the Handan Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology."The chicken bones found at Cishan are slightly larger than wild jungle fowls, but smaller than that of a modern domesticated chicken," said Qiao.Qiao said the bone fossils date back to 6,000 BC, earlier than the oldest domesticated chicken previously discovered in India that dated back 4,000 years."Most of the bones were from cocks, indicating that ancient residents used the practice of killing cocks for their meat and raising hens for their eggs," said Qiao. The Cishan Site, which dates back 10,000 years, was first discovered in the 1970s. At the site, experts have found remnants of China's oldest cultivated millet as well as walnut shells, a discovery that challenged the popular belief that walnuts had been brought to China from what is now Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Central Asia.

NEW DELHI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Suspected encephalitis has killed over 100 children in the northern Indian state of Bihar since June, reported local media Saturday. At least 51 children in Bihar's Gaya district died of the epidemic in the last seven weeks, in the wake of the death of 55 children in a similar outbreak of the brain disease in another district of the state earlier, reported Indo-Asian News Service. Most of the children belong to a caste known for its absolute poverty.According to district health officials, all children have died at Anugrah Narain Medical College and Hospital in Gaya, about 100 km from the state capital Patna. The children reported high fever, followed by bouts of unconsciousness and convulsions. So far, more than 220 children with suspected encephalitis were admitted for treatment, with over two dozens of the children still battling for life, according to the report.Earlier, Indian Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said clinical and epidemiological data suggested that there was an outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome, resulting in 150 cases and 55 deaths, mostly among children, from early June to mid-July in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's progress in meeting a development goal on children's health can serve as an inspiration to other countries working towards the same objective, Dr. Renee Van de Weerdt, chief of maternal, newborn and child health at the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Xinhua in an interview Friday.Van de Weerdt said that "the example of China is very encouraging because it means it can be done, even in a very big country with a very big population."China is on track to meet the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), one of the eight development targets that the international community has pledged to meet by 2015. MDG 4 requires that each country reduce its rate of mortality for children under age five to two-thirds of what it was in 1990.According to Van de Weerdt, most deaths of children under five take place in the first month of life. After the first month, the most prevalent causes of death are pneumonia and diarrhea.ACHIEVING THE GOAL WORLDWIDEThe international community has been doing "relatively well" in working towards achieving MDG 4, Van de Weerdt said. The UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME) stated in their 2011 Report on Levels and Trends in Child Mortality that the number of under-five deaths worldwide has dropped from more than 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010."We really continue to see progress," Van de Weerdt said. "The number of children that die every year continues to drop so we are really pleased to see that progress. Unfortunately, the progress isn't sufficient to really be able to say that if we continue at this pace we would achieve MDG 4 by 2015."Some regions, according to Van de Weerdt, like Latin America and parts of Asia are making more headway towards the goal than others that are currently lagging behind.
