ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new technology is being hailed as a "game changer" by some experts as it takes aims at those achy, tiresome commutes. Cadillac's Super Cruise, the only hands-free semi-autonomous driving feature on the highways, is now on roads in Southern California.Once on the highway, the feature is activated with the push of a button on the steering wheel. The feature allows the driver to go feet- and hands-free as long as you stay in one lane. "If someone slows down in front of me, it will slow down our speed," said Drew Doran.While other driver-assistance systems use cameras to center a car, Doran says General Motors has extensive laser mapping of US highways that leads to better accuracy."It actually knows what is ahead of the vehicle," said Doran. On a one-hour-long drive, it tracked every curve and every time, it stayed in the center of the lane. The driver is still expected to be on standby. A camera on the steering wheel watches for distractions. If the driver is doing something like reading and blocking that camera, it will warn the driver.When we blocked the camera, a green light flashed - the first of several alerts - before Super Cruise disengaged. Doran says he recently went on a trip to Los Angeles with his wife. He says he used Super Cruise for about 80 percent of a drive that left him feeling relaxed. "Not the usual back pain. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A surfer died after being rescued from Swami's Beach Monday morning, Encinitas city officials confirm. Lifeguards and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported ocean rescue in the surf line at Swami's Beach just after 11 a.m. Monday. After arriving, crews found a man submerged with his surfboard attached and floating on the surface of the water while bystanders tried to rescue the surfer. The man was taken to shore where crews performed CPR. He was then taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died. At this time, the circumstances surrounding the death are unclear. 650
EUCLID, Ohio — The woman who filed a federal lawsuit against a Euclid Police officer Thursday said she was humiliated and feared for her life when the Ohio officer allegedly assaulted her.In an interview on Friday with WEWS, Euclid, Ohio resident Shajuan Gray, 46, described in detail what she said happened on March 27, 2017, when Officer James Aoki came to her apartment.Gray said she was in the shower when she heard a knock on the door that day.She came out with a towel on and saw Aoki outside. She cracked the door open and asked what was going on.“He started shouting he was tired of me, got complaints about me and to turn down my music,” Gray said. “Which I did because at this point I’m flabbergasted. I’m shocked, like, what is this about?”Gray said that’s when Aoki put his foot in her door and “barged” into her apartment without probable cause. She said he then slammed her against the freezer and arrested her, leaving bruises on her body.“As he’s slamming me and pushing me against the freezer and refrigerator, he’s twisting my arms up in an uncomfortable position,” she said. “I’m telling him then, ‘You’re hurting me. Why are you doing this to me? Please stop.’ ”In the lawsuit, Gray alleged she was only wearing a bath wrap at the time of the incident, and it fell off while Aoki assaulted her, exposing her chest. She claimed he would not allow her to get dressed before he took her to the police department. That video showed Gray walking down the stairs of her apartment in handcuffs wearing only a towel. She can be heard asking to be allowed to put on clothes and telling officers they're hurting her. “So at this point, I’m screaming and yelling with all the mixed emotions going on, crying, just in disbelief that this was happening,” Gray said. “[I was] humiliated, embarrassed, disrespected, everything. Just ashamed.”Gray also said after Aoki arrested her, he slammed her against the police cruiser.She said she feared for her life.“This is the point where I’m asking him and telling him, ‘Please let me get dressed.’ And I’m still saying, ‘You’re hurting me.’ Nothing. This man had nothing in his eyes,” she said. “It was just the worst day of my life.”After the incident, Gray filed a complaint with the Euclid Police Department. WEWS investigators obtained a copy of the complaint,as well as the findings of the police's internal investigation.These findings include Aoki's account of what happened. He said he responded to Gray's apartment on a criminal complaint of "excessive noise" called in by another resident, and heard the loud music coming from her residence.Police said Gray refused to provide her name and tried to shut the door on the officer. Police also alleged Aoki attempted to arrest Gray and she resisted. "You continued to resist and the officer used the force necessary to take you into custody," the findings said, in part. "It was unfortunate that your turbulent behavior caused you to have a wardrobe malfunction, although, according to video footage and in opposition to your statement, your top was up and your breasts were not exposed when you were escorted outside of the apartment complex in handcuffs."The internal investigation found Gray's complaint to be "not sustained."Gray was acquitted of the charges filed against her stemming from the incident, which included resisting arrest, obstruction of official business and noise violation charges.Her lawsuit, which alleges false arrest, malicious prosecution and excessive force, said Gray suffered and continues to suffer physical, emotional and psychological injuries, as well as economic losses.The injuries suffered by Gray were "preventable" had Aoki "not engaged in unconstitutional conduct in violation of her fundamental rights,” the complaint said.In addition, the lawsuit alleges the City of Euclid failed to "effectively" investigate the incident or discipline Aoki for "illegal behavior" and "false testimony."WEWS reviewed city records and found Aoki has been involved in 15 other incidents involving the use of force since 2016 — the eighth highest number of any officer within the police department.Gray’s lawsuit was the sixth filed against the city for excessive force in the last two years.Euclid Police has not responded to WEWS's multiple requests for comment. 4557

ENCINITAS, Calif (KGTV) -- An Encinitas business owner is trying to spread awareness about the challenges her employees face when customers refuse to follow the public health orders issued during the pandemic.Kris Buchanan owns GOODONYA Organic on the 101 in Encinitas. She posted a video discussing what she calls "The great mask debate" with one of her employees.Alex, the employee, talks about how it's exhausting constantly reminding customers to wear a face covering, but Buchanan said her employees deal with much more than that."I think people should realize the issue is not the business and I'm not trying to skirt the issue. I'm just trying to be real, we can't enforce, we don't have the skills, we don't have the training, we don't have the money to go through the training, and I don't want to put my people in that situation," said Buchanan.Buchanan said her employees are dealing with customers who refuse to wear masks, but also customers who are upset that other people aren't wearing masks."I think every business has a responsibility to do the right thing, to follow the guidelines and so it's not like we're just, we don't want to talk about it, I think the point to know is we do try and, they don't listen to us," said Buchanan.She has spent thousands of dollars on PPE, moving the restaurant outdoors and increasing sanitation protocols, but she says there's not much she can do when crowds of people and tourists walk right past her outdoor tables without masks. She also paid for her employees to be tested after one of them caught COVID-19 in June."It's like, do you know how much money we're spending and what we are doing to even try to stay alive? And you're in for a snapshot in time, and you see something, and you threaten to turn us into the local authorities, I'm like I don't even know who that would be, but go ahead," said Buchanan.She points to a religious rally held recently at Cardiff State Beach. Thousands of people attended with few face coverings and little social distancing.A spokesman with California State Parks said a permit was not issued for the event and that the gathering was not allowed."When you saw the 1,000 people at Cardiff gathering, it was disheartening, that's right down the street from our business. So, we definitely got customers after that ceremony, and here they walk past the sheriff, they walk past the lifeguard and they walk past the state beach guys, who work for the state, didn't get a ticket, and now they come into some random cafe," said Buchanan.Instead of expecting employees to police guidelines, she encourages customers to contact their local elected leaders."Asking the cashiers, and the waitresses and the servers to kind of implement an escalated situation is not fair and not right, and it won't work anyway," said Buchanan.She hopes people will do the right thing."Do you want cops issuing tickets?
