(KGTV) - A Monterey Cypress known as the “Dr. Seuss Tree” or “The Lorax Tree” toppled over early Thursday morning in La Jolla.The unique shaped tree has been theorized to be the inspiration for the colorful trees in “The Lorax,” written in 1971 by Theodor Geisel, known best as "Dr. Seuss."Geisel lived in La Jolla from 1948 until he died in 1991. The tree is located in Ellen Browning Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove.The tree had become a tourist destination for Seuss fans around the world, with its long, drooping branches and leaves.As of Thursday night the tree was still lying on the ground. Joseph James DeAngelo, who police believe is the Golden State Killer, appeared in a California court Friday, but did not enter a plea to the murder charges he faces in the 1978 deaths of Katie and Brian Maggiore.The 72-year-old defendant was brought into the Sacramento County courtroom in a wheelchair and represented by a public defender.DeAngelo is "depressed and right now, fragile," attorney Diane Howard told CNN. DeAngelo spoke only a few words at the hearing, telling the judge very slowly in a feeble voice that he would accept a court-appointed attorney.Howard told reporters that she feels her client has received "unfair press." 648

KEARNY MESA (KGTV): A San Diego surfer is making a name for himself on the Professional Big Wave World Tour. He's now using his newfound fame to help kids in Southern California hospitals.Jo Jo Roper is in his first year on tour. Just before Thanksgiving, he shredded a 60-foot wave in Portugal."That feeling, it's hard to describe," Roper says of surfing waves that big. "Sometimes you black out, to be honest, you don't even remember what happened."Roper says he remembers everything from the wave this week. It was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream and years of preparation."It's really difficult," he says. "So when you line one up, it's that much more rewarding to kick out a wave."Roper comes from a family of pro surfers. His dad, Joe Roper, surfed professionally in the '70s and '80s. He stopped when he had kids, and says it's a thrill to watch Jo Jo pick up the family mantle."He's taken it to another level," says Joe Roper. "I'm so proud of him."Jo Jo is giving his parents a lot to be proud of outside of surfing. He's starting working with City of Hope Hospital in Los Angeles. It helps treat kids with cancer. "These kids are stronger than anything I've ever done," he says. "What they go through is on a whole other level of what's amazing. I'm just trying to bring some joy to them."Jo Jo has the kids decorate his surfboards with their handprints and signatures. He looks at them for inspiration when he's riding the big waves."It's very heartwarming for me," he says. "It gives me a bigger purpose when I'm sitting in the line-up. I look down and have all these kids on my side. It's awesome."Jo Jo will auction off the boards he uses on the pro tour later this year. The money will go to City of Hope. KENOSHA, Wis. — Multiple buildings were set on fire in Kenosha Monday night amid protests against police brutality, a day after a Black man was shot several times in the back by officers.According to news crews with Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee, the buildings were set ablaze at about 11:30 p.m. local time on Monday night. It is unclear how the fires started, who started them, or when they started. However, many people could be seen walking around the burning buildings.Earlier in the night, a large truck was also set on fire.One of the fires was by Sheridan and 60th at a tire shop.Another fire was started at an abandoned building across from the tire shop. 676

Jake, a coonhound, wandered a long way from his Arizona home -- more than 2,000 miles to be exact."We are just really baffled by it," said Renae Metz with A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue in Pennsylvania.A good Samaritan found the 7-year-old dog near a YMCA in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh. When they scanned him for a microchip, they found one, and it came back registered to Phoenix."We thought maybe a truck driver possibly found Jake in the middle of the night and didn't know what to do with him and brought him home, but we don't know that that's a fact," Metz said.After finding the microchip, they made the phone call to Jake's owners."We have a 7-year-old coonhound here who is registered to you, are you missing your dog?" Metz asked the owners.It turns out they were, for the past year. Jake disappeared from their north Peoria home. Getting Jake back wouldn't be easy with a brand new baby, but Metz wasn't about to give up on getting the dog home."We have 20 different drivers, three overnights and a lot of stops for Jake," Metz laughed.Metz's sister is a transport coordinator for rescued animals. She used the power of Facebook to put out the call for help and arranged for his return.From Tennessee to Arkansas to Oklahoma to Texas and New Mexico, over the past three days, the volunteers took photos along the way. And then Monday afternoon, Jake was reunited with his owner in Holbrook. Click on the map below to follow the route the volunteers took to bring Jake home.Now Jake is back where he belongs and thanks to a lot of volunteers, pretty well-traveled.Metz said Companion Animal Hospital in Roaring Spring kept Jake from when he was found until he left for his trip home on Friday.
