SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new program in San Diego County aims to keep elementary school children from falling behind during the summer months.Created by United Way of San Diego County, "Readers in the Heights" Literacy Summer Camp is a free program for families.Advocates say students who aren't reading at grade level by third grade are four times more likely not to graduate high school."This is indicative of how well they will do throughout high school, how much their earning potential will be as they mature into adults," said Ian Gordon, Chief Impact Officer. "This is really ground zero, if you will, for ensuring they do excel throughout life."In its third year now, the Readers in the Heights went from serving 40 children to now over 300. 758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local businessman is now accused in a child porn case, several years after he managed to get off the sex offender registry.Along Tokalon Street in Bay Park, there is a sense of disbelief. A neighbor of some 7 years - Joseph Welsh - arrested in Fontana over the weekend.Police say parents confronted him and took his phone after he took photos of girls in bathing suits at a birthday party.Search warrants executed at his home and his business - a Segway rental outlet on Mission Boulevard - netted several electronic devices containing child porn, according to investigators.The neighbors' sense of shock was magnified because of what they didn't know about his past: a conviction in the 1990s in San Bernardino county for possessing child porn, and annoyance of a child.Police say in 2014, the courts deemed him not a danger to the public and removed him from the registry.It's a maneuver many can't understand.An acquaintance of Welsh, 47, told 10News those who worked near him became "creeped out" because he was always photographing surf schools and flying drones on the beach.In one instance, concerns led to an acquaintance to warn a teenager who knew Welsh to stay away from him.To search the California Megan's Law website for registry results, click here. 1308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A recently transformed motel in the Egger Highlands community is now housing homeless families during the pandemic.The city started plans to transform a former Super 8 motel into transitional housing to help people in a drug and alcohol diversion program, called S.M.A.R.T.However, the city officials say the pandemic created a more significant need to house homeless families. The Convention Center was turned into a temporary shelter during the pandemic, housing individuals from the city's bridge shelters. However, the environment was not appropriate for families, said Ashley Bailey, press secretary for Mayor Kevin Faulconer."The transitional housing facility here on Palm Avenue was finishing construction in May, so we identified it as a potential area to expand and offer more space for families," Bailey said. "Having this facility gives families and children a place to come in, be safe, be sanitary, and get connected to services so they can get on to a better life."Erikssa Martinez recently moved into the facility with her husband and three kids."It's set up like a big hotel room, its really nice, my kids are happy to be here," she said.Martinez says the Alpha Project helped get into the facility. They had been homeless since December and had been staying with relatives, or in motels. She says she and her husband have slept in their cars on some nights, after dropping off their kids with family members."We've been looking forward to is having some kind of stability, where we're not stuck in our car for hours waiting where we're going to have to a place to stay at," Martinez said.They also have access to more services, and Martinez hopes that her will be able to get into permanent housing soon.The city plans to still use the transformed motel as transitional housing for S.M.A.R.T. when the property is no longer needed to shelter homeless families during the pandemic. 1924

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry.
