SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was sentenced to nearly a decade in state prison Wednesday for his role in the fatal shooting of a Navy sailor who pulled over on a San Diego freeway ramp to help a seemingly stranded motorist.Harvey Liberato, 26, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges stemming from the Oct. 27, 2018 slaying of 21-year-old Curtis Adams on the connector ramp between southbound state Route 15 and northbound Interstate 5.Adams was driving on the freeway with his girlfriend at around 2 a.m. when he stopped to assist a disabled vehicle on the side of the freeway, which was actually a car that had sustained flat tires in a shootout from a bungled vehicle burglary earlier that night.RELATED: Man found guilty of murder in slaying of Navy sailor on freewayThe disabled car was occupied by Liberato, Susana Galvan, 40; Brandon Acuna, 23; and Brandon's brother, Edson Acuna, 26.Believing Adams was the person they had engaged in a shootout with earlier in the night, Edson Acuna exited the car and shot Adams in the chest.Edson was convicted by a jury earlier this year of first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, various firearm counts and a special-circumstance allegation of committing the murder in the commission of a burglary. He's slated to be sentenced next month to life in prison without the possibility of parole.Brandon Acuna pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and awaits sentencing next month, while Galvan pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and was sentenced last year to three years in county jail.RELATED COVERAGE:Closing arguments in trial for man accused of killing Navy sailor on freewayGunman kills good Samaritan in I-15 shooting near Mountain ViewLiberato was sentenced Wednesday to nine years and eight months in state prison.Prosecutors say the defendants took part in burglarizing a vehicle parked outside a Mount Hope home earlier that night and got into a shootout with one of the home's residents, resulting in at least one of the tires on Acuna's car being shot out.Forced to pull over due to the flat tire, Acuna and the others saw Adams stop on the side of the freeway. As he stopped to assist, Adams told his girlfriend, "I'm going to be a Good Samaritan today," Deputy District Attorney Melissa Vasel said at Edson Acuna's trial.RELATED COVERAGE:Suspect in shooting of Navy sailor on freeway has criminal historyMurder suspect's brother arrested in Mexico, charged with Good Samaritan's deathAcuna shot Adams as the Navy man stepped out of his vehicle, a killing the prosecutor described as "nothing less than an execution."Acuna's vehicle was found on the freeway about a half-mile from the shooting scene, with Brandon Acuna and Galvan arrested nearby.Liberato was arrested about a week later, while Edson Acuna was arrested that December in Mexico.Adams, a Brooklyn native, enlisted in the Navy in 2016. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As his trial entered its eighth week, a man who shot at officers from his ex-girlfriend's condominium in Bankers Hill pleaded guilty to four counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and agreed to a 20-year prison sentence, it was confirmed Thursday.Titus Colbert, 36, faces formal sentencing May 18 before Judge Louis Hanoian.Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon was about to wrap up his case when Colbert decided to plead guilty Monday afternoon.Charges of premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer and assault with a semiautomatic weapon were dismissed.RELATED: Suspect in Bankers Hill standoff that shut down Lindbergh Field in courtRunyon said in his opening statement that Colbert took two rifles and a revolver belonging to his roommate in Las Vegas and showed up at his former girlfriend's condo in Bankers Hill a few days before his Nov. 4, 2015, arrest.According to Runyon, the morning of the shooting, Colbert's ex- girlfriend Ashley Davies realized that he'd had broken into her complex and sent him a text saying: "You're trespassing! You're going to jail!"Colbert responded by texting, "(Expletive), I'm going to be a star. (Expletive) you for putting my life in danger," the prosecutor said. When officers responded to Davies' sixth-floor condo near the roof of the complex, a shot rang out from behind her door and an officer returned fire, according to Runyon. The prosecutor said officers retreated and more shots were fired at them and members of a SWAT team.Hours later, police observed a rifle, revolver and a magazine for a rifle being thrown out of the window where Colbert was holed up, Runyon said. After Colbert's arrest, officers found 17 expended casings and another rifle under a pile of clothes in the room, the prosecutor said.Even though traces of cocaine and methamphetamine were found in Colbert's system, and even though he had a history of mental health issues, the defendant knew what he was doing that day, Runyon said.Defense attorney Melissa Tralla told the jury that Colbert had a psychotic break and was paranoid and delusional. She said that days before, Colbert had called Davies at least 50 times and was not acting right.Colbert was rambling, saying he had special powers and was part of the New World Order, Tralla said. The attorney said Colbert was showing signs of mental illness by age 6, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia by age 15. Tralla told the jury that Colbert did not intend or plan to kill officers that day. 2518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Wednesday they received reports of the county's third person to die of flu-related causes since the 2019-20 flu season began. The 80-year-old north county man died Nov. 1, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He had received this season's flu vaccine prior to his death and had additional medical conditions. Health officials received reports of this flu season's first death in August. The county also confirmed 58 flu cases last week, nearly double the 30 confirmed cases from the previous week. County health officials have already confirmed 420 flu cases this season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. At this time last flu season, officials had confirmed only 157 cases. RELATED: Health officials stress getting vaccinated for the flu ASAP``The higher number of cases is an indication that influenza activity is increasing in the region,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. ``If you have not gotten a flu shot, do it now. The vaccine is here and readily available.'' County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone six months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications like pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like lung disease and people age 65 or older. Residents can take precaution against contracting the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people. Residents can also get the flu vaccine at local doctors' offices, retail pharmacies and the county's public health centers. RELATED: Vaccine exemption rates among US kindergartners continue to climb, CDC saysA full list of locations offering flu shots can be found at the county's immunization website, sdiz.org, or by calling 211 for the county's health hotline. 1996
