SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman struck by a hit-and-run driver on a Logan Heights street suffered life-threatening injuries Friday, San Diego Police said. The crash happened about 11 a.m. in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Parkway at Kearney Avenue. A white Ford F-150 pickup truck was driving west and struck a woman also heading west on the north sidewalk, police said. The truck made a right turn onto Kearney Avenue and struck the woman. The driver did not stop to help the woman and continued north on Kearney Avenue, according to investigators. The 52-year-old victim suffered major head trauma. Police said the truck had a tinted back window and a white California sticker. Anyone with information can call the San Diego Police Department. 747

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present. He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester. While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said. While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A stylist in Bankers Hill says a "style-and-dash" customer stiffed him on a hefty bill for hair extensions.Stylist Wesley Horn says the young woman, a repeat customer, came into Plush Salon on Friday to match her hair for extensions. The next day, for several hours, he applied and blended the hair."They looked great. She loved it. She was raving about it," said Horn.Horn says when it came time to pay the cost of more than ,000, she offered to pay through the Venmo app."She said the app wasn't working, and then she offered to pay cash," said Horn. She told Horn she had to go to the car to get the cash."Fifteen minutes go by. I text her and ask, 'Are you close?' She says, 'Yes.' Forty minutes go by, and nothing. I call her, and I'm blocked from her cellphone," said Horn.Horn filed a police report, but because she hasn't been named a suspect in a crime, 10News is not identifying the woman. Horn posted details of the incident on the Nextdoor app. The replies included several more accusations of fraud against her, ranging from dine-and-dash incidents to credit card fraud and identity theft."It's insane. Don't know how she goes around feeling good about herself ... I spent a lot of time and effort to make sure she felt good about herself ... and she scammed us," said Horn.10News did try to contact the woman, but she hasn't returned our calls. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1461

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After more than two decades, legal street racing at Mission Valley's stadium site are coming to an end.Due to financial reasons, organizers have been forced the end the event after 21 years. Friday, thousands rolled into the stadium parking lot to see off Racelegal."What this shows me is the car culture has always been great in Southern California, this is showing the support and so much that the people want this to be here," said Peter Scalzo, the drag strip's owner. In an open letter on the organization's website, Executive Director Lydia DeNecochea said in part that she hopes San Diego will continue to fight preventable deaths due to illegal street racing."The 21 years of success is due to the support of San Diego’s infrastructure and the community of San Diego standing together to stop the predictable and preventable tragic loss of young lives due to an illegal street racing crash," DeNecochea said. "My hope is that San Diego does not lose the knowledge of how to combat the tragedy of preventable deaths as a result of illegal street racing."Organizers say Racelegal's success was also helped in large part by assistance from the San Diego Sheriff's Department, San Diego and Chula Vista Police Departments, City Council members, and the Mayor's Office. 1298
