In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a lot of animals in the Bahamas are left without owners to care for them and without homes to shelter in. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) sent a crew to the Bahamas, trying to find and save those animals that survived the Category 5 hurricane. Alex Johnson with IFAW spent days in the throes of Dorian’s aftermath.“It was apocalyptic, catastrophic, whatever you want to call it,” he describes. “It was, it was just, it was just devastating.”Johnson is part of a rescue team sent to Abaco to help stranded animals. “We have set up in Nassau a dispatch, a dispatch center, where people it's almost like a crisis hotline where we have someone getting calls from desperate pet owners looking for pets that were left behind,” he says. Johnson describes the visit as “eerie” as he walked through areas devastated by the storm.“You would just walk by these areas and just kind of get a whiff of like some foul stench,” Johnson describes.For the animals the group would find, they would classify them as being an urgent situation or not. Johnson describes a dog he encountered that needed urgent medical attention. However, soon after finding him, the dog passed away. “And that's just like the sad reality of how the situation is going,” he says.Johnson says he and his crew are trying to offer refuge. “People like me and my other teammates are there to kind of give these animals a fighting chance, because they're often forgotten and these type of situations,” Johnson says.The IFAW team says their top priority is getting animals out of the hardest-hit areas and reuniting the ones they can with their owners. INDIANAPOLIS — In her speech Friday night at the Young Democrats of America convention, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the past ideals and current policies of the Democratic Party.She praised the party’s history on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. “We are not a monolith, and we don’t want to be,” she said. But she also touted the diversity of the current House Democratic Caucus, which she said is 60% women, people of color and LGBT.“Our diversity is our strength,” she said. Pelosi then went into more detail about the party’s current efforts in Congress, starting with the recent passage of an increase of the federal minimum wage to per hour. Both Democratic representatives from Indiana voted in favor of the proposal, but it is very unlikely to pass the Senate. She discussed what other things House Democrats are working on in Congress, such as net neutrality, gun violence prevention and climate change. LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas woman is suing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after she claims she was forced to strip down and remove a "feminine hygiene product" at a Tulsa, Oklahoma airport.According to the complaint, the woman — who has a metal hip implant — was boarding a flight through TSA pre-check through Tulsa International Airport on Mother's Day. Knowing her hip implant would set off a metal detector, she asked to be screened with a body scanner.After she went through the body scanner, TSA agents informed the woman that she would need to submit to a pat down, which the woman agreed to.During the pat down, the agent discovered a "common feminine hygiene product" that she was wearing under her clothes. She was also told that she would need to be escorted to a private room in order to be "cleared."Once in the room, the woman was told to "clear the area" where she was wearing her feminine hygiene product. It's then that she claims TSA agents told her she would need to take down her pants and underwear.The woman initially objected, but later did remove her clothes after being told by agents that she was required to do so.The TSA never requires passengers to submit themselves to a strip search, according to a statement from the agency.After removing her clothes, the woman says she asked agents for permission to leave four times before she was allowed to leave the room..The woman says she is suffering severe emotional distress and says the search violated her rights.TSA and provided the following statement:"Due to pending litigation, we cannot comment on the specifics of this case. Jeff Marquise is taking small steps in distance, but he's making huge strides for science.Eight years ago, Marquise was paralyzed from a mountain biking accident.“It was a gap jump and I sort of just rolled over it and went over the handlebars on the other side of the jump and came down right on my head,” he recalls. “I sustained a C5 and C6 burst fracture.” Those injuries left Marquise unable to walk. Now, with the help of new technology and old-school physical training, he is leaving his wheelchair and walking again. “No one thought I could stand up on my own or step on my own,” he says. “So, being able to do it with the implant has brought some hope back to the equation.” The implant is an epidural stimulator that’s embedded near the spinal cord. Electricity then triggers the nervous system which can help restore brain-to-spine connectivity. Researchers at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville are calling this a scientific breakthrough.“It gives us hope that we know now that the spinal cord has this capability,” says Claudia Angeli, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville. “So, it’s a matter of being able to tap into that.”While Angeli is not calling this a quick fix for paralysis, she is finding excellent results.“You can actually see that activation of the muscles,” she says. “It’s the spinal cord responding to information. So, the more activity the more responsive or the more excitable the spinal cord is.”That excitement can be felt across the country.A recent study by the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation discovered that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis in the United States.That breaks down to about 5.4 million people, or the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.“It is life changing,” Marquise says. “But I’m always careful not to oversell it. It’s not walking around the house doing chores.”While being brutally honest, Marquise says he’s also very happy to get back on his feet again. “When you first get hurt, a lot of people are told that they are not going to be able to walk again,” he says. “So, being able to do it in this setting has brought a ray a hope for me and other people.” 2235

JCPenney announced it plans on closing 154 locations nationwide this summer, with additional closures expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The company has been hemorrhaging locations in recent years as shifts in consumer habits have led customers away from legacy retailers such as JCPenney. Stores closing due to the COVID-19 have hastened the demise for companies like JCPenney. The affected stores will begin store closing sales on June 12. It will take 10 to 16 weeks to close the 154 stores.The loss of 154 locations will reduce the company’s footprint down from 850 stores nationwide.
