SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Dean "The Boogeyman" Lister is asking the public to help him find a man he found inside his apartment. Lister, a Jiu Jitsu champion, has taken down opponents around the world - but he never expected a fight in his home. "I thought somebody was working in the apartment," he said, describing the man as covered in tattoos and wearing only a pair of boxers.Lister said the man wasn't making any sense, and soon Lister started to record him. In the video the man is heard saying that he went into the apartment because he thought it was a church. When the man realized that he was being record, Lister said he reached for a hammer - a moment that can be seen just before the video ends. Lister is a gun owner, and said he reached for his weapon when the stranger threatened him. At that point, the man got scared and Lister let him escape out the same window he broke in through. When police arrived, the man was gone. "I'm not trying to sound like any kind of saint," Lister said. "But whatever kind of money I lost, maybe it's not worth someone dying."Lister posted the video on Youtube and shared it with 10News in hopes that someone would recognize the intruder. "Hopefully he turns his life around," Lister said.   1327

Since then, things for small businesses like hers have been touch and loyal customers including high school juniors, Siya and Anoushka, wanted to help."A lot of businesses were closing. We both brainstormed about how we could help local businesses who have helped us in the past," said Anoushka." So they created a campaign called Loving the Locals. "We started a GoFund Me page and reached out to friends and family who were able to donate. With that money, we were able to donate to Mostra Coffee."And when Malone was ready to meet her donors she said, "I'm looking for adults, they didn't give me their names or tell me how much and I see these two young high school girls and they're like 'Are you Jelynn?'" To describe Malone as surprised was an understatement. "Then they hand over this large check to me and it says a thousand dollars and I'm completely shocked. I'm emotional, touched," Malone described. Malone's no stranger to giving back. A portion of her profits goes to farmers in the Phillippines, where she sources a lot of her product from. When the pandemic began, she donated gratitude boxes to frontline workers. All of her efforts never went unnoticed, even by young customers. "They [Mostra Coffee] continue to give back to community even during these difficult times and we felt that quality was important to us and it's what we were going for. We shared similar values and they were a great fit for us," Siya said. Mostra Coffee is the first business Loving the Locals has donated to. They have a GoFund Me and all profits will go to another small business once their goal is met. 1760

Karina Sanchez searches for the right words. "We can't even believe how great business has been, we're so so thankful for it."Sanchez and her husband are owners of Waterhorse Charters in Mission Bay. Opening just last year, they offer scuba diving tours, party cruises, fishing and whale watching excursions.When the pandemic hit, they were forced to temporarily shutdown by state mandate. But once given the green light to reopen, Sanchez says business has been booming, with people want to get out and do it safely."I feel like people get a little more comfortable going out in the water," says Sanchez, "Something that's outdoors; than having, for instance, a house party or just going to bars or something like that."Sanchez connects with many of her customers through the site GetMyBoat.Com, which is kind of like Airbnb for boats."There's some data that suggests the average boat is only used 8 to 10% of the year," says Val Streif, who represents GetMyBoat.com from their headquarters in Minneapolis. "And the other time it's just sitting in a dock or marina."Streif says GetMyBoat has listings from private boat owners and charter services in 184 countries around the world, offering everything from kayaks and jet skis to pontoon boats and yachts."This is a way for people to earn some supplemental income," says Strief, "When they're not using the boat for themselves for personal purposes."There are increased regulations during the pandemic -- stepped up cleaning, fewer passengers for social distancing and other steps depending on the boat or excursion offered."We require everybody to wear a mask while they're on board," says Sanchez, "When they rent a regulator -- which is the piece you put in your mouth when you're diving -- every time people rent one from us we make them buy the mouthpiece."Sanchez says the changes aren't hurting business, as they've been sold out. And they're not the only ones, which is why GetMyBoat.com looking for more boat owners to sign up and perhaps help themselves "stay afloat" during these tough times, by renting out their boat.Sanchez says the demand is definitely there."Everybody is just grateful they can go out on the water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves.In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara.The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. I don't want this to happen to any other families," said Barbara.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1675

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. The only confirmation so far is that the two low-income units on the property are leased to San Diegans who qualified. 1947
