After months of being separated from her elderly mother due to COVID-19 visiting restrictions in nursing homes, MJ Ryan decided she had to find a way in. Her plan: get a job working in the laundry room of her mom's nursing home.Ryan is a senior director for a large healthcare company outside of Boston making six figures, but the minimum wage job allowed her to spend priceless hours with her 90-year-old mother, Theresa. Theresa had been suffering from Alzheimer's for the last few years and was recently moved to The Friendly Home in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.All across the country, seniors are suffering in isolation, as restrictions to keep them safe from COVID-19 are taking a serious toll on people’s mental health.“They’re dying of broken hearts. They’re dying of abandonment,” Ryan said about the current situation facing this nation’s elderly population.Through brief phone conversations, Ryan could tell that her mother’s condition was quickly deteriorating. Theresa survived getting COVID-19 earlier in the spring, but she was forgetting things more often and becoming disinterested in talking to her children or even getting dressed.“She wanted to get out of those walls, and I said we couldn’t because there’s a virus and I would explain to her what was going on. She says, ‘Well what’s the difference? This is a slow death,’” Ryan recalled of her conversation with her mother.Realizing she may not have time on her side, Ryan became determined to somehow see her mom. When she heard about a Florida woman who got a job working in her husband’s care facility, Ryan decided to try the same thing.After talking to the Friendly Home, she realized the facility had several open positions they needed to fill. Nursing homes across the country are currently facing severe staffing shortages. So, this healthcare professional took a job doing laundry in her mom’s facility.Ryan worked once a week on Thursday nights, an 8-hour shift that made her realize how important frontline workers in care facilities are.“Every one of those people work so hard and most of them work multiple jobs to keep food on the table,” she said. “Seeing it firsthand, it’s amazing.”On her dinner breaks and in between washing clothes, Ryan was able to spend time with her mom. It wasn’t much, but she could tell that even that small bit of time spent with her mom was enough to brighten her mood.“She didn’t have a lot of concept of time and space, and I just wanted her to know we weren’t gone. That her family was still there,” Ryan said about the experience.When Theresa passed away on Nov. 1 from Alzheimer's, Ryan was there.“Now, I live with the sadness of losing her, which everyone does at some point, but I don’t live with regret,” Ryan said about the loss of her mom.Ryan hopes others might be inspired by her story and do the same.“There’s so many things that go on in a nursing home that people could do that are necessary for the care of residents, that make you feel good about doing it, make you feel good about helping the residents and allow you in to see your family member,” she explained.Even though her mom has passed away, Ryan is remaining on-call to help whenever the nursing home is short-staffed.Instead of flowers at Theresa’s funeral service, people were asked to donate to an emergency fund the family started for frontline workers at the nursing home. 3373

A week ago, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on behalf of the Trump administration that talks of direct payments to Americans were dead as part of another round of economic stimulus.But now, it appears, there is some backtracking as Congress and the White House work to come to some agreement over the details of another round of stimulus.According to the Associated Press, Mnuchin has reached out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proposing 0 direct payments to Americans as part of the stimulus package. The amount is half of what was given to most Americans during the spring in the wake of mass economic shutdowns tied to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.Last week, both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden offered their support of a 0 billion stimulus plan hatched between a bipartisan group of moderate senators. Trump said last week he would sign the bill if it passes through Congress. However for Americans hoping to see a second stimulus check, this bill comes short on that aspect.The bill would provide 0 in additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program and for small businesses to help make payroll as a number of companies are being forced to close to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. The current proposal calls for 8 billion to go toward support for small businesses.There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. There is in additional billion allocated toward the transportation industry, most notably for airlines, which have seen an over 50% reduction in business since March.While Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week that a compromise is within reach, he said Tuesday that he opposes funds for state and local governments. He proposed Tuesday dropping funds for state and local governments in exchange for dropping litigation protection against businesses. Democrats have opposed pandemic-related litigation protection for businesses.“My view and I think it’s the view shared by literally everybody on both sides of the aisle, we can’t leave without doing a COVID bill,” McConnell said earlier in the day. “The country needs it. We have an agreement that we need to do this. After dozens of puppies were found in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa with no food and water before being rescued Sunday, authorities ramped up their investigation into Young Gunz Kennel.They obtained a search warrant and confiscated items for several hours Tuesday.Sheriff deputies and animal control personnel hauled away a large number of kennels that were at the unlicensed facility, which was used for obedience and hunting training, as well as dog breeding. Investigators could also be seen snapping photos and collecting additional evidence that they could find at the site, which housed as many as 50 dogs before many of them were found inside their kennels severely malnourished. A total of four dogs have now been found dead, and 10 are missing.Copper was one of the dogs that was rescued on Sunday. When his owner Wil Beach picked him up, Copper had lost 20 pounds and was covered in feces. "He was very scared but still in high spirits, he was the same dog emotionally when I got him (back) than when I dropped him off,” says Beach.Beach says he took Copper and a 0 check to owner Dustin Young in January after high praises from friends. Aldon Smith, who was the NFC's Defensive Player of the Year, has a warrant out for his arrest on Monday after a possible domestic incident from the weekend, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Smith is wanted on charges of misdemeanor domestic violence, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism, the Chronicle reported. Earlier the in the day, the Oakland Raiders released Smith. The incident in question was reportedly Saturday evening, and the victim identified Smith as the suspect. TMZ reported that Smith checked into a rehab facility on Monday. Smith has had frequent encounters with law enforcement. The Chronicle reported that Smith has three previous DUI arrests. Akash Vukoti, speller 459, from Texas, was the youngest speller in the competition the first time he came to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, at six years old.Akash turns nine Tuesday, on the first day of competition. He's still among the youngest competitors, but the third grader is now a seasoned pro."It feels amazing to be back," he said, "Being in the National Spelling Bee itself is such an honor."Akash said he thinks the competition will be tougher this year -- after all, there are more competitors -- but that the actual spelling is his favorite part of being there.
