Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said in an MSNBC interview late Thursday that she is no longer interested in being Joe Biden’s running mate in this fall’s presidential election.Klobuchar was considered among the favorites to be pegged as Biden’s running mate. Biden, who previously said he would likely choose a woman as his running mate, has received pressure to choose a minority to be his running mate in the weeks since the death of George Floyd.With Klobuchar’s past as a prosecutor, and given Floyd was killed by officers in Klobuchar’s home state, many pundits believed her viability as a running mate dropped.“After what I have seen in my state, what I have seen across the country, this is a historic moment,” Klobuchar said. “America must seize on this moment and I truly believe, as I told the vice president last night, I think this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket."According to an Associated Press report last week, Sen. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) --  A man is in the hospital tonight after trying to save his dogs in an apartment fire. The Santee Villas Apartments were roaring in flames Thursday night. One of the residents headed directly into the danger zone trying to save his two chihuahua. Melanie Jaracz watched in horror as her neighbor risked his life climbing through a window."They busted out the windows to that," said Jaracz. "He tried climbing through that and they kept dragging him back. Nobody could get him to come out because he was so worried about his animals."Santee fire crews say it started in a bottom unit and quickly spread to three others around it. First responders tried to revive one of the dogs but it was too late. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  887

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California has accepted a record number of freshmen and transfer students that includes the most ever from California for the 2019-20 academic year.The university system said Monday its nine undergraduate campuses accepted 71,655 California freshmen and 26,700 students who will transfer from California community colleges. That's more than 3,200 California students than last year.UC schools have been under pressure to accept California residents so they can have a cheaper way to complete a four-year degree at the state's top public universities.Nearly 218,000 prospective undergraduates applied for at least one UC school for fall 2019 during the application period that ended Nov. 30, according to figures released by the university system. SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A 68-year-old man was struck by an SUV and killed crossing a street outside of a crosswalk in San Ysidro, police said this morning.The accident occurred near a Shell gas station in the 300 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard near Border Village Road about 9:25 p.m. Friday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 45-year-old woman driving a 2016 Dodge Journey made a left turn out of the gas station parking lot onto East San Ysidro Boulevard at the same time the man attempted to cross from the south side of the street to the north side, Heims said.The man was struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.Alcohol was not considered a factor in the crash and the person at fault was yet to be determined, Heims said.Anyone with information on this deadly crash was asked to call Traffic Division investigators at 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 960
