SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four men allegedly bringing several dozen pounds of drugs through the coastal North County were arrested today following a road chase from Solana Beach to Carlsbad, authorities said.The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m., when detectives tried to pull over a vehicle with five people in it on Interstate 5 near Lomas Santa Fe Drive, according to sheriff's officials.The driver refused to yield, continuing on to the north for about four miles before exiting onto Encinitas Boulevard, Sgt. Bill Kerr said.There, one of the passengers, 24-year-old Gabriel Albert Delosreyes, got out of the vehicle and allegedly made a futile attempt to escape on foot.As deputies chased down Delosreyes, the fleeing driver -- later identified as Juan Manuel Villalobos, 28 -- got back onto I-5 and went north for several more miles, then exited at La Costa Avenue and headed east along the southern shoreline of Batiquitos Lagoon, Kerr said.Reaching a residential area off Levante Street and Caminito Monarca, just east of El Camino Real, Villalobos pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off with his remaining companions.One of the four, an unidentified woman, managed to escape, but deputies quickly captured Villalobos along with cohorts Marcos Martinez, 34, and 26-year-old Eddie Anthony Navarro.Inside the trunk of the car Villalobos had been driving, deputies found a truck tire with 25 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine stashed inside it, according to Kerr."Small amounts of other drugs were also found on the suspects,'' the sergeant said.The arrestees were expected to face various criminal charges, including possession of an illicit narcotic for sale, illegal transportation of a controlled substance and conspiracy. 1736

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist last month in the Midtown area was arrested in a shopping center parking lot in Kern County, it was reported Wednesday.San Diego police identified the suspected driver last week as Mauricio Flores and also released the name of a woman, Jessica Bailey, suspected of riding in the van with Flores.The pair were in a 2005 Dodge Caravan with Georgia license places that struck a bicyclist around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 on West Washington Street at India Street in the Midtown area, police said.RELATED: Bicyclist sustains life-threatening injury in hit-and-runThe victim suffered a life-threatening head injury and remains in the hospital, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.In video shot by a witness and released by San Diego police, the driver could be seen stopping after the collision and getting out of the van.The video then showed the driver and passenger going to the injured man on the side of the road before the driver tugs the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and sets it aside. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in broad daylight on a Mission Beach street pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of assault with intent to commit a sex crime. Philemon Shark, 40, who has two prior convictions from Washington state for residential burglary from 2014 and 2015, faces life in prison if convicted, said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador. Judge Joseph Brannigan set Shark's bail at million and ordered the defendant to have no contact with the alleged victim. Amador said all sexual assaults -- no matter what level -- are ``serious'' and taken ``exceptionally serious'' by the District Attorney's Office. ``I think part of the concern is that when an individual is attacked in broad daylight in an area where they felt safe or did not feel a threat, of course that's added concern, but our office takes all sexual assaults equally as serious,'' the prosecutor said outside court. The attack happened about 8:40 a.m. last Sunday on Bayside Lane near San Jose Lane, just off Mission Boulevard, according to San Diego Police Lt. Jason Weeden. Weeden said the victim was walking south when Shark allegedly approached her from behind, threw her to the ground and held her down while he assaulted her. The woman screamed for help, and several residents forced the man off her, the lieutenant said. When Shark tried to leave, some of the residents followed him but lost track of him, Weeden said. Then, about 45 minutes after the attack, one of the neighbors found Shark hiding in a breezeway. Shark allegedly fled but was apprehended by patrol officers and booked into jail. Weeden said Shark is from the Seattle area and was believed to have been living in San Diego for the last few months.
