A Michigan hospital is facing a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by a nurse who says she was told not to care for a patient because of her race.Teoka Williams works as a Registered Nurse at Beaumont Health's campus in Dearborn. Her lawsuit alleges that while working on the unit on Oct. 2, she overheard a patient say she did not want a "Black B****" taking care of her.Williams claims she told the clinical manager about the comment and that clinical manager then talked to the patient, who told her she did not want Williams to care for her.The clinical manager then allegedly told the patient that she would "move" Williams and that the patient would not have to see her anymore. The clinical manager then told Williams she was not to go into the patient's room and if either patient in the room needed care a white nurse named Olivia was required to go into the room, according to the suitThe lawsuit alleges that there were times when the patients in the room needed care and Williams was forbidden from doing so because of her race.Williams' lawsuit contends that she told Human Resources about the incident and was told that patient requests are honored all the time and that the next time it happened, she would be taken off the assignment altogether. The lawsuit contends Beaumont violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. It is asking for compensatory and punitive damages, as well as court costs and attorney fees, as well as any other relief that Williams may be entitled under the law.Beaumont Health issued the following statement: 1647

A University of Utah track athlete was shot dead on the campus Monday night by a man she reportedly had dated and complained to police about, authorities said.University police found Lauren McCluskey's body in the back seat of a car on campus after her worried mother called police, according to university Police Chief Dale Brophy. McCluskey, 21, apparently had a dispute with the man, identified as Melvin Rowland, 37, university Police Lt. Brian Wahlin said. The shooting led police to lock down the campus for hours while they searched for the suspect. Brophy said someone picked the suspect up from campus after the shooting.Early Tuesday, Salt Lake City Police saw Rowland in downtown Salt Lake City and briefly chased him, Brophy said. Brown said Rowland slipped in to the back door of a church, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot."This isn't right," Mark Harlan, the school's athletic director, said Tuesday of the death of McCluskey, a Pullman, Washington, native. 1005

A plan to raise San Diego's hotel tax to expand the convention center appears to be headed to the March 2020 ballot. The City Council voted 5-4 Monday to formalize its intention to place the tourist tax hike on next year's primary election. The measure, called "Yes! For a better San Diego," would raise the transient occupancy tax by as much as 3.25 percent per night, depending on location. Hotels closest to the heart of the city would see the tax rate increase the most. The revenue would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and road repair. The council was split on its decision because voters passed Measure L in 2016. Measure L called for citizens initiatives to be placed on November general elections, when turnout is highest. However, the measure gave the City Council the option to move votes to different elections if it sees fit. It is still unclear whether the measure needs a simple majority or two-thirds support. The City Council is expected to formally place the tourist tax increase on the March ballot when it calls for the election in the fall. 1092

A Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2017, former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner revealed he thought about making a return to the NFL in 2018.During a baseball game in St. Louis on Monday, the 46-year-old Warner said he reached out to a team about possibly returning for the 2018 season, a good eight-plus years after his most recent NFL appearance."I was actually ready to (return) for this coming season," Warner said. "I actually talked to a coach, and my wife said, 'Go for it, I think it would be great.' So, I actually talked to a coach about possibly doing it if they needed someone, but they went out and signed somebody. I don't think they thought I was serious."  700
