(KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon.In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears.She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer.She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger.She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger.It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened. Friends and strangers lent and donated her everything she needed, including a bike rental for the day."Don't have the words to describe the gratitude in my heart ... and I will be at that start line Sunday!" said Sterger.Sterger says neighbors saw a large group of teenage boys walking out of the home carrying stuff that night. Deputies say one of the boys has been arrested. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two men were arrested Monday after the San Diego Sheriff’s Department says they reportedly beat a man with a metal pipe in Lemon Grove. Deputies say they received a call about a man bleeding in the street around 10:43 a.m. Monday at the 7200 block of Pacific Avenue. After arriving, police found the 43-year-old mad lying on the sidewalk with a head wound. Witnesses told deputies four men in a light-blue vehicle chased the victim to the location and beat him with a “long stick, and a metal pipe.”After contacting a group of men associated with the vehicle, a 25-year-old man identified as Terrell Millard admitted to the assault. Deputies say he was booked into jail. A 15-year-old also admitted to the assault. Deputies say he was charged and released. 795

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A medical marijuana dispensary could be opening its doors just feet away from children in La Mesa.Last month, the La Mesa Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for New Origins Management, Inc. to open a medical marijuana dispensary, but the center says they were never contacted about it.  One woman who has a teen at the San Diego Center for Children called the pot shop counterproductive to what parents and the clinic are trying to accomplish. The nonprofit helps young people with mental and behavioral issues.The La Mesa Medical Plaza is a pretty peaceful place, but the San Diego Center for Children is worried about its future neighbor. The clinic says you can draw direct line from their front door to the front door of the proposed medical marijuana dispensary."Our concern is having our youth that close to a medical marijuana dispensary," said Dr. Cheryl Rode, VP of Clinical Operations for the Center.The clinic occupies Suites J and K but a medical marijuana dispensary could be moving into Suite C.  The offices share a walkway and parking lot."Literally, our clients and their clients would be interacting pretty regularly," Dr. Rode said.In November 2016, La Mesa voters passed Measure U, prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries from opening within 1,000 feet of a minor-oriented facility.It's defined as any after-school program, teen center, club for boys and/or girls, children's theater, or children's museum, where the primary use is for people under the age of 18.  The Center argues it qualifies as an after-school program."We feel that we clearly meet the criteria for a minor-oriented facility and that our facility was overlooked," Dr. Rode said.But the city disagrees.  They tell 10News because voters approved measure U, they don't have the ability to interpret the law or intent outside of its plain language, which does not include mental health and therapeutic services.  Director of Community Development Kerry Kusiak city sent us a statement that reads in part: 2136

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked!  Because that video itself has over a million views.  And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added.But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. There are many other ways to empower women versus just talking about how you can be sexy."Long-time Trustee Carolyn Edwards, who's terming out of the spot Ford is running for, says trustees must live up to a higher standard and that includes social media.Regarding her "How to Be Sexy" video, Danielle told us, "I wouldn't make that video--based on what I've heard--again, but I'm also not going to take it down."In fact, she's got a link to her Young Moms Club videos on her candidate website.
