BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented".     "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing.     He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties.     China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung-soo (R) receives interview by a journalist from Xinhua News Agency in Beijing, capital of China, June 12, 2009.     "We can see profound changes take place in almost all the fields of bilateral cooperation since then, especially in trade and economy, culture, education and youth exchange," Han said.     He also recalled President Lee's visit last May to Dujiangyan, a city in Sichuan Province severely damaged by an 8.0-magnitude quake.     "The ROK people were so concerned and feel deep sympathy about those who lost theirs lives or families in the disaster," Han said.     He told Xinhua that the schoolboy Wei Yuehao who was held in the arms by President Lee during his visit to the quake zone was invited last month to the Cheong Wa DAE, the ROK presidential office "as a commemoration".     Han said the ROK was severely hit by the financial turmoil and the ROK government, in a bid for the economic recovery, has come up with policies to stimulate domestic demand, step up financial investment and expand employment opportunity, which had worked.     Han said China was the biggest trade partner and exporting market to the ROK, and he expressed his appreciation for the measures that China adopted to curb the effects of the financial crisis, noting that it would be a "win-win" solution if the two nations could work together to tackle the crisis.     The prime minister also called on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to abandon its nuclear test scheme and return to the six-party talks to address the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula at an early date.     On May 25, the DPRK announced it has "successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test," which Pyongyang said has demonstrated its "defensive nuclear deterrent." After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles.     "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role.     Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the ruling United Russia Party met Tuesday to exchange views on the international financial crisis.     "This is the first official and high-level dialogue between the Chinese and Russian ruling parties," said Wang Jiarui, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee of his meeting with United Russia Party's council presidium secretary Vyacheslav Volodin.     Wang and Volodin signed an agreement on party-to-party cooperation on later Tuesday. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping attended the signing ceremony.     Xi hailed the Sino-Russian relationship when meeting with Volodin before the ceremony, saying that China would work with Russia to promote stable and healthy growth of the ties, in a bid to benefit the two nations and peoples. VIENNA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Austrian President Heinz Fischer met here Friday afternoon, agreeing to further expand cooperation on bilateral and international issues in face of the global financial storm.     Wu arrived in Vienna Friday morning for an official goodwill visit to Austria. He is the first Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) who visited Austria in the past 15 years. This stance will never change under any circumstances.     Wu appreciated Fischer's statement and reiterated China's principled stance on the Tibet issue.     On China-EU relations, Wu said both sides should firmly support each other's development by joining hands to address global challenges, including financial crisis and climate changes. MILAN, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in the Italian city of Milan on Monday for an official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), began his tour in Italy at the invitation of Italian Senate President Renato Schifani and Chamber of Deputies President Gianfranco Fini.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu said China is ready to work with Italy to maintain the sound momentum of practical cooperation so as to make contributions to overcoming the international financial crisis and spurring the recovery of the world economy. Wu Bangguo (R Front), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, arrives in Milan on May 18, 2009 at the start of an official goodwill visit to Italy    Wu is scheduled to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as heads of both houses of the Italian parliament and other Italian leaders to exchange views on bilateral relations and other regional and international issues of common concern.     Wu is also to visit a research and development center of the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), which shows China's interest in using European technologies to improve energy efficiency of its economy.     After Chinese President Hu Jintao's attendance at the London G20 summit in April and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe tour in January, Wu is yet another senior Chinese leader to visit Europe in the past few months.     Against the background of the worsening global financial crisis, Wu's visit highlighted the importance that China attaches to cooperation with Europe in addressing global challenges.     Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G8 group, will host a summit between the leaders of G8 nations and developing countries in June. Hu is expected to attend the meeting.     Wu's visit coincides with a G8 environment ministers meeting that is to be held in Italy on May 22.     China and Italy have witnessed smooth development of bilateral ties in recent years. Berlusconi visited Beijing for the Asia-Europe summit last October.     Besides Milan, Wu is also to visit Rome, Florence and Venice. Italy is the final leg of Wu's three-nation Europe tour, which had already taken him to Russia and Austria. 

NAIROBI, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Kenya and China vowed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on Monday during a meeting between senior officials of the two friendly countries.     Wang Jiarui, visiting minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s Central Committee, said the Chinese ruling party would engage Kenya's political parties --the Orange Democratic Party-Kenya, the Party of National Unity and the Orange Democratic Party in support of the stability of the Kenyan Grand Coalition Government.     Wang said his country valued the eastern African nation as an important partner in the continent.     "Our bilateral relation is very cordial as this has been demonstrated by sincere trust and mutual cooperation between the two countries. We also expect to explore inter-party cooperation to enable the two countries exchange views and address issues of mutual interest," Wang said in talks with Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.     He said the Sino-Kenyan friendship dates back to ancient times and that the past four decades of bilateral diplomatic ties have witnessed great development of friendship and successful cooperation in such fields as politics, infrastructure and trade, as well as mutual support in international affairs.     "We will work with the three parties that form the ruling coalition government. We know that these three parties are key to the stability of this country. Without stability there can be no development," he said.     Musyoka expressed thanks for China's assistance for Kenya in the past years and introduced Kenya's efforts to push forward regional peace, stability and integration.     Musyoka said Kenyan political parties have a lot to learn from CPC in spurning economic growth.     "I am aware that China's booming economy is largely inspired by the effective management of the CPC of the country's economic affairs," he noted.     The vice president said Kenya and China will work together to find ways of resolving the challenges facing their citizens.     He also thanked China for refurbishing the road linking the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the UN headquarters in Nairobi and the construction of stadia in Kenya.     "Today China is constructing various roads across the country including the one from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the United Nations headquarters. China has also oil exploration companies and with all these, we hope to expand other areas of cooperation and reach mutual understanding to enable both sides to benefit," he said.     Musyoka told Wang the east African nation appreciates the huge investment China has put into Kenya's infrastructure.     He expressed hope that more Chinese tourists will visit Kenya as part of efforts to balance trade, while urging China to launch direct flights to Nairobi to help spur economic growth and boost the country's tourism.     Musyoka pledged that the Kenyan coalition government attaches much importance to bilateral relations with China and will further strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields.
