SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said. The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. Smith also advises staying home if you can."The more it's circulating in the community, means the more risk there is for even those who are doing "the right thing" to still get it," he said.Smith said the light at the end of the tunnel is coming."We're also better at treating it than we were back in April, May, June, July. We're also doing better about having some treatments that can keep people out of the hospital," he said.A vaccine is also on it's way, planned to be administered in the coming weeks to front line workers. 1911

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A strong 5.5-magnitude jolt rocked Baja California Friday night, but the earthquake was felt as far north as Oceanside, according to United States Geological Survey data.Friday's tremor happened at 7:52 p.m. and was centered 2.3 miles southeast of Colonia Venustiano Carranza in the town of Mexicali -- about 150 miles east of San Diego, according to the USGS.Various people reported feeling the quake all over Southern California, including numerous locations in San Diego, Imperial County, and Arizona.RELATED: Experts: 6.9-magnitude Rose Canyon Fault earthquake could devastate San DiegoWe posted the story on Facebook and asked ABC 10News viewers if they felt the shake and the response was mixed."Yes we felt it in Bankers Hill. We’re on the top floor (4th) of a condo building! Unfortunately we feel most of this stronger earthquakes!," said Karen Silberman Tomasello."Yes, checking in from Harbison Canyon East County. Very scary," said Betsy Elizabeth Oliver-Uribe."Yep! In Eastlake (Chula Vista) rattled my kitchen cabinets! And that’s why my cat was acting psycho beforehand," said Annie Sevier Spackman."Nope didn’t feel a thing in Spring Valley!," said Julie McMillan. There have been no reports of injuries or damage at this time. 1269

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Encinitas family on vacation woke up to a disturbing alert last week, video of someone stealing multiple packages from their porch.Homeowner Mark Sandorf says the most peculiar thing was who the thief was."It’s different in that she looks like she’s probably someone’s grandma," said Sandorf. The family immediately filed a police report from New Mexico.10News blurred the woman's face because the San Diego Sheriff's Department has not yet said she's a wanted suspect. One of the packages had sentimental value, three custom holsters for Sandorf's son who is in law enforcement."My son is, like I said, risking his life out there every day and we try to keep him in good equipment and what not. These were custom made by a friend of mine in South Carolina," said Sandorf.Sandorf says the most frustrating thing is knowing the holsters will likely get thrown away.He hopes others in his Encinitas Ranch neighborhood will be on alert after the incident. 980

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? Then they say, that's too many," said Rodriguez. Tuesday the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to set up a million dollar trust fund for the county to use to invest in affordable housing. The vote followed a brief presentation by staff detailing the housing-related hurdles in the San Diego region, including that more than 3,500 affordable units have been lost in the last 20 years. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An explosion of COVID-19 cases across California has many businesses once again changing how they operate. But not by choice. The changes come after most counties find themselves in the state's most restrictive purple tier.San Diego County's move to the purple tier means back to takeout and outdoor only dining."I see red … Not in the black right now," says Terryl Gavre, owner of Café 222 in San Diego. "I've been here 29 years, this restaurant opened in 1992 … and I am doing less in sales than I was doing in 1992."Gavre's other spot, Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, is in what she describes as a hibernation period. Hunkering down and trying not to lose money. Those business decisions come with a cost."If we stay open, every month you watch the savings account go down, down, down," Gavre said. "We had 15 employees here pre-COVID we're now down to 5. So 10 of my staff members have been laid off. At Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, we had 40 people on staff."This week, 28 other California counties across the states moved back into the purple tier."My first thought was that's very frustrating. My second thought was immediately what I've been doing for the last eight months which is lying in bed awake thinking how are we going to pull this off," said Ryan Joiner, who owns Athlon Fitness & Performance in San Luis Obispo. The rules say fitness facilities located in purple tier counties can only operate outdoors. While some businesses have spent the last nine months treading water, the most recent frustration comes with the governor's Monday press conference and changes to the tier system, allowing counties to move back a tier after one week, not two.It drastically changed the makeup of the state and how many businesses across the state can operate."Counties can move back after one week, not just two weeks," Gov. Gavin Newsom said, describing the state hitting the emergency brake. "I'll go back so you can get a sense of where we were just a week ago and now again the purple throughout the state of California.""It's really frustrating for a lot of people and ya it does seem like he's moving toward a backdoor shut down order again," James Gallagher is a state assembly member in Northern California.Gallagher says the governor keeps changing the rules just as people are finding their footing from the last set of guidelines."I just think that this approach is the wrong one," Gallagher said.Gavre says the tighter the restrictions get and the longer they go on the harder for small businesses to keep going."A lot of people out of work right now going into the holidays and I don't know what they are going to do," Gavre said. The state has said the spread of COVID-19, if left unchecked, could quickly overwhelm our health care system and lead to catastrophic outcomes. 2824
