EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The pilot of a small plane made an emergency landing at a field and playground next to W. D. Hall Elementary School in El Cajon.The emergency landing happened around 4 p.m. Friday.The pilot says he took from Gillespie Field for a practice flight and was headed back to Gillespie for a landing when he ran out of fuel. He says his engine stopped, and he had to look for a place to land. He was able to glide onto the field safely.The plane hit a fence on the way down causing damage to a wing.The pilot says he has been flying for decades.No injuries were reported. 598

EL CAJON (CNS) - A resident at an East County independent-living facility was ordered Thursday to stand trial on a murder charge for allegedly killing a fellow resident by beating him in the face and head with a frying pan following an early morning argument.Brad Masaru Payton, 26, faces 26 years to life in state prison if convicted of the murder charge and an allegation of personally using a deadly weapon in the killing of Matthew McCarthy.Police said the violence at the transitional group home in the 1200 block of Naranca Avenue in El Cajon was reported shortly before 5 a.m. last Dec. 20. Patrol officers arrived to find a badly beaten McCarthy in a bedroom at the residence, said El Cajon Police Lt. Walt Miller.RELATED: Police called from home 78 times leading up to murder with frying panMedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Payton was arrested without incident.According to Miller, the victim and the defendant knew each other and lived in separate rooms. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a record number of people have cast their ballots early for the general election, but many will still head to the polls on Tuesday.If you plan on voting in person on Election Day, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and those around you from COVID-19.As cases spike around the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a list of tips for voters to reduce the spread of the coronavirus at the polls.The CDC says the more prepared you are, the more you reduce your risk of getting and spreading the virus.Bring your own suppliesThe CDC recommends bringing the following with you when you head to your polling place: Necessary documentation such as your ID, a mask and back-up mask, tissues, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, water, black ink pen, and any prepared items like registration forms or sample ballots.Wear a maskThe CDC says you should wear a mask consistently and correctly in public or if you’re around people who you don’t live with. If you must take your mask off, use hand sanitizer before and after. Having an extra mask is helpful if yours gets wet or dirty.Note: A few people might not be able to wear a mask, because of a disability or condition.Keep your distance from othersThe CDC suggests staying at least 6 feet from other people as much as you can. That’s about two arms’ lengths. You should stay that far apart even if you’re wearing masks.Clean your hands oftenThe CDC says to wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer before entering and after leaving your election site. Officials also suggest using a sanitizer after touching items that many others may have touched, such as door handles.The CDC says not to wipe down voting equipment yourself unless you are told to do so. Officials also say to make sure your hands are completely dry from sanitizer before touching the equipment.Protect yourself when using transportWhen using any kind of public transport, the CDC suggests wearing a mask, avoid touching things if you can and using sanitizer if you do, staying 6 feet apart from others, and open windows when possible.Avoid crowdsTo help avoid crowds, the CDC says you should try voting at non-peak times, such as mid-morning. (KGTV) -- Christian Unified Schools of San Diego welcomed junior and high school students back to campus on Tuesday.The El Cajon-based school district brought elementary school students back to school last week, and district officials said now it's time for the other grades to join.The school's website lists many of the precautions they're taking, including multiple temperature checks. Students will get their temperature checked before they are dropped off at school, and then again before entering the building.Everyone on campus must wear a mask or face shield, and students must wash or sanitize their hands before they enter each classroom.The district says social distancing will be observed in all classrooms.
