SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is spreading its message of turning faith into action this weekend. They'll host a convention to teach other congregations ways to incorporate community service into their regular programming."We have thousands of people on the street every day, doing something in our community," says Pastor Miles McPherson. "It’s a great testament to the hearts of the people in our church."Rock Church says its members have completed 2.4 million hours of community service over the last 10 years, with an estimated economic value of million."It’s one thing for people to sit in a room and listen to a sermon, it’s another thing for people to go out and do it," says McPherson. "That’s why we call it a "Do Something Church."Leaders from 73 congregations across 13 states will be at the Do Something Conference this weekend. In addition to educational sessions about how to establish community service programs, people at the conference will also take part in 10 service projects across San Diego. The conference is open to any faith-based organization that's looking to incorporate more community service.More information about the conference and registration can be found here. 1210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Lieutenant serving as the department's LGBT liaison has announced he is stepping down from the role. In an open letter posted to LGBTQ San Diego County News, Lt. Daniel Meyer explained why and how he made the decision to leave his position as the liaison. Lt. Meyer has been the liaison for 10 years. The news comes after San Diego Pride organizers sent a letter to the mayor announcing no law enforcement contingents would be allowed in the parade or festival, until policing changes are made, to show support for the Black LGBTQ community. The LGBT Community Center announced it would no longer allow armed, uniformed officers at its facilities and events. In his letter, Lt. Meyer says he found himself at a cross roads, proud of the work he's done to make SDPD a more inclusive and understanding agency. Meyer says he recognizes a need for change on a national level within community relations with law enforcement. Meyer continues, explaining that he cannot support the decisions because it "simply negates the amazing work done over decades."To read Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The six hours of impeachment debate pre-empted television programming across the country Wednesday. Throughout the day, both Democrats and Republicans repeated the same points over and over again. Political analysts say that’s only expected to continue. “The president used the power of his public office to obtain an improper personal political benefit at the expense of America's national security,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi kicked off the debate, summing up the argument to impeach President Donald Trump. RELATED: Rallies being held around San Diego County ahead of impeachment vote against TrumpRepublican Doug Collins of Georgia quickly fired back, calling a political rush job. “To the clock and calendar, facts don't matter. The promises to the base matter, and today is a promise kept for the majority,” Collins said. The speeches continued for hours, Democrats and Republicans each taking a minute or two to state their case. Very rarely did either party directly respond to each other. “You are not going to convince the person next to you. They are not your audience,” said Thad Kousser, UC San Diego Political Analyst. Kousser says the way this is set up is purely for show. Different representatives are trying to reach their constituents, who may not be watching live. The clips of them either deriding or defending President Trump could serve them well come election season. RELATED: Impeachment trial in Senate would look very different from a regular court case“So it is, get your press release out, get your talking points out, put them on video,” Kousser said. Kousser says nobody expects the Senate to convict President Trump and that American voters will ultimately judge the President and, by association, the impeachment. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - These days, it's hard to go a block in the East Village without seeing a restaurant that's out of business.Recently, the Tilted Kilt, Market Hall, Smashburger, and Sol Cal Cafe have all shuttered. "I just noticed constant, consistent places are closing around here," said Ed Korb, who was visiting the area Thursday.Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe De L'Opera, on J Street, says it's ever-increasing rents, and higher costs like minimum wage and electricity that are squeezing her, and causing her colleagues to close. She's been in business for five years, and says it gets harder each time the calendar turns. "Everybody thinks that because you're close to Petco Park, which is a great location, you're going to make a lot of money," she said. Ahmed says she tried keeping her cafe open during Padre games, but even then the foot traffic couldn't justify it.The East Village Association, which keeps a directory businesses, said in a statement that this part of the evolution of the neighborhood."As the East Village community continues to grow, so to does the sophistication of our businesses housing and residents, which lends to a competitive higher end urban environment, offering a uniquely downtown San Diego experience," the association said. A spokeswoman for the Tilted Kilt, which also closed its Mission Valley location earlier this year, said the owner of the space near Petco Park wanted to go in a different direction.   1502
