SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An orphaned puppy at a local animal rescue will receive a state-of-the-art heart surgery to repair a rare heart murmur.Helen Woodward Animal Center said Tuesday Cowboy, a terrier-blend brought to the center last October, has an irregular heart rhythm, so intense that veterinary staff could actually feel a distinct and loud rumble if their hands were placed on his chest. The puppy was brought into the center with his mother and five siblings, all of whom have found new homes.RELATED: Puppies found abandoned in Escondido park adopted out to new homesSince Cowboy arrived at Helen Woodward, he's been cared for by center staff and a foster owner and administered a medication called Atenolol to take pressure off his heart.“We care deeply about every single orphan pet that comes into our care and go to great lengths to make sure that each one of these wonderful animals has the chance to live a long, healthy and happy life with a loving forever family,” Jennifer Shorey, Helen Woodward Animal Center Director of Operations, said. “When we learned about Cowboy’s unique condition, we didn’t hesitate to find him the expert care he needs. We’re looking forward to seeing him thrive through surgery and eventually find a family of his own.”Cowboy is now set to receive a complex surgery in May.RELATED: Sea lion pup rescued by SeaWorld from rocks in Ocean BeachCardiology specialists at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center in San Diego will perform the procedure, which involves placing a deflated balloon into Cowboy's heart valve and inflating it to open the stricture and ease blood flow to lower his heart pressure. The center is accepting donations to help fund Cowboy's state-of-the-art surgery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a bitter primary, voters are getting a clearer picture of who will move on in the race to replace Congressman Duncan Hunter in East County's 50th Congressional District. Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa, a former Congressman, are leading the field. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Campa-Najjar had 34 percent of the vote; Issa had 25 percent, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio had 21 percent, and State Senator Brian Jones had 11 percent. There are still about 350,000 provisional and mail-in ballots to be counted. It is unclear how many of those would include district voters. RELATED: Campa-Najjar, Issa hold leads in 50th Congressional DistrictHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one felony count of campaign fraud. The seat has remained vacant since. On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar and Issa began taking at aim at one another in anticipation of facing off in the November runoff. Campa-Najjar pointed out at that Issa does not live in the 50th Congressional District, and said he was part of an older political establishment. RELATED: Check election resultsIssa represented the neighboring 49th District until 2018, when he decided not to seek re-election. It then went to Mike Levin, a Democrat. "He's been going around the county trying to find a seat for himself. He fled his own seat and now wants to run in this district. It's not up for grabs, it's not for sale. We're going to vote for someone who is from the district," Campa-Najjar said. Meanwhile, Issa said he is very connected to the 50th District, and has represented swaths of it in the past. RELATED: Gloria, Sherman take early leads in mayoral raceIssa said Campa-Najjar is running in the wrong district because his positions do not fit with its conservative ideals. "At the end of the day, I can't take him as seriously, as long as he isn't voting for a Republican speaker that's going to, in fact, move a conservative, positive agenda, which I will," Issa said. Campa-Najjar is pitching a moderate agenda that he says can bring together those who are both pro-choice and pro-life, and those who are pro-and anti-gun rights. RELATED: Early votes reject Measure B, narrowly approve Measure AWhile Campa-Najjar took in the most votes Tuesday, he did so as the only active Democrat in the race (Marisa Calderon, a Democrat, got about 5 percent of the vote but had dropped out earlier). Add up the Republican votes, and Campa-Najjar loses. That does not bode well when he faces one Republican in November."That would say, 'Hey, politics is going to go back to normal, if that's what we see in a month (when final votes are counted),'" said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at U.C. San Diego. The primary ends a bitter campaign period in which Issa and DeMaio took out blistering ads against each other over who was more loyal to President Trump. Issa said Wednesday he does not expect that level of vitriol against Campa-Najjar, and complimented his enthusiasm and vigor as a candidate. In a statement, Carl DeMaio's spokesman said the campaign is waiting to make sure all ballots are counted. 3175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 27 years, Mysterious Galaxy, a popular sci-fi bookstore in the Clairemont area, may have to close its doors. In a post on the store's website, the owners say they are looking for a buyer to take over the store on Balboa Avenue and move it, as their lease expires in 60 days. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that unless a new buyer and new location are found immediately, Mysterious Galaxy will be forced to close its doors," reads the post.Manager Kelly Orazi says it's "devastating" to see the store shut down.RELATED: Sears, Kmart stores slated for closure in months ahead, company says"We're a hub for people who love books," she says. "(People) Who love reading, who love writing. It's really something special."If it closes, Mysterious Galaxy will join a handful of other small, locally-owned bookstores to close recently in San Diego. In 2018, Villainous Lair shut its doors, as did the Adams Avenue Bookstore. And Lhooq Books in Carlsbad may do the same, as that location is facing eviction. But, on the whole, the independent bookstore industry is thriving across America.RELATED: San Diego area Forever 21 stores may close under Chapter 11According to the American Booksellers Association, the number of independent bookstores has gone up every year for the last decade, even as overall retail sales are down. Experts say it's because shoppers are looking for a more personal, intimate experience than what they can get online or at a major retail chain. That's what Diesel Bookstore is hoping to capitalize on. That store just opened at the end of October in the Del Mar Highlands mall."We offer bestsellers, but we also offer a curated selection of books in every subject manner," says Manager Iris Halperin. "People want an experience that's different, that's fun, that's unique. That's what Diesel brings."RELATED: Poway's 'Disneyland for discount hunters' to close next yearHalperin says the goal for the store can be summed up in a quote that the store's owner often references: "A book store is part school, part party, part counseling center and part creative workshop. It's street theater at its best. It is fun, moving, challenging, complex, and deeply rewarding work."Orazi agrees and is hoping there's still time for a plot twist that will keep Mysterious Galaxy open."We're looking for an owner that can come in, buy the bookstore, support the bookstore, find a new location for us or help us find a new location, and, hopefully, we'll be able to continue providing books and bringing magic to people for years to come. 2577
