The Bureau of Transportation Statistics released preliminary data on Monday, which shows U.S. airlines carried almost twice as many passengers in June than in May. According to the news release, BTS said data collected showed that 16.3 million passengers flew on large airlines in June, up from 8.4 million on all U.S. airlines in May.The BTS said airlines carried 80% fewer passengers in June than it did exactly one year ago.The data was by 20 airlines that carry 90% of the passengers, the agency said."June 2020 was the second consecutive month that the annual decrease in the number of U.S. airline passengers was less than annual change in the previous month," BTS reported.According to the agency, preliminary data showed a 77% decline in domestic passengers between June 2019 to June 2020 following more substantial annual reductions in May (88%) and April (96%).Preliminary data showed that international passengers on U.S. airlines declined 96% from June 2019 to June 2020, following annual decreases of 99% in April and 98% in May, the agency said.BTS says final U.S. airline traffic reports for June will be released on Sept. 11. The Flores family has been farming dates for three generations.For the past few years, Marco Flores, owner of San Marcos Date Farm, says he’s seen major changes in temperature and weather patterns.“It’s drier than it used to be,” he said of the land his father bought in California’s Coachella Valley more than 55 years ago. “It used to be a lot more moist before.”These are conditions his 300 fruit-producing palm trees don’t like.“Sometimes there’s no rain,” Flores said. “The impact of climate change is definitely doing something to them.”Similar concerns are being expressed across the planet.“Climate change is impacting agriculture and farmers abilities,” said Paul Minehart of the Syngenta Group, a global agricultural innovation company.Minehart’s team recently published a study showing 72% of farmers they interviewed from around the world are worried about climate changes impacting crop yields.“It’s coming down to, especially in the United States, is the unpredictable weather patterns that are beginning to emerge,” he said.Minehart says those unpredictable weather patterns include unusual droughts and flooding in America and extremely arid conditions in other countries. The Confederate-themed Mississippi flag is drawing criticism from two big forces in the culturally conservative state. Walmart says it will no longer display the state flag because it includes the Confederate battle emblem. Displaying state flags inside stores is a common practice. “We know the design of the Mississippi state flag is being discussed by various stakeholders. While the issue continues to be discussed, we’ve made the decision to remove the Mississippi state flag from display in its current form from our stores," Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield said in an email statement.“We believe it’s the right thing to do, and is consistent with Walmart’s position to not sell merchandise with the confederate flag from stores and online sites, as part of our commitment to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for all of our customers in the communities we serve," Hatfield continued. The Mississippi Baptist Convention is calling on lawmakers to remove the Confederate symbol from the flag because many people are “hurt and shamed” by it. The governing body for college athletics and other influential groups are calling for Mississippi to change its flag. Republican Gov. The contention around the 2020 presidential election is having some ripple effects, one of which is an effect on holiday shopping.Experts believe the delayed results are part of the reason there’s been a drop in holiday shopping, which retailers desperately need. So far, this year has been one of the toughest years for retail, especially brick and mortar stores.First, the pandemic forced closures and even as stores reopened, shoppers were initially hesitant to return to in-store shopping. Now, as holiday shopping starts to ramp up, the contentious presidential election has become a significant distraction for shoppers.“Consumers not knowing how to react have hit the pause button on their spending,” said Greg Portell, lead partner in the global consumer practice of Kearney.Portell believes without a clear winner in the presidential election and also acceptance of that victory, the holiday shopping season will not be what retailers needed.“The risk and uncertainty tied to civil unrest and the randomness of it at times, is really going to dampen consumers going into those locations,” said Portell. “That really takes the momentum out of what was a close recovery to what was traditional shopping patterns.”“Between the pandemic, the election,” said Mark Cohen, “it just doesn’t feel like we are going to have a jolly old Christmas.”Cohen, the Director of Retail Studies at the Columbia Business School, explained consumers need tranquility to spend and some excitement to spend the way they normally would for the holidays.“We’ve got a society of highly anxious, insecure, emotional, and battered consumers,” said Cohen, “None of that looks like it fits into any definition of tranquility.”However, some, like John Copeland with Adobe Analytics, caution against full doom and gloom around holiday shopping.“Typically, the day after an election, consumers slow their shopping a little bit,” said Copeland.Adobe Analytics data, gathered through its market-leading Adobe Analytics tool kit, shows in 2016 consumer spending dropped 14% after the election. After the 2018 midterms, it dropped 6%. The end of July is expected to be a busy time for courts where eviction cases are handled across the country.As the funding from the CARES Act is closing in on its end so is reprieve for renters, who have had difficulty making their monthly rent payments.“There’s a lot of fear,” said attorney Zach Neumann. “People are really concerned about where they’re going to go when that [eviction] demand is placed on their door.”According to the U.S. Census Bureau Pulse Survey, approximately 30 percent of renters have little to no confidence that they can make their next housing payment.CBS News reported during the month of May, 20 percent of renters failed to pay rent on time.“I think you have people who are behind on their rent right now, who haven’t been able to make full payment,” said Neumann. “I think the bigger source of [eviction] filings is going to be in early September when we are definitively out of the CARES Act money window.”To help renters and homeowners with mortgages in Colorado, Neumann started the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project in late March. He said after seeing people post on Facebook that they were worried about their payments, he put up a post saying he would help them free of charge. Overnight, he says he got more than 500 direct messages asking for his services.“I think the reason that this is going to lead to so many more evictions is because it’s longer-lasting,” said Neumann. “Also, the financial hit is uniform across groups of people.”To give renters more time, the CARES Act instituted a 60-day moratorium on evictions for people living in federally financed rentals, which covers 25 percent of all rentals in the United States, according to the Urban Institute. That moratorium is set to expire on July 26.Cities across the country also put their own eviction moratoriums into place, but many of those are set to expire at the end of July as well.Nine thousand evictions cases resumed in Memphis, once its moratorium ended last month. In Virginia, 12,000 eviction cases were filed when its moratorium was lifted.“There are people in serious crisis and our neighbors are suffering,” said Tammy Morales, who serves as a city commissioner in Seattle.In May, Morales introduced legislation banning landlords from using eviction history as grounds to deny tenancy to renters for up to six months after the pandemic. The bill passed in with all but one commissioner voting yes.“There are cascading effects of this crisis, and this is one piece that we are able to do at the local level to help people,” said Morales.“It’s harder to hold onto your job. It’s harder to keep your kids in school. It’s harder to maintain a workable level of health,” said Neumann about evictions. “What you see is after an eviction folks spend months and months unsuccessfully looking for housing.” 2826
