With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 general election is shaping up to be one like never before. This year, many more Americans are expected to vote by mail instead of stopping at a polling place, in an effort to avoid contracting or spreading the coronavirus. To accommodate the high demand for mail-in voting, many states are relaxing their restrictions on who’s eligible to do so. In most states, you can vote by mail without an excuse or COVID-19 can be your excuse. However, it cannot be used as an excuse in Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas, NBC News reports. If you’re planning on voting, you must first make sure you’re registered on time. And if you’re wanting to vote by mail, you’ll want to request a ballot. The U.S. Postal Service, which will play a huge roll in this election, strongly recommends that voters request their mail-in ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to Election Day, which is on Nov. 3.The USPS also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states' due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. If you don’t want to rely on the USPS to deliver your ballot to election officials, many communities provide locations where you can drop your ballot off yourself. Each state in the U.S. has different rules for how its residents vote in elections. To help Americans make their votes count, we’ve compiled the registration deadlines and absentee ballot deadlines for each state below, according to Vote.org:AlabamaRegistration deadline: Oct. 19Absentee ballot application deadlines:In person: Received by Oct. 29By mail: Received by Oct. 29Online: N/ACompleted absentee ballot due date: Postmarked by Nov. 2, received by noon on Nov. 3AlaskaRegistration deadline: Oct. 4Absentee ballot application deadlines:In person: Received by Oct. 24By mail: Received by Oct. 24Online: Received by Oct. 24Completed absentee ballot due date: Postmarked by Nov. 3, received by Nov. 13ArizonaRegistration deadline: Oct. 5Absentee ballot application deadlines:In person: Received by Oct. 23By mail: Received by Oct. 23Online: N/ACompleted absentee ballot due date: Received by 7 p.m. on Nov. 3ArkansasRegistration deadline: Oct. 5Absentee ballot application deadlines:In person: Received by Nov. 2By mail: Received by Oct. 27Online: N/ACompleted absentee ballot due date: Received by 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3CaliforniaRegistration deadline: Oct. 19, same-day registration available on Nov. 3Absentee ballot: All registered voters will be sent a vote-by-mail ballot. -- meaning high fire risk -- into Friday afternoon. The Saddleridge Fire started around 9 p.m. ET and jumped the 210 and 5 freeways, and some parts those roads and the 405 were closed as orange embers lit up the night sky. By late Thursday it had gutted 60 acres; but some four hours later, it had grown to more than 4,000 acres, fire officials said.Hector Landeros, who lives in northern Los Angeles' Sylmar neighborhood, said he heard fire trucks and police cruisers speeding through the streets Thursday night as the massive flames got closer."In some areas, the streets have started to empty but at the front lines people are watching, waiting on the sidewalk not really knowing what to do," he told CNN early Friday. "There are a lot of people trying to get into their neighborhoods."Shaun Butch said he saw flames on both sides of the freeway while driving on Interstate 5."Everything was engulfed in smoke and visibility was so low it was hard to drive. Everyone on the Interstate 5 north was stopped and trapped. Still was able to barely get through on the Interstate 5 north."Patsy Zamora said as she drove on the freeway with the fire next to the truck route, she could feel the heat through the windows. In Sylmar, Mojdan Darabi's husband was spraying their house and yard with a garden hose early Friday, 1316

It was June 23, 1963 when James and her grandmother dressed up and headed to Woodward Avenue in Detroit.“I was very young and I remember my grandmother being very excited and my grandmother saying, 'Beth we are going to have a special day,'” James said. She says at first she was frightened, but the fear dissipated quickly. “Everybody was so kind and they were in a really great mood, and yet, they were very strident in the way they were caring themselves. They were afraid at all or any sense of anger that type of feeling wasn’t there, it was just a lot of love a lot of hope," she added.James says being in the same space as the King inspired her career. She now works as a program manager for the University of Michigan as part of the department of Afro-American and African Studies. Every Martin Luther King Day, she remembers that march she attended when she was just a little girl. “This day to me is, that’s why it is my favorite national holiday because it’s the one that is dedicated to peace and equality for all.” This story was originally published by Ali Hoxie at WXYZ. 1087
