CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-of-the-art hospital is nearly complete in the South Bay. The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is expanding, adding a seven-story hospital to the current facility. "I think this is just everything for this community, right now we're really the only ones investing down here in the South Bay, in Chula Vista," says Matt Teichner, Sharp Chula Vista Senior Project Manager."Everyone who comes in here gets seen regardless of your ability to pay, we see people from both sides of the border here, and we are just full to the brim every day right now."It will be the first new hospital in San Diego's South Bay in more than 40 years.Planners say patient safety and infection control was the number one factor when designing the new hospital. The new hospital features advanced operating rooms as well as innovative technologies. (KGTV) - Parents in Chula Vista are horrified after finding out that dozens of children are taking part in what is being called an after-school fight club. Alain Tripp has lived across the street from Bonita Vista Middle School for more than a decade. Once the bell rings, he sees students walk along the canyon trail to go home. But lately, he has been noticing something else. “Every so often I see a group of 15-20 kids. They’ll be standing there and fighting,” Tripp said.Tripp is not the only one who has seen fighting just off campus.Other neighbors said they had witnessed dozens of kids running down the trail on minimum-day Fridays, to participate in organized fights at Discovery Park. One Bonita Vista Middle School student’s mother sent 10News a photo of what appears to be many students scattering after one of the so-called fights. Parents said the students then upload fight videos onto a secret Instagram account, seeking internet fame.“They just see a lot of people who are Youtube famous… A famous Youtuber popping up in their heads and stuff,” Tripp said. “I feel like every year, kids are trying to grow up faster.”Some neighbors told 10News that they have tried to stop the alleged fights, but they say these keep happening. Now, the school is stepping in. 10 News got a copy of the letter sent to parents from Bonita Vista Middle School Principal, Teresa Kramer. 1457

(KGTV) - Chula Vista's city council will revisit whether to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana this month.City leaders said earlier this month they would take a look at the draft of the proposal that would allow Chula Vista to permit, license, and fully regulate commercial marijuana. The council will open the matter again during their Feb. 27 meeting.If passed, Chula Vista's ordinance would allow for 12 commercial licenses, including eight storefronts. (KGTV) – A 13-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after police said he was driving a SUV that rolled over at a Chula Vista rock quarry.Police said the incident happened at around 2 a.m. Wednesday in an area off Hard Rock Road, near Heritage Road.According to police, an SUV driven by the teen crashed through a gate at a rock quarry and then rolled over. Witnesses reported seeing several juveniles get out of the wreckage and run away from the scene.The 13-year-old driver remained with the SUV and was questioned by police before being transported to the hospital. It is unknown if the teen suffered any serious injuries.ABC 10News learned police launched a drone to search for the passengers but could not locate them.Police are trying to determine who owns the SUV, how the teen ended up behind the wheel, and if the vehicle was stolen. 871

(KGTV) - A report says Chula Vista faces an immediate need for more police staffing to keep up with rapid growth, and that traffic congestion will worsen in the coming years.At a Special Meeting called for Thursday evening, the city’s Growth Management Oversight Commission (GMOC) is expected to present to the city council its review for fiscal year 2018, which includes recommendations on how to properly address issues directly caused by the city's progression.Chula Vista’s exponential growth over the past five years has led to a big increase in homes being built across Chula Vista. The city says “the number of residential building permits issued in Chula Vista averaged 1,008 units per calendar year” between 2013-2018. "This rate of growth is projected to continue or increase over the next five years, according to Chula Vista’s 2018 Residential Growth Forecast, updated in April 2019," the GMOC says. "With growth comes the demand for additional services and facilities."The GMOC warns that the Chula Vista's police department is not prepared to accommodate anticipated growth in the next 12-18 months or five years. It also addresses concerns that road congestion will get worse along Palomar Street given that improvements will take a half decade to complete.The GMOC’s annual reports, including the fiscal year 2018 report, “addresses compliance with delivery of services and facilities, based on threshold standards for the eleven service topics identified in the City’s Growth Management ordinance.”According to the GMOC’s report for 2018, four service topics are considered “not in compliance” with the city’s threshold and at risk of continuing to be non-compliant in the future: Libraries, Police [Priority 1], Police [Priority 2], and Traffic.POLICEWith the city’s continuing growth, the report shows there has not been enough police staffing to adequately respond to both emergency calls and urgent calls, as well as the volume of calls, thus leading to slower response times.The GMOC says the police department's response times for Urgent Calls for Service in fiscal year 2018 were calculated at 20:17, about 8 minutes and 17 seconds slower than the 12-minute threshold. 2222
