BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday called for more efforts to consolidate and develop an equal, unified, cooperative and harmonious relationship among all ethnic groups.     All ethnic groups were inseparable, he said at a meeting with a 49-strong delegation of minority role models and local leaders in Beijing.     Authorities in minority areas should work to rebuild shared growth and prosperity, and implement policies on minority regional development.     The delegation from southwest China is scheduled to visit Shanghai, and southern China after leaving Beijing. BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A compensation scheme for families of sickened and dead babies in the tainted milk powder scandal, which caused a food safety scare in China, is under review, a Health Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.     The ministry is collecting medical records and checking statistics to make preparations for compensation, spokesman Mao Qun'an told reporters.     Mao said he "has not been authorized to release details" about the compensation plan but assured the media that relevant departments are working on it and will release the results after the plan is adopted.     Mao also said local governments paid a large amount of money for hospital ultrasound equipment and medication after more than 22 million children needed testing after drinking formula containing an industrial chemical known as melamine. That testing started in September.     Children who were confirmed to have developed kidney stones received free treatment.     The ministry said earlier it was likely six babies died from drinking toxic milk powder. Another 294,000 infants suffered from urinary problems such as kidney stones.     The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine publicized the names of 22 dairy companies which produced milk products containing melamine after milk powder produced by Sanlu Group was found to contain the banned chemical in mid September.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait. 

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese industry faced a grim situation, as the global financial crisis would have a deep impact on the industrial and information technology sectors, a senior official warned on Wednesday.     Zhu Hongren, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the country needed to increase investment in key areas and weak points of the industrial economy. The government should maintain a reasonable investment scale and step up technical innovation.     He said the imbalance between weakening demand and expanding capacity would become more problematic as the crisis spread. Labor-intensive and export-oriented businesses would be hurt as prices of energy and raw materials would continue fluctuating.     Among others, the electricity, textile and non-ferrous metal industries had already sustained heavy losses, with 18.3 percent of large industrial companies losing money during the first eight months of the year.     Industrial output growth fell to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest since April 2002. Power generation and oil production grew a mere 3.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, while steel output fell 9.1 percent year-on-year.     In the first three quarters, the value of industrial exports rose 15.7 percent, which was 6.1 percentage points less than a year earlier.

TAIPEI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland's chief negotiator on Taiwan affairs Chen Yunlin said Thursday that complicated historical problems across the Taiwan Strait could well be resolved through mutual trust.     Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), told a banquet, held in the island's landmark Grand Hotel, that problems could be settled as long as the two sides made concerted efforts with "kindness and wisdom" to create conditions and firstly solve economic and livelihood problems closely linked with public interests.     Chen was grateful for the considerate arrangement and warm and friendly service on the part of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) over the past four days.     He was on a five-day visit to the island starting Monday for economic talks with the SEF, which was the first meeting held in the island between the ARATS and the SEF. The two signed historical deals concerning direct shipping, flights and postal services. It requires us to negotiate and solve them through sincerity and patience," he said.     SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung said at the banquet that in more than half a year after the two organizations resumed consultations, great achievements had been made. He expected an extensive cooperation and exchanges across the Strait to benefit people on both sides.
