SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's called "cuffing season" and San Diego is the place to be for participating singles.According to Match, cuffing season is defined as "when daters find someone to settle down within the colder months … and may or may not be a relationship that lasts until the spring."Essentially handcuffing yourself to someone for the winter, before parting ways in the spring.RELATED: The San Diego single scene doesn't offer much, study saysUsing data from its Singles in America study, which Match calls the nation's largest study of singles' dating habits, the site based its rankings on more than 5,000 singles of all ages in the U.S. That study says nationwide, 70 percent of Gen Z and 63 percent of Millennials are searching for love, with about 14 percent of singles saying pressure from family or friends is the key reason they seek out a long-term relationship. The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually.With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Last month, investigators arrested a 72-year-old man suspected of being the Golden State Killer. It could be the dramatic end of a four decades old search for the suspect.Which got us thinking, whatever happened to the cold case of the “Geezer Bandit” who may not even be a senior citizen anyway? And, could advanced technology ever help find him?He was the most elusive senior citizen during a two-year crime spree. The bank robber the FBI nicknamed the “Geezer Bandit” because of his geriatric appearance.The “Geezer”, who may have been a much younger person using a professional grade prosthetic mask, robbed 16 banks from San Diego to San Luis Obispo from 2009 to 2011. 11 of those robberies happened in San Diego County. “Profiling as you understand now is a pretty big spectrum,” says Jack Hamlin.Hamlin is a Professor at National University and professional criminal profiler. We asked him how this person, seven years later, has become the modern-day D.B. Cooper and why he, or she, would simply vanish.“We have an expression in law enforcement, we only catch the dumb ones,” says Hamlin.The “Geezer” was one of the best. Performing almost mistake free and seemingly very sophisticated. The mask may not have been his only disguise, and he was said to wear gloves, there was no known getaway vehicle, the robberies were during off-peak hours and with little security. And five of his robberies were on a Friday, payday. So, we asked the question, ‘Is it possible this person had some law enforcement training?’“It’s certainly somebody that understands how things work,” added Hamlin.  “These robberies weren’t random. He’s figured out a time when security is low; he’s figured out a time when there’s going to be plenty of cash, Friday.”The “Geezer developed a cult following with thousands of followers on Facebook. T-shirts are still available celebrating ‘Geezer Bandit for President.’ But his last robbery was December of 2011. That's the only time a dye pack was used, exploding and making the money useless, and possibly his disguise too. We haven’t heard from the “Geezer” since.“I don’t see this person suddenly having an epiphany and saying, ‘It’s over with. I don’t need to do it anymore,’” says a skeptical Hamlin.Hamlin says people like this need the rush and rarely just quit. But the one mistake the “Geezer” made on that final robbery was dropping a day-planner which he carried as part of his disguise. If it holds his DNA, Hamlin says there may be an option to use a genealogy website like investigators did to catch the person they believe is the Golden State Killer.“Now you’ve got this public DNA base, and if there is some way they can tap into that, um, the skies the limit on some of these cases,” says Hamlin.UPDATE: The FBI tells 10News there has been no change in this case since the last attempted robbery in 2011. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the race for a coronavirus vaccine, scientists often say we need more than one winner.That’s in part because different vaccines use different strategies to provoke the immune system, and each strategy has different strengths.Take the inactivated virus vaccine, an approach currently used in the vaccine against the poliovirus. In this approach, scientists take a live virus, kill it with chemicals or heat, and then introduce that viral corpse into a person.There are three groups in the final phase of human trials using inactivated coronavirus, primarily in China, according to a tracker from the Milken Institute.“The immune system can tell the difference between something that's a real threat and something that's not a threat, and so if you get injected with a dead virus your immune system has the tendency to not pay a lot of attention to that,” said Dr. Shane Crotty of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.The downside of the inactivated virus approach is that it only elicits two out of the three of the parts of the immune system, Dr. Crotty said. It’s capable of producing antibodies and helper T-cells, but not killer T-cells.The modern take on the inactivated virus approach is called a viral vector vaccine.In this strategy, scientists combine elements of the coronavirus with a common cold virus called an adenovirus that won’t make you sick. Since the virus is alive, it can elicit all three kinds of immune responses, Dr. Crotty said.“There are no licensed vaccines right now that use that strategy, but there are all kinds of vaccine trials that have been done around the world with those types [of vaccines] showing that they're straightforward to manufacture. They're very safe,” he said.The University of Oxford is testing a viral vector vaccine for COVID-19 in a Phase 3 clinical trial.Then there are subunit vaccines. These include just a section -- or subunit -- of the virus’ protein.UC San Diego is working on a coronavirus candidate vaccine using this approach.There are subunit vaccines currently on the market for tetanus and other viruses.“Working with proteins is more challenging, just from a laboratory and manufacturing perspective,” Dr. Crotty said.Enter the next phase of vaccine development. Instead of using the virus itself or fragments of it, Inovio Pharmaceuticals is working on a vaccine strategy using just the virus’ genetic information.DNA-based vaccines simply introduce a genetically engineered blueprint of the virus into a person, and the cells do the rest.“Some people get confused about this. They think it’s a genetic vaccine that changes their DNA and becomes part of them, and that’s definitely not the case.” Dr. Crotty said. “They don’t become part of you. Your body chews them up.”Researchers have been working on DNA-based vaccines for about 20 years, Crotty said, but none are currently licensed for use.San Diego-based Arcturus Therapeutics is using an RNA-based approach, along with other companies like Pfizer and Moderna that have entered Phase 3 trials.Messenger RNA reads the DNA instructions and helps translate them into proteins.Dr. Crotty said the DNA and RNA approaches have similar drawbacks and benefits: they’ve never been approved for us, but both can be developed rapidly because they don’t require access to the physical virus.Around the world, there are more than 200 coronavirus vaccines currently in development, according to the Milken Institute. 3459

However, San Diego military families are concerned that a loophole will allow the private companies that oversee the housing developments to continue ignoring what they call "slum" conditions.10News has been digging for months into the problems reported by residents at local communities run by Lincoln Military Housing, one of the biggest companies in the industry. Residents say they have been plagued by mold, which has caused illness, as well as rodent and insect infestations, and shoddy maintenance and repairs.RELATED: .7 million awarded to Housing Commission to house military veterans"Lincoln Military Housing doesn't do a very good job of maintaining the infrastructure of these homes," says resident Erika Bradley.Bradley says the recent storms have led to more problems with leaks and mold. She says around 50 families living in the Santo Terrace community in Tierrasanta were forced to leave their homes and move into hotels.The new deal agreed to by Congress include the framework of significant reforms, including a tenant bill of rights, a strict set of regulations for how complaints should be handled, and an arbitration process that leaves the final decision in the hand of base commanders, rather than the companies. That means it's possible that it could be nearly 30 years before some of them would be forced to consider making changes."It's kind of something that looks really good on paper," Bradley says, "but how does it actually help us in our day to day lives?"10News asked if Lincoln plans to agree to the new procedures.
