If you've ever had a surgical procedure, you know it can often mean a high hospital bill. Now, more people are turning to surgery centers for a lower cost.Sandi Bowen is one of those people.Something as simple as picking out a shirt is more challenging for Bowen than she ever thought it'd be. On Easter, she found a lump in her breast. Doctors told her it was cancer."It was very very very confusing," Bowen says. "It still is. It brings tears to my eyes, because I don't understand how I got it."Instead of a lumpectomy, she decided to remove her entire breast. And instead of going to a hospital for breast reconstruction, Bowen opted for the Kaiser Permanente Ambulatory Surgery Center, where she got the surgery. In less than 24 hours, she was back home recovering.  "I felt very special," Bowen says. "They were there every time I moved. They came in and talked to me, even goofed around with me."Dr. Mike Sawyer, the director at the center, says they've worked hard to address concerns regarding patient care."If it's a patient that just needs physicians to kind of come to the bedside, and maybe we have to have some kind of intervention, we're able to do that because are here and we are present," Dr. Sawyer says. "On site, as they say. If it's really something that requires a higher level of care, that again allows us to do a pretty quick transfer process over to one of our partner hospitals."Compared with hospitals, Kaiser Permanente says its patients are seeing an average cost savings of 30 percent on their procedures. It can be anything from simple orthopedic procedure to joint procedures.However, Dr. Sawyer says there are important questions you need to ask before determining if a surgery center is the best option for you."Does your physician feel comfortable with this operation there?" Dr. Sawyer says. "Have you and your physician discussed all the ramifications of that procedure? HOUSTON — An Associated Press review of medical records for four detained immigrant women and interviews with lawyers have revealed growing allegations that a gynecologist performed surgeries and other procedures that the women never sought or didn't fully understand.Dr. Mahendra Amin was linked this week to allegations of unwanted hysterectomies performed on immigrant women at Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia.Some procedures could be justified based on problems noted in the medical records, but lawyers and medical experts say the women's lack of consent or knowledge raises severe legal and ethical issues.Amin provided gynecological treatment or performed surgery on eight women dating back to 2017, including one hysterectomy, according to an attorney an immigration and civil rights lawyer working with attorneys to investigate medical treatment at the detention center.The AP's report comes days after a nurse's complaint at the detention center was widely published. Dawn Wooten claimed that many immigrant women were taken to an unidentified doctor she called the "uterus collector" because of how many hysterectomies he performed.In an interview with The Intercept, Amin said he performed "one or two hysterectomies in the past three years." HIs lawyer told the AP that Amin was looking forward to the "facts coming out," and claimed that he would be cleared of wrongdoing.The AP did not find evidence of the "mass hysterectomies" that Wooten alleged. Wooten's complaint prompted outrage from Democrats and an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General.LaSalle Corrections, the private prison company that operates the jail, "strongly" refuted the "allegations and any implications of misconduct." In a bizarre twist following the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17 people, the confessed shooter Nikolas Cruz has been receiving "fan letters" from across the nation. The Sun Sentinel reported that Cruz not only has been receiving letters from admirers, he has also received money for his commissary account, which allows inmates to purchase snacks and accessories. So far, Cruz has been given 0. The letters, many of which are coming from teenage girls, are not being shown to Cruz as he is on suicide watch at the jail.Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein told the Sun Sentinel the craze is "perverted." Some of the letters have included suggestive photos of young women. According to the Sun Sentinel, one woman from Chicago sent nine photos of herself that were sexually suggestive. "In my 40 years as public defender, I've never seen this many letters to a defendant," he said. “We read a few religious ones to him that extended wishes for his soul and to come to God,” Finkelstein added, “but we have not and will not read him the fan letters or share the photos of scantily-clad teenage girls.”The Sun Sentinel reported that one person from Texas sent a letter that included hand-drawn hearts and happy faces. "Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on your face make you so handsome," the woman said in a letter to Cruz. “I’m really skinny and have 34C sized breasts.”A teenager wrote, “I’m 18-years-old. I’m a senior in high school. When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you," the Sun Sentinel reported.Cruz, who admitted to killing 17 people last month at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, awaits trial.
