SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles has announced he will retire from football at the end of the 2019 season, the Eagles announced Saturday.Sproles spent 15 years in the NFL, racking up 3,552 career rushing yards, 4,840 receiving yards, and 55 total touchdowns. He was a three-time Pro Bowl running back and spend six seasons in San Diego with the Chargers before heading to the New Orleans Saints and lastly Philadelphia.The 36-year-old Sproles told reporters he's at peace with his decision to retire. During his six seasons with the team he would rush for 1,331 yards and find another 1,459 yards receiving.His five seasons with the Chargers saw just as much production, with 1,154 rushing yards and 1,400 receiving yards and a healthy 4.6 yards per carry average.Looking back at his time with the Chargers, Sproles thanked the team for giving him a chance to play in 2005."Looking back on my career, I think about the time I stood on the stage inside the RCA Dome getting measured for coaches and scouts at the 2005 NFL Scouting Combine. When my height and weight were announced, I could hear laughing from the audience," Sproles wrote. "I've always been short, it's not the first time I've been made fun of for it, but I started worrying that I might not get picked because of my size. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Police arrested a man suspected of assaulting multiple people as he tried to steal their vehicles in the Bay Terraces area.Police reported at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at a red light on Woodman Street and Paradise Hills Road.Police said the unidentified man tried to carjack five people at the red light before being arrested.One of the victims suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One CHP officer is dead, two were injured in a shootout in Riverside Monday and one CHP officer was injured in El Cajon by a hit-and-run drunk driver Tuesday night. CHP is now examining their protocols, seeing if there are lessons to be learned from Riverside.10News spoke with a veteran CHP officer to find out what protocol is in place to protect officers.Veteran CHP officer Phil Konstantin dedicated a decade to the force and has many stories to tell. "Crashed into by vehicles, I've had to jump out of the way of vehicles, and I've been shot at," he said.Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night a CHP officer was trying to remove debris from the 94 freeway when officers say a man drove into the center divide multiple times. The officer tried to wave the man down and was hit. The man drove away and was stopped a short time later.He was driving 13 mph in the shoulder with his hood obscuring the windshield. Our 10News Breaking News Tracker recorded the driver stumbling during his field sobriety test. The man was arrested for DUI.His girlfriend drove to the scene and was also arrested for DUI.Konstantin says a traffic stop is one of the most dangerous parts of their job.He said when they pull a car over, officers turn their wheels away from the shoulder so if their car is hit, it rolls into traffic instead of into the car the officer pulled over or the officer. He also said he kept a vigilant eye on the people in the car and on traffic."All of the sudden if I lose sight of you and you're jumping into the car very quickly, are you going for a gun like with what happened in Riverside?" He said being vigilant will save your life.In 1987 Konstantin's training was put to the test. "As soon as the car stopped moving someone got out of the passenger side and shot at us.'' He and his partner were working the graveyard shift and pulled over what they thought was a drunk driver. It turned out being a pair who had kidnapped a restaurant owner they robbed and they were trying to go to the man's home to ransack it."The guy aims at the car in general and then at someone who would've been standing by the driver's side door. Has I been standing at the driver's side door, I would've been hit by buckshot," he said staying in the car and ducking saved his life.He said any driver can help an officer by keeping their hands on the wheel, listening to an officer's directions, and telling an officer if they need to reach somewhere to get their license, so they don't think you will harm them. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, concerns were raised and the release of police body camera video was requested after San Diego police officers reportedly shot a man on Sunday after they arrested him. Police say he managed to get out of his handcuffs and accessed a police gun after he was left in a patrol vehicle.On Monday, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown told 10News that officers were called to the Westgate Hotel on Sunday night for a report of a man who threatened security workers. After officers reportedly took in the 25-year-old Hispanic man, they say he slipped out of his cuffs while in the patrol unit.“It does happen but you know there's a tricky line to walk between having the handcuffs too tight where they can't come off but that also means that they can cause damage to a person that's under arrest and that's not our goal,” said Lt. Brown.She added that the suspect then reportedly broke a divider in the vehicle and grabbed a backup gun from an officer's gear bag that was in another area of the vehicle, all while he was alone in the vehicle and officers were away to process paperwork. “They were in the area of the vehicle. It's not like they were hundreds of yards away. They do maintain visual contact and there are other officers that are in the area,” she told ABC10 News.Once officers noticed, police say he fired a least one round after refusing their commands to drop the gun. They report that they fired back and struck him in the torso, but they say he still got out of the car with the gun and ignored their commands. Officers say a police canine then took him down.Community activist Tasha Williamson said Monday that the suspect should never have been left alone. “It’s not safe for the individual who has been arrested and not safe for the officers who are leaving them in the car with weapons,” she added.She's been demanding the release of body camera video within 24 hours of the shooting, like police did last week after rounds were fired with a robbery suspect.A police spokesperson said Monday that the release of the video will take longer in this case but the department is working hard to get it out and hopes to have it released within a couple of days.“[That’s] not sufficient and what that's telling the public is that when there’s no public outcry, they'll take their time at releasing the video,” added Williamson.The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.SDPD is investigating the officer-involved shooting. SDPD says once its investigation is completed, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. Police say the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers before the Community Review Board on Police Practices reviews the incident. Police say the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.The three officers who were involved are on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard protocol. 3161
