SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests. At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business. The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery. After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle. As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody. However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself. The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills. The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Three of the boys were found dead in the home. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario. Police had been called to the home earlier in the month to break up a fight between Valdivia and Rosario, but said no crime was committed. San Diego Crisis Hotline: 888-724-7240 3354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three gyms, a restaurant, and a Pacific Beach juice shop prompted the most complaints from the public about health order violations, according to 211 data analyzed by ABC 10News.Of the five businesses with the most complaints, the county has only taken enforcement actions against two, in the form of cease and desist or shutdown orders. The 211 data reviewed by ABC 10News includes more than 9,400 complaints received from April 3 through July 29.Number 5: Boulevard Fitness (2110 El Cajon Boulevard)This gym got 141 complaints, primarily for intentionally operating indoors after Governor Gavin Newsom banned indoor gyms July 13. This week, San Diego Police cited the owner after the gym defied a cease and desist letter from the county. The owner of Boulevard Fitness could not be reached for comment.Number 4: The Gym (2949 Garnet Avenue)The Gym got 158 complaints stretching back to April, with tipsters warning of people bunched close together without masks. One tipster said in June, “It’s an outbreak waiting to happen. I cannot stress enough that I’m not exaggerating at all.”The tipster was right. The county ordered the facility to close July 23, but one week later, the county announced it had traced an outbreak back to the facility. An outbreak is defined as three or more infections at one location. The County confirmed this week The Gym was given permission to reopen with equipment outside.A staff member at The Gym hung up when ABC 10News asked for comment over the phone earlier this week. A man who appeared to be the owner tried to stop a photojournalist from recording the outside of the building from the sidewalk.Number 3: Self Made Training Facility (4030 Sports Arena Boulevard)As of Thursday, Self Made Training Facility continued to operate indoors, according to video captured by ABC 10News.This gym got 184 complaints, mostly in mid-July after the owner, Matt Pallardy, posted a video directed at “King Newsom” on Instagram.“This is to let San Diego and everyone know that we will not be closing our doors,” he sai, adding that he encouraged other gyms to do the same.Pallardy declined an interview, but said in a statement that most of the complaints are from people who have not actually been to the facility. He said the gym takes steps to sanitize equipment and noted that they are not as crowded as a typical gym because they only offer personal training. The county has not sent Self Made Training Facility a cease and desist or shutdown letter, spokeswoman Tegan Glasheen said Wednesday.Number 2: Firehouse American Eatery (722 Grand Avenue)Firehouse American Eatery got 190 complaints, almost entirely after a video surfaced on Reddit June 29 showing a DJ performing on the venue’s outdoor patio. Tipsters noted the tables looked closer than six feet and guests were not wearing masks.Owner Matthew Spencer thinks a lot of tipsters didn’t know that masks are not required when diners are seated. The video shows a woman standing and dancing without a mask; Spencer said she was quickly asked to sit down.“I think it was a misunderstanding by the public at the time. It was put on Reddit by someone who wasn’t there, and there you are,” he said in an interview.Spencer said the county only clarified later that DJs were not allowed. He stressed that the restaurant has been going out of their way to follow all the rules.“Regardless of your political views, it seems to me you need to follow the rules. It seems to me that following the rules brings the [infection] numbers down. And so to be on this list is really heartbreaking for us,” he said.Firehouse had no 211 complaints before that incident and three since.Number 1: Mad Beet (933 Garnet Avenue)This juice and smoothie shop collected 191 complaints about employees not wearing masks, mostly after a customer posted a video on Facebook July 10 showing two maskless employees.“I was just dumbfounded this was happening,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified.“I was like, ‘Why are you guys not wearing masks?’ And she’s like, ‘Well it’s our civic right not to and our employer agrees with our choices.’”Owner Brian Dunlap declined an on-camera interview but suggested over the phone and by email that it was an isolated issue. “It was just a long weekend in July for us,” he wrote. However, ABC 10News found two complaints employees failing to wear masks in late April, 13 in May and 11 in June. Several tipsters mentioned that the owner wasn’t wearing a mask either.Dunlap said the shop has been in compliance since the July 10 incident. The county has not taken action against them. 4609

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking. To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January. He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property. What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers. He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. Also, when inputting your student's name, make sure it's the exact name listed on their social security card and not a nickname.“With a little bit of education they’re going to know more than some guidance counselors in the county," said Caruthers. If a family's financial circumstance changes, they can appeal the FAFSA decision.Such a circumstance might be losing a job, divorce, or medical bills."We've seen cases where clients have gotten ,000, ,000, ,000, ,000 more free money a year, simply by approaching the financial aid office and explaining the situation."He says the number one mistake is not applying at all.Caruthers offers free workshops around the county for families.Click here for important FAFSA forms, Cal Grant information, and Pell Grant information. The U.S. Department of Education also answers frequently asked questions on its website. 2490
