JINAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The Premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Yong Il, has vowed closer cooperation with east China's Shandong Province.     Kim arrived in Beijing Tuesday before traveling to Jinan, capital of Shandong, on his first China trip as premier. The visit, made at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, is scheduled to end March 21.     In a meeting with Shandong officials, Kim said the traditional bilateral friendship nurtured by leaders of the elder generations had witnessed sound development over the years.     Calling his China tour an important part of the China-DPRK Friendship Year, an annual bilateral exchange program, Kim said the DPRK is willing to further strengthen cooperation with Shandong in various areas including politics, economics and culture.     Shandong's Communist Party chief, Jiang Yikang, told Kim the province hopes to use the opportunity of the China-DPRK Friendship Year to carry out substantial cooperation with the DPRK.     Kim will conclude his visit to Shandong on Wednesday and return to Beijing for activities marking the 60th anniversary of the China-DPRK diplomatic ties.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities closed 1.47 percent up Wednesday to stand at 2,408.02 points, surpassing the 2,400 points mark, echoing the overnight Wall Street rebound.     The Shanghai Composite Index gained 34.81 points, or 1.47 percent to 2,408.02. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 174.06 points, or 1.94 percent to 9,156.01.     Gains outnumbered losses by 675 to 183 in Shanghai and 599 to 140 in Shenzhen.     Combined turnover expanded to 250.67 billion yuan (36.68 billion U.S. dollars) from 200.03 billion yuan on the previous trading day.     Coal shares boosted the index up, as there were reports Monday that the government might consider raising the coal price by 4 percent.     China Shenhua Energy, the country's leading coal producer, gained 5.8 percent to 21.9 yuan, while China Coal jumped 5.65 percent to 9.17 yuan.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index continued the upward trend of the previous trading day and touched a 2422.63 points intra-day high Wednesday, exceeding the previous intra-day high of 2402 points on Feb. 17.     Zhang Yunpeng, an analyst with Beijing-based Huarong Securities, said investors should not be overly optimistic about the continuing rebound, as the turnover in recent days was lower than that in mid-February, which suggested that some investors were still cautious.     China's top banking regulator Liu Mingkang said Tuesday the government would require foreign banks taking stakes in domestic commercial banks to hold those stakes for at least five years, rather than three as at present, to reduce risks for local banks.     Zhang said this was a piece of positive news for Chinese bank stocks for the long run, as this move would help stabilize their share prices.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China's top lender, rose 0.76 percent to 3.97, while the China Construction Bank, the country's second largest commercial lender, gained 0.47 percent to 4.32 yuan.     Chongqing Iron and Steel Co. rose 1.24 percent to 4.91 yuan, after the steel producer reported a 33.18 percent growth in net profit to 598.3 million yuan last year in its annual report released Wednesday.

ISTANBUL, Turkey, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The World Water Council (WWC) is ready for China's membership, WWC President Loic Fauchon said here Saturday evening.     During his meeting with Chinese Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei on the sideline of the 5th World Water Forum, Fauchon said he welcomes China to "the WWC family," and "we are ready to sign the agreement" which just need a few days to finalize the details of the pact.     "We need your experience and your tradition, It will be a nice relation," he added.     Chen said China is willing to participate WWC activities and China will shoulder the obligation and responsibility when it becomes a member.     Chen invited the president to visit Beijing. Fauchon said he is glad to visit the Chinese capital in May or June, when the both sides are expected to ink the pact.     WWC, created by a number of key water institutions in 1996, unites over 300 member organizations from more than 60 countries. ISLAMABAD, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A 100-member-strong youth delegation of Pakistan is to leave for China on Sunday on a week-long visit as a program of boosting exchanges between the two friendly countries.     "The youths from all walks of life of Pakistan will have the chance to look at China and know more about China," said Charge d'Affairs Yao Jing of Chinese Embassy in Pakistan told youth delegation at a reception.     Chinese President Hu Jintao invited 500 young people from Pakistan to visit China within five years when he paid a state visit to Pakistan in November, 2006. The program was launched in 2007.     The program is aimed at "increasing mutual understanding" between the two countries and peoples, said Yao.     Ullah Saif Shervani, secretary of Pakistani Ministry of Youth Affairs, expressed the hope that the delegation members could take the opportunity to learn from "friendly China" and help enhance "time-tested friendship" between the two countries.     "I appreciate the Chinese government for the chance to visit," said Adil Taj, an university student in Islamabad. "We will work hard to make our own contribution to Pakistan-China friendship."     The youth delegation is scheduled to visit Beijing, Urumqi and Lanzhou from April 19 to 27.
