SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Chicano artists and activists gathered to voice their concerns about two more murals getting torn down during construction on a local school, one week after the first mural was destroyed.The San Diego Unified School District is working on upgrading Memorial Preparatory school in Logan Heights. Part of the upgrade involves tearing down buildings and walls, and on some of those walls are decades-old murals painted by local Chicano artists. The murals all celebrate the history and culture of the local area.Wednesday, Sept. 30, the artists gathered with a group outside the school and asked to save the murals. Moments later, the first mural was destroyed. A spokesperson for the district said that building could not be saved because it had asbestos.The advocates expressed concern over that statement, saying if the asbestos was really that bad, the construction workers should not have let it collapse the way it did, allowing dust to spread into neighboring homes.RELATED: Barrio Logan artists upset about destruction of historic muralOne week later and the artists gathered again in front of the school, this time saying there are two more murals inside the school they want to save. They said to their knowledge, the buildings these murals are painted on are staying up and these areas do not have asbestos, but certain parts are being torn down, including where the murals are. They’re asking the district to save these murals, offering to supply the funding and labor needed to move the artwork.“What we’re saying is we have the resources we have the will and we have the passion to go forward with the removal. So it’s not that it can’t be done, it’s that we’re not being allowed our rights to preserve them for the entire community,” a representative from the group said.KGTV spoke to a representative from the district Sept. 30, who said they did not want to take the murals down but had to for safety reasons due to the asbestos. They also mentioned the construction will benefit the students in the long run. The district could not be reached again the following week, so KGTV was unable to ask why the other two murals cannot be saved. 2176

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) — Thirty-four people were arrested after Border Patrol agents intercepted two smuggling boats in less than 24 hours.The first boat was spotted around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday by a Department of Homeland Security aircraft. Less than an hour later, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations agents were able to stop the vessel about one-mile southeast of Point Loma.Twenty-one people were arrested, including four who are alleged smugglers — two of which are U.S. citizens. The remaining 17 people on board were Mexican nationals. Once the boat made it to shore, 14 people began running from Border Patrol agents. Thirteen people were captured, but one got away. Eleven of the arrested were Mexican nationals and two were Chinese Nationals. San Diego (KGTV)- The entertainment world is left in shock after the death of Chadwick Boseman. The Hollywood star lost his battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying. SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has voted to support the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California’s sanctuary laws.The board voted 3-1 Tuesday afternoon to support the lawsuit. The board directed that the County’s attorney to file an amicus brief supporting the federal lawsuit.The deadline to file a brief passed, so Chairwoman Kristin Gaspar said the earliest the county can file a brief is if the ruling is appealed to a higher court.RELATED: Escondido City Council votes to support sanctuary policy lawsuitSupervisor Greg Cox was the only one opposed to supporting the lawsuit.
